Just found out that Prince was not the thing in Europe that he was in the USA. Playing song after song to mere blank stares. I am undone, like a foundation has fallen out from under me. We are not the same!

One person just asked. "So, in the 80s was he bigger than Kiss?"

I'm now blasting Darling Nikki to get this conversation off me.

@Tarnport... How so? What gig was this and where?
Europe is not one place, it's many countries. He was big in the UK.

@noodlemaz this is Italy in the sample, but I'm realizing I didn't hear him on rotation in France either, maybe not at all. I'm interested to hear that he penetrated Britain more. He's just so foundational to my idea of modern rock music of the last half century, sine qua non, and one of the brightest stars of a 90-year legacy since Cab Callaway, down through Little Richard and Funk. I'd say he's one of the most important artists in living memory! Excerpting him would change everything. Ah me.

If it's any consolation to you, he was big enough to have a pupeeter in a German children's TV program make his puppet character a fan that sang 'Pop Life', 'Purple Rain' and 'Kiss' to himself for a whole episode.

And these days there's a German music station devoting an entire radio to him. Prince only rotation non-stop: 80s80s.de/streams/80s80s-princ…

Curious. I was in London when he died. A lot of Prince was being played all over Shoreditch.

one person offered that Italy was simply too prudish for such overt sexuality at the time. So maybe it's just local to conservative Catholicism?

Could be. Or maybe too macho for an elfin biracial pansexual?
in reply to colorblind cowboy

@colorblindcowboy the good news is that this morning I have so many great many new songs to fester in the minds of the Italian innocent.

@Tarnport

In my high school in the 80ies he had much more fans than Kiss. I know it because I was a Kiss fan and hardly new about Prince. All what my schoolmates knew about Kiss was "I was made for loving you" but they had tons of Prince LPs.

Maybe these mountain folk would like it if you took up the bag-pipes?
in reply to Tarnport

nope in Italy he was really famous, kiss a bit of a niche. They were too satanic for the Vatican 😆
