This is just European self-rightousness and simply isn't how the words are used on the other side of the Atlantic. It has nothing to do with stupidity or poor education, but with culture, tradition and the way language usage has developed.

The continent is almost never referred to as America, but rather "the Americas" or North America, Central America, etc. if you refer to a specific part. America (singular, unqualified) almost always refers to the USA; Canadians generally use it the same way. Wikipedia also mentions this usage in the "Etymology" section of the article on the USA.
