When I got my phone they advised me to limit charges to max 80% to extend the battery. Within 5 months it started to deplete too quickly, so I started charging it to 100%, and weirdly after that it's been holding charges much longer. Now we have this new usb cord that I don't understand but it supercharges a phone in 40 mins, from 0 to 100% - yay? The last time I replaced a phone battery it was a bad result. Is there anyone out there that can advise on best practices long-term? Thanks.

avoid using wireless charging or fast charging. the main issue is heat build-up degrades the battery, and the faster you charge the hotter the battery becomes. both wireless charging and fast charging heat up the phone a lot.

so, if you have many hours where the phone is idle, like overnight, a normal 5v charger should be fine for that use case. reserve fast charging for when you really need a boost

a youtuber recently released a video on this after testing multiple phone to both 80% and 100% and slow and fast charging for a long period. TL;DW very little difference:

I think that most of the difference is using fast charge or not.

Anyway, in my to-do list I also have "studying how batteries work and decide yourself the best strategy".

It's there since the seventies...

My phone is 4y old and has probably 24h of battery if I don't use it much, just leave it in a bag or similar. I am following the battery care recs the phone is giving me. Those are: Regularly letting it run out fully so it shuts down. Not leaving it on 100% and still in the charger for hours, ie unplugging it when it reaches 100%. The phone itself has software that suggests a target timer to reach full charge, usually 30min before my morning alarm, which lets me charge overnight.

to be honest it runs out a few times a day, but that's because I'm constantly on my phone. Some apps, and also screen brightness, eat charge. But it doesn't seem to affect longevity, I still have a useful time from full charge if I need to travel somewhere or so, I just bring an actual book instead of reading on an app.

it does say to fill it up completely, just not leave it in the charger on full.
