I've came across too many .ml posts about praising North Korea, China and Russia. Had to block the whole instance.
Even !memes@lemmy.ml was full of this shit, but the mods didn't do anything to prevent it (but instead removed comments like "NK is a dictatorship")
but China is doing so well! they're certainty winning! look at all their free public transit, solar panel farms, large buildings, and many jobs!
they have so many jobs they're literally giving them away for free! they even give these people places to live with food and everything. China even brings their whole family with them so they can all be happy and prosperous together.

I know that the war has high support in Israel, but even 80% is still not all Israelis, let alone all jewish people. I think a lot of Israeli people have dual citizenship. Personally, I wouldn't want to live in a country that is committing a genocide - I would leave. At least some people who choose to live in Israel are ok with illegal settlements, bombing children, etc. They self-selected and that is why they are there - some even left the countries where they were born to become settlers. Jewish people are not all the same.

1st. Only some Christian denominations are fanatically pro Trump.
2nd. They are faithful, of many ethnicities. Jews are an ethnoreligious group, and in fact, while most faiths welcome converts, Judaism makes you jump through loops. People ask me what it’s like to be a moderator. Our discussions reveal that a lot of what we do is a mystery. So, I’m gonna lay it out for you. Specifically about the unique fediverse moderation model, mutual aid, and mental health.
What Fediverse Moderation Looks Like
Centralized networks like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter create rules that please executives and shareholders. Those decision makers don’t have to be ethical—and they rarely are.They obey money. Big money. And big money is never on the side of the people. Big money gets rid of fact checkers, amplifies malicious bigotry, and platforms nazis.
The fediverse is decentralized. That means there isn’t one server for all accounts and it’s not run by one company. It’s a network of servers (or instances), each self-owned/operated. Sometimes that’s one person, but most often is a small team. And each team makes its own rules for moderation. They all communicate symbiotically to create the single social network.
There’s a common theme to the rules. While not universal, the majority of instances focus on ethics and inclusivity. Those who don’t get blocked through a process called “defederation.” This is a global block between instances. It means no one on the blocked server can interact with anyone from the server who moderated it.
This makes the entire fediverse community stronger. At a local level, on our server, we have a process that seems to serve us well.
What Mas.to Moderation Looks Like
There are three moderators on our team and about 185,000 accounts. About 12,000 of those are active monthly. But they’re able to interact with an estimated 12 million total fediverse accounts. So…we have our hands full. But it’s manageable. Our queue is never very long.The baseline process works like this:
- Someone reports a post or an account
- The report shows up in our queue
- One of us reviews the report and either resolves (dismisses) or moderates
- If we moderate, the account receives an email notification with an appeal option
- If they appeal, we see that in our queue with their plea
- One of us reviews the appeal and either accepts or rejects
We also have a house rule that no one can act on an appeal for their own moderation. It’s a good way to keep each other in check. Especially because sometimes we don’t agree. This is okay. We just talk it out together and try to make the best call.
There’s an array of moderation options we use:
- Delete one or more posts
- Limit the account (only their followers will see their account)
- Suspend the account
- Send a warning
- Freeze the account (lock them out)
- Force posts to be flagged as sensitive (blurred)
There are five key things to know about the process…
It’s Hard
No decision is easy, and many decisions aren’t binary. There’s lots of gray area, even with explicit rules. We often receive reports that don’t violate those rules. It’s simply someone saying they don’t like what another person said. We aren’t argument referees, but people expect us to be. If that argument becomes harassment or discrimination, it’s time for intervention. But even that isn’t always straightforward.We Get Some Things Wrong
We’ll sometimes debate for days on a single report. We always do our best to make the right call. Even so, we sometimes make mistakes. We’re willing to accept appeals when that happens.We Get Most Things Right
We get a lot of things right. You can’t even imagine some of the traumatic things we see. Things we can’t ever unsee.We’re Targets of Both Love and Hate
We get lots of love, but we get spit on a lot. Some people lose their minds when they’re moderated. They’ll publicly shame us or call for uprisings against us. Quite literally. I’ve even been known to vent about it because it gets exhausting.Moderation Doesn’t End in the Queue
Some moderation is urgent or the severity requires additional action. We report all CSAM content to legal agencies in relevant countries. And with posts containing violent threats. We do our best to track the location of the offender. Then we report IPs/emails to domain registrars and web hosts.It’s also important to note that we don’t moderate reports of ourselves, which actually happens. As of this writing, I’ve been reported five times. All were (objectively) resolved without moderation.
One challenging topic is mutual aid (community economic support).
Mutual Aid
First off, I believe in mutual aid. I don’t trust wealthy people or government systems to inherently take care of people. We need to take care of each other. Good, healthy mutual aid is a beautiful thing. This is the way.
But moderating mutual aid is a conundrum. The posts are from either people in need or scammers, and it’s not always easy to tell which one it is. We want to protect our Mastodon community from the latter. So we have to make judgment calls.
Sometimes it’s obvious, but most of the time we have to do some sleuthing. We analyze the account and related IP addresses. We conduct reverse image searches and research online profiles. It’s detective work.
I’d like to say we always get this right. We don’t. And it breaks our hearts if we make a mistake on this one. But we try to get it right. We really do.
Because we care, all of this has an impact on our mental health. Some negative, some positive.
Negative Impact on Mental Health
Content warning: I don’t details about traumatic content. But I do mention some topics that may be triggering.Much of what we do is routine. But things can get bad, mentally. We take breaks when needed, knowing the others have our back. I’m grateful for this. Because I have definitely needed it.
There are two usual suspects that push the envelope:
- Traumatic content
- Being personally-targeted by people we’ve moderated
Traumatic Content
This section is difficult to discuss. I’ve tried to represent moderators as a whole in the rest of this article. But I’m going to personalize this section. Even though other moderators have shared similar sentiments, I don’t want to speak for anyone else on this.I’ve seen some things. Really, really, really unimaginable things. Things I never wanted to see in my life that are now in my brain. And I’ve brought almost all of them to therapy.
People get reported for obvious things: slurs, misogyny, homophobia, xenophobia, etc. It’s painful to repeatedly see those words. Even when they’re not directed at me, I hate seeing them. It reminds me of the hate that exists in the world. It muddies the waters while trying to find strength to have even a sliver of optimism about the state of the world. I find myself saying “fuck you, asshole” while moderating these posts.
But there are other reports that stand out. You know these people exist in the world, but when you see them first hand it’s horrifying. CSAM in particular. But also violent threats, especially when used with discrimination.
The words and sentiments alone are hard to moderate. But often there are images. And try as I might, I am unable to shake them.
Targeted Attacks on Moderators
We’re volunteers trying to keep everyone safe, not monsters. And, yet, we get targeted. Sometimes personally. That’s not okay.I’m certain every moderator has a story. Mine is that some people targeted my family. I discovered that some nazis found a photo of my kids from one of my lectures. They posted it to some repugnant forum, engaging in a racist, homophobic, bigoted hate fest.
They got my kids involved. My kids! Why? Because I dared delete a post filled with the same types of attacks against someone of color on Mastodon.
Positive Impact on Mental Health
The upside is that moderation gives me some control.Watching a fascist autocracy unfold before your eyes is terrifying. Everything is collapsing on a massive scale in myriad ways. It’s enough to make a person feel helpless.
While it’s not monumental, I do get to curb some of that fascism through moderation. I get to push buttons with labels that read “delete post” and “suspend.” When some ignorant sociopath is harassing people, I get to wave a magic wand and make them disappear. At least from our corner of Mastodon.
That’s empowering. And meaningful. It does make a difference because I get to silence them. I can’t begin to describe how good that feels. Just a little tiny bit of justice.
We also once helped someone who posted a cry for help. He was talking about ending his life. Someone reported his post to see if we could help, and we did. Every once in a while I check on his account. He’s still there, posting cool stuff. I like to think we played a role in that.
Conclusion
So that’s a firehose of information, but it’s only part of the story. If you read this far, you deserve a cookie. I could imagine that a large percentage of lurkers and a maybe more reasonable community than other platforms could be helping factors?
My mastodon account is on a kind of small instance, and I'd love to be able to report posts directly to the originating instance, without also reporting it to "my" admin. I just don't wasn't then to waste their time locally blocking a clear spam account, that should (and usually will be) removed by the originating instance in a couple hours.

I am afraid, that removal of spam account does not necessarily federate to another instance. On Mastodon activities federate mainly to instances an account, which made/edited/deleted the post, is followed from. (Or an instance can subscribe to relay, which exchanges all activities between all participating instances).
Report always landing to your admin may be something good in light of this...

That's why i prefer being mod there. On any lemmy/mbin/piefed instance, we can scale our mod team based on community's topic and its subcriber.
If the community is political/news...we increase our team. On chill community, 3 mods is enough. And if there is more users than we can add news mods.

Don't know about you, but whenever I see hate groups specifically targeting children, I think the intention is very clear. Not just spreading hate, but also wanting to act on one of the socially forbidden sex acts as well.

This has been the fate of Grigory Skvortsov, a 35-year-old photographer and musician from Perm.
Skvortsov was one of thousands across Russia who purchased the 2021 publication Secret Soviet Bunkers by historian Dmitry Yurkov. The book reproduced scores of once secret diagrams of Soviet installations that had recently been declassified.
Some supplementary scans were made available with the book, which Skvortsov purchased. He later shared some of those documents with an unnamed American journalist.
Since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Russia has drastically expanded the scope of what can be deemed a "state secret."
In letters to friends, Skvortsov says the Russian authorities opened the case against him in order to hide their own failures in not noticing potentially sensitive information was being freely sold and passed around online.
“I did not have access to state secrets and had no malicious intent," the photographer wrote from detention. “The data was not protected by the state.... These facts are being ignored by the prosecution and the courts, who are treating the case formally, clearly out of fear of repression from the FSB."

I need the Urdu language. I have made a request on Transifex, and I want to know how long it will take until I hear from those in charge. I have a loose schedule nowadays and would like to start and finish translation for my language. Thanks.

I think it's generally a brilliant solution but there are a couple of problems here:
- The scanner seems to flag fucking everything and charge for minor damage where a human would probably flag it as wear.
- No one is allowed to correct the scanner:
Perturbed by the apparent mistake, the user tried to speak to employees and managers at the Hertz counter, but none were able to help, and all "pointed fingers at the 'AI scanner.'" They were told to contact customer support — but even that proved futile after representatives claimed they "can’t do anything."
Sounds to me like they're just trying to replace those employees. That's why they won't let them interfere.

The entire point of this system - like anything a giant company like Hertz does - is not to be fair to the customer. The point is to screw the customer over to make money.
Not allowing human employees to challenge the incorrect AI decision is very intentional, because it defers your complaint to a later time when you have to phone customer support.
This means you no longer have the persuasion power of being there in person at the time of the assessment, with the car still there too, and means you have to muster the time and effort to call customer services - which they are hoping you won't bother doing. Even if you do call, CS hold all the cards at that point and can easily swerve you over the phone.
It's all part of the business strategy.

Stop lights are meant to direct traffic. If someone runs a red light, is the technology not working as it should?
The technology here, using computer vision to automatically flag potential damage, needed to be implemented alongside human supervision - an employee should be able to walk by the car, see that the flagged damage doesn't actually exist, and override the algorithm.
The technology itself isn't bad, it's how hertz is using it that is.
I believe the unfortunate miscommunication here is that when @Ulrich@feddit.org said the solution was brilliant, they were referring to the technology as the "solution", and others are referring to the implementation as a whole as the "solution"

Let's make sure we're building up from the same foundation. My assumptions are:
1. Algorithms will make mistakes.
2. There's an acceptable level of error for all algorithms.
3. If an algorithm is making too many mistakes, that can be mitigated with human supervision and overrides.
Let me know if you disagree with any of these assumptions.
In this case, the lack of human override discussed in assumption 3 is, itself, a human-made decision that I am claiming is an error in implementing this technology. That is the human element. As management, you can either go on a snipe hunt trying to find an algorithm that is perfect, or you can make sure that trained employees can verify and correct the algorithm when needed. Instead hertz management chose option 3 - run an imperfect algorithm with absolutely 0 employee oversight. THAT is where they fucked up. THAT is where the human element screwed a potentially useful technology.
I work with machine learning algorithms. You will not, ever, find a practical machine learning algorithm that gets something right 100% of the time and is never wrong. But we don't say "the technology is malfunctioning" when it gets something wrong, otherwise there's a ton of invisible technology that we all rely on in our day to day lives that is "malfunctioning".

You're absolutely right. The technology isn't perfect if it needs to be implemented with supervision, but it can be good enough to have a role in everyday society.
Great examples are self checkout lanes, where there's always an employee watching, and speed cameras, which always have an officer reviewing and signing off on tickets.

Traffic lights are meant to direct traffic. Yet you don't expect them to prevent folks from running red lights. Folks don't expect them to, because that's not their role in their implementation - they are meant to be used alongside folks who will enforce traffic laws, and, maybe in fact, traffic controllers. This is arguably an example of an implementation done right.
This technology is meant to flag car damage. If there was a correct implementation, I would be able to say "folks don't expect them to be perfect, because that's not their role in their implementation - they are meant to be used alongside employees trained to verify damage exists, who can correct the algorithm if needed", but the implementation in this case is sadly bad.
At the end of the day, you will never have a "perfect" computer vision algorithm. But you can have many "good enough" ones, depending on how they're implemented.
The US lacks even the most basic consumer protections it seems.
In Australia, companies still try to give you the run around, but I am extremely confident this wouldn't fly here. Even though I'm not a lawyer.
If you literally can't get a hold of them, they're breaking Australian Consumer Law, that's a slam dunk to charge back the card and dare them to take you to your state's relevant tribunal that hears cases like this. It costs either like $70 to file, you can represent yourself easily, and if you're low-income, it's literally free.
They don't want to waste money on fighting you. If you're confident you're clearly in the right, it's very easy to get a company to back down.
This is a great time to remind everyone to take photos before and after getting a rental car, because otherwise it's your word against them.
You are spot on here. AI is great for sensitivity (noticing potential issues), but terrible for specivity (giving many false positives).
The issue is how AI is used, not the AI itself. They don't have a human in the checking process. They should use AI scanner to check the car. If it's fine, then you have saved the employee from manually checking, which is a time-consuming process and prone to error.
If the AI spots something, then get an employee to look at the issues highlighted. If it's just a water drop or other false positive, then it should be a one click 'ignore', and the customer goes on their way without charge. If it is genuine, then show the evidence to the customer and discuss charges in person. Company still saves time over a manual check and has much improved accuracy and evidence collection.
They are being greedy by trying to eliminate the employee altogether. This probably doesn't actually save any money, if anything it costs more in dealing with complaints, not to mention the loss of sales due to building a poor image.

I will bring this up again like I did my last post concerning Hertz.
While I was in Albuquerque, NM getting off the Amtrak train, I reserved our rental car from their website and went to the nonexistent address with no phone number or anything. After half an hour we called another Hertz and they basically told us to piss off and call the location we booked the car. I have few brands that I boycott and now they will be Nestle products (and sub companies) and Hertz.

I'm interested in examples of when name-brand is worse quality, but yes, name-brand isn't always objectively better, and is often produced in the same facility.
As usual, it depends, so don't knee-jerk to all one or the other, if it matters to you, compare the packaging (it'll say where it was produced, so you can guess when it's the same product).

I used Avis in a different state for a short car rental and they sent me a hefty bill for some kind of damage below the vehicle a couple months after returning it.
I refused to pay and will refuse to use them ever again. Your mileage may vary.
I rent through Costco and try to pick Alamo when possible. Avis is decent but they often share a line with Budget which can take forever.

The term AI itself is a shifting of goalposts. What was AI 50 years ago* is now AGI, so we can call this shit AI though it's nothing of the sort. And everybody's falling for the hype: governments, militaries, police forces, care providers, hospitals... not to speak of the insane amounts of energy & resources this wastes, and other highly problematic, erm, problems. What a fucking disaster.
If it wasn't for those huge caveats I'd be all for it. Use it for what it can do (which isn't all that much), research it. But don't fall for the shit some tech bro envisions for us.

Agreed. But most people have neither the time nor capacity to track all of these specifics, so popular discussions of AI-related technologies inevitably break down into a mud pit of people talking past each other about various different topics.
Which, if you think about it, is true of most public discussions about any complex topic. It almost invariably devolves into a miscommunication or a discussion about semantics.
People have the capacity to track genres and whatnot, what's so different about this?
I think people could understand if explained probably, but unfortunately journalists rarely dive deeply enough to do that. It really doesn't need to get too involved:
- machine learning - tell an algorithm what it's allowed to change and what a "good" output is and it'll handle the rest to find the best solution
- Bayesian networks - probability of an event given a previous event; this is the underpinnings of LLMs
- LLM - similar to Bayesian networks, but with a lot more data
And so on. If people can associate a technology with common applications, it'll work a lot more like genres and people will start to intuit limitations of various technologies.
What's different is that most people will see it as "tech stuff" and mentally file it in a drawer with spare extension cords and adapters. They don't care to deeply study or catalog things. Nerds care about that, and most people here, including me, are nerds, but most people are not nerds and consider learning to be a form of torture.
People writ-large don't care about proper genre labels either, they just kinda pick a vibe and guess off of it. Look at all the -core suffixed aesthetic names that cropped up in the last decade.

From the 1950s onward AI was expected to evolve quickly as computing evolved, that never happened. Instead, AI mostly topped out with decision trees, like those used for AI in videogames. ML pried the field back open, but not in the ways we expected.
AGI and ASI were coined in the early 2000s to set apart the goal of human-level intelligence from other kinds of AI like videogame AI. This is a natural result of the field advancing in unexpected, divergent directions. It’s not meant to move the goal post, but to clarify future goals against past progress.
It is entirely possible that we develop multiple approaches to AGI that necessitate new terminology to differentiate them. It’s the nature of all evolution, including technology and language.
The current situation is a bubble based on an over hyped extension of the cloud compute boom. Nearly a trillion dollars of capital expenditure over the past 5 years from major tech companies chasing down this white whale and filling up new data centers with Nvidia GPUs. With revenue caping out at maybe 45 billion annually across all of them for “AI” products and services, and that’s before even talking about ongoing operation costs such as power for the data centers, wages for people working on them, or the wages of people working to develop services to run on them.
None of this is making any fucking profit, and every attempt to find new revenue ether increases their costs even more or falls flat on its face the moment it is actually shipped. No one wants to call it out at higher levels because NVIDIA is holding up the whole fucking stock market right now, and them crashing out because everyone stoped buying new GPUs will hurt everyone else’s growth narrative.

Too many people these days don't use or have access to credit cards for services like this. Many people I know only use bank debit cards, or worse, use the debit preloaded cash cards issued by their employers' payroll service provider.

And I would not trust a preloaded card provider to assist. You are neither their business partner nor their customer and that puts your interests at the bottom of a very long list. You have to hope some law is on your side or that your issue is so trivial that resolving it is more cost effective then dealing with you.
I don't understand how this works out badly for the person using a debit card. You pay for the vehicle and if they try to make you pay more you ask for proof and if you don't get it you walk away.

With a credit card you're spending the bank's money. If you can convince the bank you're in the right, it's you and the bank's lawyers recovering the bank's money.
As a debit card user, the banks will support your legal rights, because it's good business for your clients to prosper. While the bank's lawyers won't go to bat for you, many will be willing to give you quasi-legal and quasi-financial tidbits or point you in the right direction.
As the bank's client's employee, you're basically on your own. Good luck.

I demanded a refund. She pointed to terms.
I said I was going to issue a charge back and blast them online in every platform I could find.
She spoke to the owner and I got my refund.
Oh, so Hertz has gotten wise to... every online platform that exists: Outsourcing all responsibility for their user-hostile bullshit to some vague "system" that cannot be held accountable.
I'm so sorry but the advertised cost has doubled because... Computer says so! No, sir, there's nothing I can do, sir, you see it's the system.
And you can't go anywhere else, because everyone else is doing it (or soon will be) too!

I get why they'd use something like this to save money and time but, is suspect that correct use would include a human check before charging people.
We need to start pushing for laws on this kind of thing. Automated checks are fine if you, as the company, trust they won't have too many false negatives. If you aren't checking for false positives, though, you should be heavily fined for each false report. $25,000 per false report sounds like a good place to start. Hopefully that would be large enough to not just be the cost of doing business.
Hertz has also called the cops on their customers for a variety of asinine reasons.
I steer clear of them and Enterprise (Enterprise has been working the whole shaft for ICE).

I'm done with Pixels. The first one was amazing. But the quality has been going gradually downhill for both the main series and the A series phones.
I love how they just make things worse indiscriminately now. Like you'd expect that if a company turns evil, they make things worse for profit, but google often doesn't even care about that and makes everything worse randomly.
The clearest example I have is the maps app, which used to let you tap once to clear the search and directions bars off the screen. They removed that in one update for absolutely no fucking reason, so now a third+ of the screen is blocked at all times. If that space displayed ads or something at least I'd get that they were making an app shittier for profit, but nowadays more often than not everything just seems to be shitty because they don't give a fuck anymore.
Due to the risk of battery fires, Google said that devices with more than 400 charge cycles could see their capacity and charging speed drastically reduced.
Apparently they design phones that'll last just over a year before self-igniting.
Does 400 charge cycles really amount to just over a year of use for most people? I’m assuming one cycle means a full power cycle, not just a top up.
For reference (and I understand it’s a bit apples to oranges) I’ve had my iPhone 15 since Dec 2023 and charge it every night and it’s currently showing 125 charge cycles.
Oh well they were forced to acknowledge a problem that needed a fix and what they did was they asked Gemini how do we fix this which Gemini had zero problems at all, not even an inconvenience, in giving them it's fix so that's what they went with without a single further thought employed in the matter

I just got rid of my Pixel 6a because it had one of the bad batteries. Tip to anyone taking advantage of the trade in rebate, DO NOT get the $150 Google Store credit and be like me thinking you can use it on the Google Fi Store to purchase a new Pixel. The $150 store credit is only towards the purchase of a Pixel phone via the Google Store. Take the $100 cash rebate option instead because it tells you once you choose either option, you cannot change it.
My hope was to get the Pixel 9a on my account for $249 (activation discount) on my account and then use the $150 store credit... nope.
It's all well and good being oh so principled like you're making yourself out to be, but phones are expensive, and the above user is being completely rational for wanting to settle on a Pixel 9a for $250, especially when the other OEMs have plenty of their own problems.

As for the Xcover series in particularx the specs are worse for the amount you're paying. Camera is worse, SoC is slower, assuming if you are conparing the price of a brand new mainstream S or A series phones to a brand new Xcover series. But if you don't care about worse specs for the swappable battery, then sure, go ahead. I personally wouldn't get the Xcover series, doesn't seem like a good deal, the screen is LCD and I'm way too used to OLED/AMOLED of the more mainstream phones.

The battery of my Pixel 6 started to bloat and leak last week. I contacted support. After a bit of back and forth where they asked me to provide proof of purchase and pictures of the phone, they sent me a brand new Pixel 6 and told me to just recycle the old one.
I reported the issue on Tuesday, received the new phone on Friday. That's not bad support for a 4 year old device that's long out of warranty. I fully expected them to tell me to go F my self.

I had a Nexus 5 (also LG) and it was the best I'd had for years. Ran lineageOS on it (maybe it was CyanogenMod still I can't remember) but that thing was the shit.
I left it on top of my car once and ended up destroying it. Swapped the modem into an EU model (the modem and GPS module survived, all other components failed) and had basically a brand new phone afterwards.
The Nexus 4 was a great phone in my opinion.

The 8 had known screen issues, and they were fixed even out of warranty. After six months it would have been within warranty, so you definitely should have been able to get that fixed. I know, I had to have mine replaced too.
I've had a 4, 6, and 8. No issues. But I know that if I do have hardware issues, Google will address them like these screen and battery issues.
Cool. I'm not going to do that another three times when I can spend less money on phones that don't break.

Remember that Discover is self-banked (unlike Visa/Mastercard that banks sign up with). This means that every credit line needs to be backed by... well ... A bank.
Bigger banks mean more credit opportunities, better interest rates (etc. etc). Deeper credit lines.

Your country may have something similar, look it up. And then you can always pay with PayPal by connecting your bank account directly, with no cards involved (at least in Europe).

How is an even more niche process that involves having to go to an exchange to buy crypto then safe guard it and it being a taxable event when buying goods with it in some countries a solution?
People are wanting a mainstream alternative that the companies that they buy from use, and if the companies don't care to use it then it doesn't matter for the average person.
Even people actually into crypto are less interested in spending it because it exposes their balance if they aren't using coin mixers or monero which can make them a target. Not to mention most just see it as stock they hope goes to the moon as opposed to going through the cumbersome process of buying for the purpose of spending it like a depreciating asset.

Unfortunately crypto is already complicated as is. And as the other user said bitcoin isn't the best choice. Monero would be as close to the overall goal as it is possible.
Now using monero would be more anonymous than credit/debit cards making it a better option - but not many vendors support it, and cash is just simpler than any other option.
In Canada, I'd like to see Interac develop into one. Hopefully more prominence wouldn't ruin it

Apparently there is a complicated thing I can do where I have to go to the post office and then I can send money directly to a company. But that's really inconvenient (it's like a 30-second walk from my house, I'm not doing that) and I don't think steam accepts that payment method anyway. In fact I've never heard of anyone except that payment method so I don't really understand why it exists.

An alternative to PayPal, called WERO is currently in it's rollout process in Germany, Belgium and France. In October the next step will be activated, allowing payments in e-commerce. Later down the road, you'll be able to pay in real shops. Luxembourg and Netherlands are to join in next. More and more banks start to adopt WERO.
I urge everyone to use WERO as much as you can. It's flying a bit under the radar at the moment and this must be a success. Hopefully more EU members will join soon.

Why do all y'all jump to nukes with this story!? He clearly wants more power for his AI schemes. No conspiracy, the motivation is simple.

Weapons grade: 90%+
Even a bugfuck administration like Trump's isn't going to allow private enterprise to produce weapons-grade fissile material without serious fucking oversight and total control over every step. Why would any government give up their most powerful weapons?
On top of that, it takes hella tech to assemble a thermonuclear weapon. Every government that has a solid intelligence apparatus tracks the tools, scientists and materials involved. An atom bomb is not a hydrogen bomb, not by an order of magnitude, and you can't exactly hide the means for rolling your own Little Boy.
Not trying to bag on you OP, just feel like I'm taking crazy pills when we think a billionaire could get access to nukes.
Ever read Clancy's The Sum of all Fears? Even having obfuscated some facts, building a nuke is simply impossible without every intelligence agency on Earth knowing about it.
Terrorists dropping a "fizzle" on the Super Bowl required many narrative acrobatics. 1,532 things had to go wrong for them to slip that through. And it still fizzled.

Martyr for what? You have to deeply stand for something very popular (amongst a group of people with beliefs) that is very unpopular with another group. Of all the people in the world, Peter is not running the risc of becoming a martyr - dead or alive.
I see this mistake as a comment more and more often. I'm not saying anything on him remaining alive or not; that's a completely different set of questions.
I just mean victimhood is usually the go to for far right assholes, and all assholes really. Especially the ultra wealthy ones who have the money and influence to spin the truth into whatever they want. Like you leave them no choice but to be even more evil the next time.
I could totally see whoever comes in his footsteps saying some shit like, "You saw what they did to Thiel. I had to crack down early on to protect myself."
Thiel is all-in an AI. AI requires monstrous amounts of power. Nothing to see here.
I can't stop these animals from pursuing AI, but I'm happy they're going all out for nuclear power. Anything but fossil fuels is a win in my book.
