New notification style issues

The notification page layout has changed and there are some issues for me.

Possible factors on my end:
- Browser: Zen Browser 1.13.2b, mod of Firefox 139.0.4.
- Piefed settings: increased font size, but the Settings page doesn't show me the current size setting so I can't say what it is.

The previous "All" notification screen was clear, compact, had the same height for each notification and only took one click to open anything.

Now the notification heights are variable, some truly huge (as it includes the whole comment being replied to, even the markdown for the URLs of images), replies to comments require an additional click to access, and the "Reply details" line overlaps the notification title. (At least for me, not sure if it's like that for everyone.) EDIT: Also, the nice, immediate indicator of a red dot for an unread notification is now hidden for replies to comments, until clicking "Reply details". ANOTHER EDIT: I just spent a minute hunting down one remaining unread notification, clicking on multiple "Reply details" until I found the right one.

While some of the changes look useful (e.g. distinction between replies to comments and new posts in 'Notify me' communities), they get lost among the confusion created by these issues.

Is there a way to make things a bit tidier and easier to scan, with fewer clicks needed to get to things? (I looked in Settings but didn't notice anything that might make a difference.)

The height of notifications does vary a bit depending on the type of notification. Some of the admin notifications in particular are a bit taller than the others, but I did try to tame them. The nice thing about how the notifications were re-architected by Jolly is that each one is a separate template file. So, if we want to tweak a specific type of notification, it is easier to do now compared to before.

Raw markdown in the notification is good feedback. This isn't something I had tested when working on how these display, I can take a look at this.

Plenty of good European EVs as well. From a Porsche Taycan to a Dacia Spring, a wide selection. Including wagons/combis and vans.

The Japanese also have good ones, especially Nissan. Leaf and Ariya are decent. Honda kinda gave up and Toyota is indeed terrible, even the Lexus line is behind.

in reply to Tja

I'm still mad at Toyota because they've kept pushing hybrid cards instead of making great EVs.

  • Efforts to unionize have been followed by legal roadblocks and layoffs, despite initial government approval.
  • Moderators in Kenya, India, Poland, and elsewhere are also trying to organize for better protections in an industry increasingly reliant on outsourced labor.

I just want them to make a true flagship phone. I personally wouldn't mind paying extra for a more ethical phone, if it had all the bells and whistles and wasn't half obsolete straight out of the box.

Regulatory Standards Bill: 30 hours allocated for public submissions on Act Party leader's bill

ACT Party Leader David Seymour is defending the Regulatory Standards Bill getting only 30 hours of public submissions allocated.

Speaking to media, Seymour said the bill was "probably the most consulted on bill this century" given it would be the bill's fourth time through the house.

But, Labour's Regulation spokesperson Duncan Webb said it was the "most rejected bill we've ever seen" and Seymour wanted to "slip it through under the radar".

Toop said it was a "travesty" that there would only be 30 hours for people to be heard in by Select Committee and the bill would insert "far-right ideology" into the law making process.

"I don't believe there's ever been a bill in this Parliament where every single written submission has been heard. A lot of people make written submissions and they ask not to be heard. That's normal." Seymour said.

Labour's Duncan Webb said the bill had so far been "rejected every time" and Seymour did not want the bill to go through a full process.

Ahoy, maties! We're setting sail for a new instance, i.e. **PieFed.Social**. Come follow the adventure, if'n ye darest! (more details in post)

  • What pointed me towards this solution was primarily Blaze's positive experience with such.
  • What delayed my personal decision was 1) new, scary health issues I've been dealing with, and 2) personal ambivalence. What swung the balance was the fact that (maybe, hopefully) I'm not going blind anytime soon, plus I was really starting to miss sharing my BD findings with the world. (more on why I feel so driven on that in a future post, perhaps)
  • Specifically, I understand that our new address should update from **lemm.ee/c/eurographicnovels** to **piefed.social/c/eurographicnov… altho it's going to be up to the PF instance-runners to make the final decision on that.
  • But why PieFed, anyway? Welp, because it will seemingly allow a bunch of our classic content to be preserved. I feel like that's very much a good thing rather than 'completely starting over.'
  • But what if the move doesn't work out for reasons X, Y or Z? Then we'll move to the next-best instance that I know of in the few days we have left here, and I'll be sure to mark that heavily across our sub/community, so that people will have an idea where to follow us who are looking at cached versions of EGN+.
  • Btw, huge thanks to Thomas Verguet & Bastien Orenge for this artwork from Magellan, which I hope to get to, one of these days. (boy, I sure seem to say that a lot, lately XD)
  • Oh, and sadly, I'm not quite sure how to do a group-invite to our ~1,260 subscribers to the new place. If anyone reading has some expertise on that, now would be a nice time to chime in... 😅
  • Btw2, "PieFed" as I understand it is not just a classic instance, but also a significant 'dev' instance (like Lemmy.ML) that's a major fork of the Lemmy software which federates beautifully upon the Fediverse. Eh, note-- I'm not trying to point fingers or be an ass here, but PF really does seem like it's one of our sister/brother software variations that works in all the right ways with our own Lemmy / FV software and community... if that makes sense?

CONFIRMATION POST:
piefed.social/post/973016

I just migrated a community from Lemmy to Piefed using the migration feature, it worked quite well

Context:
I tried to use the Piefed migration feature to migrate !barcelona@lemm.ee to !barcelona@piefed.social

piefed.social/c/barcelona now exists, with all the existing posts there, as well as the icon and description.

It even moved some subscribers (there are around 100 now), from what I understand those were Piefed subscribers that got automatically moved.

The one caveat is that from Lemmy instances, the community doesn't have show old posts (see lemm.ee/c/barcelona@piefed.soc…), but if you were restarting a community from scratch you wouldn't have access to your old posts anyway.

This ensure that at least the posts are transferred to a community on an active instance, which is probably the main concern for lemm.ee communities at the moment.

Notification: EGN+ has just asked to migrate from Lemm.ee to this instance. [SOLVED]

When using the 'migrate tool,' I don't seem to be seeing a 'closing message' as I'd hoped, but maybe the form isn't set up to give me one? Eh, whatever. So then, here's an extra confirmation attempt to make it clear that I'm asking PF to migrate my classic Lemm.ee community over to PF, as follows:

**lemm.ee/c/eurographicnovels**
wants to turn in to:
**piefed.social/c/eurographicnov…

With the specific request post being here:

Conservatives are already losing their minds over Mamdani's apparent win

It didn’t take long for conservatives to lose their minds after Zohran Mamdani’s apparent upset over Andrew Cuomo in the Tuesday night Democratic primary in the New York City mayoral race.

Why? He’s a 33-year-old democratic socialist who has promised free buses and free child care, and to freeze the rent. But the fact that seems to most trigger some on the right is that he is Muslim, and would be the first Muslim ever elected the city’s mayor if he wins in November.

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), Laura Loomer, and Charlie Kirk were among the right-wingers who fired off Islamophobic smears about Mamdani and Muslim New Yorkers to their millions of followers after Cuomo’s surprising concession. The posts come days after reports that Mamdani has faced threats and attacks prompting an investigation by the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force.

What a bunch of loser bigots.

Harper: Offline, Privacy-First Grammar Checker. Fast, Open-Source, Rust-Powered

Harper is an English grammar checker designed to be just right. I created it after years of dealing with the shortcomings of the competition.

Grammarly was too expensive and too overbearing. Its suggestions lacked context, and were often just plain wrong. Not to mention: it's a privacy nightmare. Everything you write with Grammarly is sent to their servers. Their privacy policy claims they don't sell the data, but that doesn't mean they don't use it to train large language models and god knows what else. Not only that, but the round-trip-time of the network request makes revising your work all the more tedious.

LanguageTool is great, if you have gigabytes of RAM to spare and are willing to download the ~16GB n-gram dataset. Besides the memory requirements, I found LanguageTool too slow: it would take several seconds to lint even a moderate-size document.

That's why I created Harper: it is the grammar checker that fits my needs. Not only does it take milliseconds to lint a document, take less than 1/50th of LanguageTool's memory footprint, but it is also completely private.

Another big problem of languagetool is that they "forgot" to add any kind of authentication in the self hosted version, so even if you have gigabytes of unused memory it can't be published online

Declaring Metapendence – Threads

Last week, I wrote about alternatives to Meta’s WhatsApp. While WhatsApp offers end-to-end encryption, the many privacy issues with both Meta in general and WhatsApp in particular provide many reasons to stay away or move away from WhatsApp. I, myself, have never used WhatsApp, but I want to be as thorough as possible in providing solutions for the Meta problem.

This week, we take a look at Threads, the micro blogging service which Meta released in 2023 to take advantage of the mass exodus from Twitter after Elon Musk’s purchase in 2022. As with other Meta services, Threads comes with its fair share of issues. Before Threads was out of beta, TechCrunch reported that Threads was a “privacy nightmare”:

Information provided about the app’s privacy via mandatory disclosures required on iOS shows the app may collect highly sensitive information about users in order to profile their digital activity — including health and financial data, precise location, browsing history, contacts, search history and other sensitive information.

Lomas, N. (2023, July 5). Meta’s Threads app is a privacy nightmare that won’t launch in EU yet. TechCrunch. techcrunch.com/2023/07/05/thre…

‌While Threads initially grew quickly, reaching 100 million users within days of its launch, Meta stopped reporting their user count, so any reported current user counts are estimates at best.

Threads other issue is that, as part of Meta, there is no longer any fact-checking to attempt to counter misinformation and extremism on the platform. This decision came shortly before Donald Trump began his second term as US President and was a clear capitulation to Trump and Republicans, who have used misinformation and extremism as tools in their continuing war to establish fascism.

Export Your Threads Data

Before leaving Threads, the first thing we’ll do is export our account data for backup and archival purposes. Fortunately, Meta provides instructions on how to do this.

  1. Go to instagram.com.
  2. Click Menu in the bottom left, then click Settings.
  3. Click Account at the top.
  4. Click Download your information.
    • Enter the email address where you’d like to receive a link to your data, then click Request Download.
    • Enter your Instagram account password and click Next in the top right, then click Done.
    • You’ll receive an email titled Your Threads Data with a link to your data. Click Download data and follow the instructions to finish downloading your information.

View and download your Threads information | Instagram Help Center. (2017). Facebook.com. facebook.com/help/instagram/25…

What’s confusing is that the option to download your Threads data is actually under your Instagram account. Be sure to select your Instagram account, choose the “Some of your information” option, and then check the box for Threads in the list of information choices under your Instagram accounts. You will also have the ability to select the data format (HTML or JSON) and how far back you want to download (I selected “all time”). Once your data is ready to download, you will receive an email notification with a link to start the download.

Since I’ve only been on Threads for a few months, my download was ready within minutes and was just a few megabytes in size. If you’ve been on longer or posted a lot of media, your data will take longer to process and download. You should also note that you only have 4 days to download your data before it expires, though you can re-submit your request at any time.

Delete Your Threads Account

Originally, you couldn’t delete your Threads account without also deleting your Instragram account. That, of course, was very unpopular, and Meta eventually made it possible to just kill your Threads account. Just follow these simple steps:

To permanently pull the plug on your account, make sure you’re signed into the Threads app. Tap the profile icon in the lower right on the bottom toolbar, tap the double-lined icon in the upper right, and then select Account. At the Account screen, tap Deactivate or Delete profile. Tap the button at the bottom for Delete profile.

Enter your password in the password field and then confirm your action by tapping Delete Threads profile. A message pops up telling you that your account is scheduled for deletion, an action that will occur in another 30 days. Until that time, you will no longer be visible on Threads. If you change your mind, just sign back into your account. Otherwise, wait for the 30 days to pass for your account to be permanently removed.

Threads Alternatives

When Elon Musk bought Twitter and started morphing it into his own personal Truth Social, I had looked at alternative micro blogging sites I could move two. There were two main alternatives then and they are still the front-runners now.

Bluesky

Bluesky first appeared as an invite only service in October 2022, right around the time Musk took over Twitter. The service has iOS and Android apps for mobile and has released its code as open source, allowing anybody to create an account on the service for free. The service grew in a big way thanks to the influx of Brazilian accounts created with the impending shutdown of Twitter in the country in late 2024. There are even projects in the works to make the Bluesky service federated and visible to other services, including…

Mastodon/Pleroma

I am listing these two services together as they are both similar. Both Mastodon and Pleroma are free open source micro blogging platforms, similar to Bluesky. The difference is that these services are decentralized and federated. What this means is that, unlike most major social media platforms like Threads and Facebook, which are their own “walled gardens” and won’t play nice with others, there are many Mastodon and Plerorma servers on the web which CAN talk to one another. This is similar to how email works, but for micro blogging. For example, my Mastodon account is hosted on a server called twit.social, but I can see and respond to posts from other Mastodon servers such as mastodon.social, writing.exchange, social.coop, and others. I can also see and respond to other services on the “Fediverse“, including Pixelfed (photo sharing), Diaspora (Facebook alternative), Bookwyrm (book and reading social sharing), and others.

Do you have a Bluesky, and/or Mastodon/Pleroma account? Post your account info in the comments. My accounts are located at:

Rare Franken-GPU has both AMD and Nvidia branding — AMD Radeon GeForce RTX 9070 XT is the new ultimate midrange gaming champ

Although the replacement GPU's packaging is labeled for the Asus TUF Gaming Radeon RX 9070 XT OC Edition, the actual card inside features a shroud marked with both AMD Radeon and GeForce RTX branding. This unusual hardware issue appears to be a manufacturing mistake by Asus, directly stemming from the company's production line.

Valdobbiadene (TV): PROSECCO CYCLING, domenica 28 settembre 2025

US strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites only set back program by months, Pentagon report says

Findings by Defense Intelligence Agency suggest Trump’s declaration that sites were ‘obliterated’ may be overstated

An initial classified US assessment of Donald Trump’s strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities over the weekend says they did not destroy two of the sites and likely only set back the nuclear program by a few months, according to two people familiar with the report.

The report produced by the Defense Intelligence Agency – the intelligence arm of the Pentagon – concluded key components of the nuclear program, including centrifuges, were capable of being restarted within months.

The report also found that much of Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium that could be put to use for a possible nuclear weapon was moved before the strikes and may have been moved to other secret nuclear sites maintained by Iran.
