Major Palestinian Bedouin village faces expulsion by Israeli army and settlers

cross-posted from: hexbear.net/post/5395820

Ras Ain al-Ouja is one of the largest Palestinian Bedouin villages in the occupied West Bank. Nestled amid a ridge of high silt hills just north of Jericho city, the village is facing intensified Israeli government-funded settler efforts to expel its residents.

The community’s 1,200 residents are surrounded from all sides by the illegal Yitav settlement and four illegal settler outposts, the most recent of which was built one year ago.

Settlers descend onto the village and raid residents’ homes on a daily basis, physically attacking people, stealing sheep, and terrorizing families. They also took over the nearby spring of Ain al-Ouja, one of the main springs in Palestine and a major water source for the entire area that drew local tourism. Today, all Palestinians are barred from accessing it.

Data Crucial to Hurricane Forecasts Will Continue, but for One Month Only

U.S. officials said they would stop providing the satellite data online on July 31 rather at the end of June.

Data from this instrument also reveals sea ice extent, and that can't be allowed.

One of Hong Kong's last major pro-democracy parties disbands

On the wall of the League of Social Democrats office, the Chinese characters for freedom are spelt out with court admission slips.

Members of the party take turns speaking into a microphone connected to a loudspeaker. They stand in front of a banner that reads "rather be ashes than dust", written in Chinese. Founded close to 20 years ago, the party is known as the last protest group in Hong Kong.

"The red lines are now everywhere," Chan Po Ying, the chair of the party, tells the BBC. "Our decision to disband was because we were facing a lot of pressure."

in reply to FundMECFS

Highly unlikely, there's us military stationed on Taiwan and it's not connected to the mainland by train like HK
in reply to KuroiKaze

There’s no US military stationed in Taiwan. The closest US bases are in Okinawa and the Philippines.

The only “military” the US has in Taiwan are some training consultants for the taiwan army, there’s no boots on the ground.

'Bloodiest 21st century war': New study finds Gaza's real death toll nears 100,000

Snip:

The pre-print of a new study led by Prof. Michael Spagat of Royal Holloway, University of London, and Palestinian political scientist Dr. Khalil Shikaki has revealed that Gaza's death toll from the ongoing conflict could be nearly 100,000, a figure significantly higher than official reports, Haaretz reported on 26 June.

The Gaza Mortality Survey (GMS), the most comprehensive to date, estimates around 75,200 violent deaths between October 2023 and January 2025—nearly 40 percent higher than the Gaza Health Ministry's reported death toll of 45,660 at the time.

Researchers carried out a detailed household survey, interviewing 2,000 families—around 9,700 individuals—to independently evaluate fatalities.

The study estimated 8,540 additional non-violent deaths through January, bringing the combined fatality count for that period to 83,740. Gaza's Health Ministry has recorded over 10,000 more deaths since then, raising the current total to nearly 100,000 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces.

'Where's our money?' CDC grant funding is moving so slowly layoffs are happening

Health departments around the country have noticed there's something strange happening with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: It's not showing up on schedule and there's been no communication about why.

The federal public health agency doles out most of the money it receives from Congress to state and local health departments, which then contract with local organizations. That's how public health work gets funded in the U.S.

According to two CDC staff members with knowledge of the agency's budget, the CDC has yet to receive its full funding for the 2025 fiscal year. NPR agreed not to name the staff members because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

[...]

"If they can delay until the end of September, then that's it," the staffer adds. "Those projects are not going to happen. That money goes straight back to Treasury."

That's why both CDC staffers who spoke with NPR say this amounts to impounding the agency's funding.

Gradient Labs CEO: don't pay for AI support failures

Dimitri Masin, CEO of Gradient Labs, argues that companies using AI agents for customer support should only pay when the bot does its job.

"If you look at Salesforce, they price the automation per conversation," he told The Register in a phone interview. "So essentially, if you have a conversation with AI, no matter what it leads to, you pay $2."

According to Salesforce's own researchers, leading LLM-based agents tested on the CRMArena-Pro benchmark successfully complete single-turn (prompt and reply) tasks about 58 percent of the time and only about 35 percent of the time for multi-turn (back-and-forth conversation) requests.

That's both bad for customers and bad for the progress of AI agents overall. Paying regardless of results, said Masin, "doesn't create any incentive for Salesforce to actually make their agent better."

Salesforce did not respond to a request for comment. But the stats it touts in its marketing copy are, unsurprisingly, a lot better.

Court allows parents to opt their children out of school lessons involving LGBTQ+ themes

The Supreme Court on Friday ruled that a group of Maryland parents have a right to opt their elementary-school-aged children out of instruction that includes LGBTQ+ themes. By a vote of 6-3, the justices agreed with the parents – who are Muslim, Catholic, and Ukrainian Orthodox – that the Montgomery County school board’s refusal to provide them with that option violates their constitutional right to freely exercise their religion.

Writing for the majority, Justice Samuel Alito acknowledged that “courts are not school boards or legislatures, and are ill-equipped to determine the ‘necessity’ of discrete aspects of a State’s program of compulsory education.” But he emphasized that “what the parents seek here is not the right to micromanage the public school curriculum, but rather to have their children opt out of a particular educational requirement that burdens their well-established right ‘to direct ‘the religious upbringing’ of their children’” under the free exercise clause of the First Amendment.

SCOTUS upholds part of ACA that makes preventive care fully covered

The US Supreme Court on Friday upheld a key provision of the Affordable Care Act that requires health plans to fully cover many preventive health care services recommended by a federal panel.

The ruling means that tens of millions of Americans can continue getting a variety of preventive services for free under their plans. Those cost-free services include an array of screenings, such as cancer screenings like mammograms and colonoscopies, as well as screens for obesity, lead exposure in children, high blood pressure, diabetes, and some sexually transmitted diseases, to name a few. The free services also include recommended vaccines for children and adults, well-baby and well-child doctor visits, birth control, statins, PrEP HIV prevention drugs, and fluoride supplements and varnishes for children's teeth.

Kristi Noem Secretly Took a Cut of Political Donations

In 2023, while Kristi Noem was governor of South Dakota, she supplemented her income by secretly accepting a cut of the money she raised for a nonprofit that promotes her political career, tax records show.

In what experts described as a highly unusual arrangement, the nonprofit routed funds to a personal company of Noem’s that had recently been established in Delaware. The payment totaled $80,000 that year, a significant boost to her roughly $130,000 government salary. Since the nonprofit is a so-called dark money group — one that’s not required to disclose the names of its donors — the original source of the money remains unknown.

Indian court's 'red card' blocks digital pirates from streaming FIFA World Cup

Rogue websites capitalizing on the borderless nature of the Internet have met their match, as an Indian court has wielded a "dynamic+" injunction to defend the global streaming rights of British sports platform DAZN for the FIFA World Cup 2025 currently underway in the US. The court emphasized the urgency of the order, stating that without the injunction, DAZN would suffer "irreparable loss and injury" due to the rapid spread of illicit streams.

Rogue websites capitalizing on the borderless nature of the Internet have met their match, as an Indian court has wielded a "dynamic+" injunction to defend the global streaming rights of British sports platform DAZN for the FIFA World Cup 2025 currently underway in the US.

The court order, issued by the Delhi High Court on May 28, represents a significant multi-jurisdictional triumph over online piracy. It restrains identified rogue websites and any future infringing sites from "communicating, hosting, streaming and/or making available for viewing and downloading" DAZN's FIFA World Cup content without authorization on their websites or any other platforms.

The dynamic+ injunction also compels domain name registrars to "lock/suspend (on real time basis)" the infringing domain names and disclose complete details of the registrants and payment information.

In addition, the court has directed local Internet Service Providers to "block access (on real time basis)" to these various websites. The Department of Telecommunications and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology were impleaded to ensure comprehensive enforcement.

Delhi High Court Judge Saurabh Banerjee said in his 10-page ruling that the case "appears to be a classic case of copyright infringement by masked players... who use the veil of today’s technology to conveniently conceal their true identities and unabashedly abuse and enrich themselves by using the protected works of parties like the plaintiff herein through URL redirection/ masking, etc. Such entities are sprouting and have to be stopped at the earliest given opportunity."

"The Delhi High Court has always played the role of a swift, vigilant but fair referee in the ever-evolving game against digital piracy," IP lawyer Aman Sinha told MLex.

Just like the Video Assistant Referee who catches an offside before a goal can be counted, the court judgment "ensures that piracy is flagged and removed before it can score" illicit gains, Sinha said.

"In the digital match against piracy, dynamic+ injunctions are the new offside trap, anticipating the move before the infringers strike," he added.

A second IP lawyer agreed and pointed out the global reach of Indian courts. "The judgment — demonstrating a robust approach to intellectual property enforcement across international digital borders — proves that the Internet's borderless nature doesn't equate to lawlessness," he said.

DAZN, incorporated in England and Wales, alongside its Indian operations arm, DAZN Software, holds exclusive global media rights for the FIFA World Cup 2025, which is being hosted in the US from June 14 to July 13. These rights — encompassing television, digital and ancillary rights — grant DAZN the sole authority to broadcast, re-broadcast, retransmit and stream the event worldwide.

DAZN filed a lawsuit against "BUFFSPORTS" and a number of unnamed defendants, detailing how rogue websites were illegally broadcasting its streams for the World Cup. The suit followed DAZN's investigations of these sites circumventing its exclusive streaming mechanisms, effectively "financially enrich[ing] themselves" by providing pirated content. DAZN sought a permanent injunction, damages and a clear directive for immediate action.

Emphasizing the urgency in his ruling, Judge Banerjee said that if a dynamic+ injunction is not granted, DAZN "will likely suffer irreparable loss and injury." He also highlighted that "any delay in blocking these 'rogue websites' would, in fact, result in irreparable loss and injury to the plaintiffs and cause violation of the intellectual property rights of the plaintiffs."

The "dynamic+" nature of the injunction allows DAZN to inform relevant Domain Name Registrars and ISPs of any new mirror, redirect or alphanumeric variations of the infringing websites that emerge, thereby ensuring that these are promptly blocked on a real-time basis. This proactive measure is a crucial tool against the ever-evolving tactics of online pirates.

The case is set for its next hearing on Oct. 8, 2025, as the legal battle to secure digital content in a borderless world continues.

The alternative to pirating FIFA isn't paying for it but to stop giving them any attention.

Can Zohran Mamdani’s Agenda Survive Albany?: Mamdani’s plans for universal child care, fare-free transit, and affordable housing rely on Albany getting on board.

To enact his ambitious agenda to make the city more affordable, [Mamdani] would need to strike a better relationship with his former colleagues in Albany than Walker did.

Two of the three key planks in his platform — making buses free to ride and providing universal free child care — would require action from the governor and state legislature, including raising taxes by billions of dollars. (The third, freezing the rent on rent-stabilized apartments, can be accomplished at the city level.)

His five years in the legislature may serve him well in navigating Albany politics. He’s built alliances with legislators, especially fellow progressives, and seen the state capitol’s byzantine budget process up close.

“The budget process is almost a living, breathing thing,” said Senate Deputy Majority Leader Michael Gianaris, a frequent ally of Mamdani’s. “There’s a long line of mayors who thought they knew how to handle state government who have failed at doing so … I think he knows how to do it better than other mayors who have come before.”

The biggest thing Mamdani needs from Albany is money. His plan rests on the state’s willingness to raise $9 billion in taxes on corporations and high-earners.

Gianaris noted that in recent years, both houses of the legislature have supported raising taxes on the wealthy. “So there’s two out of the three players already on board with the broad strokes of that proposal,” he said.

Governor Kathy Hochul, on the other hand, has firmly opposed tax increases, recently saying, “I don’t want to lose any more people to Palm Beach.”

Not all legislators are on board, either.

“I’m not a fan of any of his tax proposals,” Weprin said. “I think they’re unrealistic and would have a very tough time getting approval in Albany.”

Mamdani will also need Albany’s backing to enact his promise to make buses fast and free. The Metropolitan Transit Authority is controlled by the state, not the city; its yearlong experiment with fare-free buses, approved in the 2023 state budget, was one of Mamdani’s signature legislative victories. But his colleagues declined to renew the program in 2024, and MTA chair Janno Lieber has been critical of the effort since it ended.

“We tried [Mamdani’s] idea of free buses on different lines,” he told radio host Brian Lehrer in April. “Most of the additional ridership [that] was identified cannibalized other lines. You’re taking people who are paying on other lines, and they were just getting a free ride.”

Lieber has also said that the free buses sent the “wrong message” at a time when the MTA has prioritized cracking down on fare evasion. He has said he prefers to reduce fares for low-income people through a more targeted approach.

Talent agency UTA drop Bob Vylan following Glastonbury chant controversy

The punk band Bob Vylan has now officially been dropped by the talent agency UTA following the comments being made during their Glastonbury set.

During the performance, the band led a pro-Palestine chant with their crowd, proclaiming “death to the IDF”. Following comments from the festival staff as well as various politicians, UTA has announced their decision to part ways with the group.

Insiders have said that UTA senior executives agreed with the festival, saying that the band had taken their political beliefs too far when making their comments. Despite not coming out with any official statement, all images and information relating to the musical duo have been wiped from the company’s website.

The BBC continued in a statement, “The antisemitic sentiments expressed by Bob Vylan were utterly unacceptable and have no place on our airwaves. We welcome Glastonbury’s condemnation of the performance.”

cross-posted from: sh.itjust.works/post/41274094

NOTE: The City Council’s criminal-justice committee is slated to discuss surveillance cameras at 10 a.m. today (Monday).

The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) is spying on you and lying about it. On May 29th, 2025, the Washington Post revealed NOPD’s secret collaboration with Project NOLA to use banned Chinese facial recognition cameras all over New Orleans to spy on you. There are more than 5,000 cameras across NOLA. All of them are run by Project NOLA executive director Bryan Lagarde, a former NOPD cop.

I had no idea they were meeting about this today in one hour! I even checked the meeting agenda last night, and didn't see anything related to surveillance.

I was prepared for the meeting on July 10th, and once again, I only found out about this bc I went out of my way looking for any mention of this.

Zero information from City officials or any mainstream local news. Only one mention from a small independent publisher that has been tracking this bullshit since the Palantir scandal of 2018.

I am getting so sick of this evasive bullshit!

Anyone that happens to see this, please watch the live stream at 10 am if you can:

cityofno.granicus.com/MediaPla…

If it doesn't work on mobile, it should work on desktop. If they do that pre-meeting, meeting adjourned BS again, close out the window and re-open the Livestream.

To deny tax deductions and other Federal funding for the costs of gender transition procedures.

The bill itself is unsurprising and uninteresting. What is interesting is the title and description written by the bill's sponsors (Claudia Tenney R-NY, Dan Crenshaw R-TX).

"To deny tax deductions and other Federal funding..."

These congressmen think tax deductions are Federal funding. If they did not think this way, they would have left out the word other in their description.

How to Wreck the Nation’s Health, by the Numbers

Best option for putting a stop to this is to give your Senators a call — the budget bill their voting on today would entrench the damage described in this article.

Zohran Mamdani declines to condemn ‘globalize the intifada’

But the New York mayoral candidate said: “That’s not the language that I use.”

"New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani on Sunday again declined to condemn the phrase “globalize the intifada” but emphasized he would be a mayor “that protects Jewish New Yorkers” if elected in November."

"“I’ve heard from many Jewish New Yorkers who have shared their concerns with me, especially in light of the horrific attacks that we saw in Washington, D.C. and in Boulder, Colorado, about this moment of antisemitism in our country and in our city,” Mamdani told Welker. “And I’ve heard those fears, and I’ve had those conversations.”"

🇮🇹🇪🇺 Italy Kills EU’s Anti-Greenwashing Law—What Now?

🇬🇧** ENGLISH**

Italy just vetoed the EU Green Claims Directive, a law to ban misleading eco-labels like "carbon neutral" without proof. The move—backed by business lobbies—leaves consumers vulnerable to greenwashing.

Key impacts:

No more rules forcing companies to prove green claims

Vague terms ("eco-friendly," "sustainable") stay unregulated

✔** EU Green Deal credibility** takes a hit

Cosa succede ora?

Niente controlli su pubblicità ambientali

Termini ingannevoli ("a impatto zero") restano legali

TL;DR (EN): Italy lets companies keep lying about being "green"—thanks to killing EU rules.

"Sovereign cloud" or "sovereign washing"? A Trojan Horse at Europe's digital gates.

Europe’s ambition for digital sovereignty is more urgent than ever. But instead of backing truly European, privacy-first services, many European businesses and even EU and local authorities still rely on US tech, and might consider the brand-new and shiny "sovereign cloud" offerings as a useful solution.

But what if the "sovereign cloud" is less secure than US companies want us to believe? Let's take a deep dive into the "Microsoft Sovereign Cloud", the "Sovereign Cloud from Google", and the advertised "European Digital Sovereignty from Amazon Web Services" and whether it's safe to use these as a European authority or business.

GOP Sen. Thom Tillis won't seek re-election in North Carolina after drawing Trump's ire

The surprise announcement comes one day after Tillis opposed a massive bill for Trump's agenda in the Senate.

Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., announced Sunday that he would not run for re-election, one day after he drew Donald Trump’s ire for opposing the party’s sweeping domestic policy package.

The surprise decision opens up seat in battleground North Carolina that was already set to be one of the most hotly contested races of the 2026 midterms.

Republicans are now forced to scramble to find a replacement for Tillis in a race that is a top target for Democrats in next year's midterms.

Why FIAB SegrateCiclabile opened an account on Mastodon (English translation)

Premise

FIAB Segrateciclabile is a local association, promoting cycling as a mean of transport, part of a national FIAB association. What follows is the translation of an Italian post where we share with members of the association why we opened an account on Mastodon (we already have Facebook an IG). I though it would be interesting to share in thos space, since I think this kind of associations should all be on the fediverse, as their values usually align much better than those of X, Facebook etc.

Why FIAB SegrateCiclabile opened an account on Mastodon

a logo where a cycle path sign bycivlrle has its frane replaced with fediverse logo

FIAB SegrateCiclabile recently opened an account on Mastodon @FIABSegrateCiclabile@mastodon.uno where we share events and news from our FIAB Ciclobby section.

What is Mastodon ?

Mastodon is a social network similar to Twitter, but with different principles. Users only see posts from those who follow, in chronological order, without ads. Unlike Twitter or Facebook, Mastodon is part of a larger network (called Fediverse) composed of many connected servers (called instances). Anyone can open one and be part of it, creating a decentralized environment. This means that no one can control everything, as it does with the big platforms.

What does Mastodon have in common with sustainable mobility?

Mastodon and the Fediverse share values with cycling and sustainable mobility, as they arise from grassroots with the aim of solving the structural problems of mainstream solutions.

Freedom and Inclusion

Unlike traditional social media, Mastodon does not require personal data to access content. It promotes an inclusive environment, where hate speech is not tolerated. FIAB is committed to a mobility accessible to all, not only to those who own a car, a driver’s license and the ability and the economic possibility of using it.

Community and Participation

Those who ride a bicycle have a deeper connection with their surroundings. The car isolates, while the bike favors genuine interactions. In the Fediverse, users can connect authentically, with no algorithms that manipulate their choices.

Democracy of the Spaces

The Fediverse represents a reaction to the commercialization of the Internet, giving control back to users. Likewise, FIAB fights to give public space back to people, not cars.

Conclusion

In an era dominated by large corporations, it is essential to enhance digital spaces like Mastodon. These instruments promote freedom of expression, inclusion and democracy, reflecting FIAB. We invite everyone to explore Mastodon and join a community that values genuine connections.

Freedom and democracy must exist in both physical and digital spaces.

Fallout Pride Mods Megathread - June 2025

Hey, c/FalloutMods, rosahaj here. June is coming to a close, and with it, the month-long observance of Pride month with it. And so, what better topic is there to dedicate this month's megathread to than the modding community's very own Pride mods?

Fallout 4

  • Elianora has long shown commitment to padding out the Fallout modding scene with pride mods, so why not paint the town red (yellow, green, etc) with Craftable Pride Flags?
  • Scars tell stories, few pleasant. There is however, the notable exception of molding one's body fit for form, which you'll be able to display with Radbeetle's Top Surgery Scars Overlay?
  • Admit it, the wasteland gets awfully lonely on those long, cold nights. Lone wanderers certainly not exempted, though they won't have to fret for long with Blahaj Emotional Support, where you'll get to fashion your very own companion to carry forth into the great unknown. Thanks to Herby247 you'll be granted the privilege of your very own blå-, or perhaps even... rosahaj?

Fallout: New Vegas

  • Expiry dates be damned, if you're gonna live in the shithole that is post-war America, you're gonna do it as your authentic self! [HRT New Vegas - Immersive Gender Change by ProfMajkowski introduces a brand new, configurable, transitioning mechanic!
  • Like Mick always says, 'a polite society is an armed society', and you'll be able to show any ne'er-do-wells exactly where you stand on community defense with kylemarshiku's Pride Arsenal. After all, nobody ever said progress was easy.

Fallout 3

  • Fallout 3 hasn't seen the privilege of making the cut for these monthly posts before, but something would be amiss if I skipped Pope74220's Pride Flag you can beat people with. After all, you'll be spreading the love one way or another

As always, feel more than welcome to contribute your very own suggestions in the discussion of this post! And with that, dear readers, I bid you farewell.

Stubsack: Stubsack: weekly thread for sneers not worth an entire post, week ending 6th July 2025

Need to let loose a primal scream without collecting footnotes first? Have a sneer percolating in your system but not enough time/energy to make a whole post about it? Go forth and be mid: Welcome to the Stubsack, your first port of call for learning fresh Awful you’ll near-instantly regret.

Any awful.systems sub may be subsneered in this subthread, techtakes or no.

If your sneer seems higher quality than you thought, feel free to cut’n’paste it into its own post — there’s no quota for posting and the bar really isn’t that high.

The post Xitter web has spawned soo many “esoteric” right wing freaks, but there’s no appropriate sneer-space for them. I’m talking redscare-ish, reality challenged “culture critics” who write about everything but understand nothing. I’m talking about reply-guys who make the same 6 tweets about the same 3 subjects. They’re inescapable at this point, yet I don’t see them mocked (as much as they should be)

Like, there was one dude a while back who insisted that women couldn’t be surgeons because they didn’t believe in the moon or in stars? I think each and every one of these guys is uniquely fucked up and if I can’t escape them, I would love to sneer at them.

(Credit and/or blame to David Gerard for starting this. Also, happy 4th July in advance...I guess.)
