📢 Beta Testers Wanted – DNA Companion (Bioinformatics Android Tool)
Hey fellow devs and researchers 👋
I'm currently beta testing an Android app I built called DNA Companion — designed for students, scientists, and researchers working with DNA sequences, PCR, or bioinformatics.
The app is simple, offline, and meant to support basic sequence work without cloud dependencies or ads.
🔬 Key Features:
Convert DNA sequences and generate complementary strands
Highlight invalid or non-DNA characters (e.g., typos, mixed content)
Support for degenerate bases (like R, Y, M, K — useful in primer design)
100% offline – no data collection, no ads
Save, copy, and export sequences with ease
🧪 Why I’m Posting:
Google requires 12+ testers to use the app for 14 days before I can go live on the Play Store. If you're interested in supporting indie dev + science tools, I'd really appreciate your help!
💡 How to Join the Beta Test:

Apple sues Apple Cinemas theater chain for trademark infringement
Apple has sued the owner of Apple Cinemas for trademark infringement, alleging that the Walpole, Massachusetts-based theater chain will create market confusion and dilute the tech giant's branding as it carries out plans for "aggressive nationwide expansion."
Case file: fingfx.thomsonreuters.com/gfx/…
You need different trademark for each class (there are generally 45 of them, can vary per country) and then you can have narrow or broad scope in that class or even multiple trademarks in the same class.
Apple has several from narrow scope to extremely broad.
Can't list all of them due to character limit. But you can see them here: privatebin.net/?3f9fedd0e2ea78…

Perplexity is using stealth, undeclared crawlers to evade website no-crawl directives
Perplexity is repeatedly modifying their user agent and changing IPs and ASNs to hide their crawling activity, in direct conflict with explicit no-crawl preferences expressed by websites. The Cloudflare Blog
Ignoring the self-promo part of the article, Cloudflare is in big part responsible for all of this. Their home page promotes mostly "AI" tools, they are even offering "pay-per-crawl" to make it a viable business model.
So while you correctly shit on Perplexity, don't forget that Cloudflare is even worse enemy and not a friend.
Organizing Jellyfin
I would like to know how you have organized your jellyfin/streaming service content.
Especially if you have somethin other than simply "Movies - Series - Anime".
I'm struggling with discoverability, and was wondering if it could be solved by changing the structure.
like this
I'm on Plex but ran into the same issue years ago. My method was to split Movies and TV libraries into "Movies," "Animated Movies," "TV," and "Animated TV" (also 4K TV and 4K Movies but this is all duplicate content that I don't allow to be remotely streamed).
From there, I made sure to put everything i could into collections. More recently, I've made a bunch of new movie collections based on genre, decade, director (maybe the top 15 with the most content in my library), and actor (again only the top few) and then adjusted the sort title of these collections to keep them at the top of the library in an organized fashion. ThePosterDB was great for this as I found matched poster sets for each of the above categories and so it made everything look great too.
Basically my strategy is to condense everything possible while creating new categories to easily filter things down when searching for something to watch (e.g. Action movies or 1990s movies). Some other tips are setting library filters to "unwatched" an/or creating "watch lists" of things I want to see at some point but don't feel like watching at the moment. This last one is a Plex feature but you could use something else like IMDB or Trakt to do the same.
It can definitely be a chore to find something to watch when you have several thousand choices between TV and Movies so anything you can do to knock those numbers down will help. Something else you might look into is setting up PseudoTV, ErsatzTV or something similar. These allow you to create your own "TV channels" using your content meaning you'll have channels "playing" predetermined content constantly giving you something to flip through when you can't decide on something specific. It even gives you the option to insert old commercials or change content based on the time of day so you can really mimic old network TV.
I just have it split by Movies and Shows.
But for discoverability I sometimes go to Movies, sort by "random" and then scroll from the top. This makes sure I'm not just seeing the 10 same movies all the time.
From there you can also filter by played status or genre or whatever you're feeling like at the time, because in my opinion having everything together and filtering is more useful than pre-categorizing based on what I think I'll want later, and being stuck with it.

How to block Israel in qbittorrent (or any similar torrent client)
cross-posted from: hexbear.net/post/3207959
I was going to make this exact tutorial but when making it I found out someone beat me to it about a year ago so I figured I'd repost that one instead since it's a bit more in depth. Also while in many countries people use VPNs to torrent, making measures like this less helpful, occupiers of Palestine don't really tend to use a VPN due to minimal prosecution so catching them with this method is a lot easier than it would be against a country like the US for example.
We first need to obtain a blocklist of all possible Israeli ip addresses. This can be obtained from two sources.
- ip2location.com/free/visitor-b… (choose peer guardian format)
- iblocklist.com/
Due to the nature of how IP addresses are distributed, these blocklists have to be updated, but that isn't a huge concern for us right now.
When you downloaded the file for Israel from either site, it should look something like this:
Israel:2.16.36.0-2.16.36.255 Israel:2.22.233.0-2.22.233.255 Israel:2.52.0.0-2.55.255.255 Israel:2.57.228.0-2.57.231.255 Israel:2.58.33.0-2.58.33.255 Israel:3.2.42.0-3.2.42.63 Israel:3.5.56.0-3.5.59.255 Israel:5.22.128.0-5.22.135.255 Israel:5.28.128.0-5.28.191.255 Israel:5.29.0.0-5.29.255.255 Israel:5.100.248.0-5.100.255.255
If you wish to add more nations to the list such as TERF island or the 4th Reich, then you can append the files on top of each other into one file.Once you have the file, rename it with the
.p2p
extension so that qbittorrent will use it. Then, in your qbittorrent client, go toPreferences -> Connection
. At the very bottom you should see a section labeledIP Filtering
. In the Filter Path checkbox, select your .p2p file. You may also check the box to block trackers as well.In other bittorrent software (hopefully you're using one that's libre) there should be a similar option for ip filtering.
There you go! You have effectively banned Israel from being your peer while you're doing p2p transfers. This won't stop Zionists from peering with you using a VPN or other undetected server, but this has done wonders for my mood.
Always remember to port forward and seed when torrenting (A non-Zionist VPN like AirVPN or ProtonVPN can allow you to do that). Only a Zionist does a download and run.

I was talking on my part, don't know about others. I'm a constant seeder (7+ years) and monitor peers from time to time or when downloading something.
During these years I've never seen a single Israeli seed on a rare torrent, or high download traffic from them. I'm being completely honest, the only time I see them is when they are downloading something from me.

As Gaza suffers, US companies are reaping horrific payoffs | Katrina vanden Heuvel
War profiteering is a phenomenon as ancient as war itself, but Albanese’s investigation shows that the military-industrial-technological complex is reaping uniquely horrible payoffs in Palestine. Albanese describes how companies led by Lockheed Martin have built fighter jets for Israel that have carried out bombings which have killed or wounded almost 200,000 Palestinians. She describes Palantir’s work with the Israeli military, and its consummation of that partnership by holding a board meeting in Tel Aviv (Palantir has denied involvement in IDF programs identifying Gaza targets). And she brings to light how Caterpillar Inc equipment has demolished homes and hospitals, crushing to death civilians stuck inside those structures.Perhaps the most hypocritical offenders are the members of the Magnificent Seven. Google’s unofficial motto was once “Don’t be evil,” but now the company has joined Amazon to provide cloud computing services to Israel and its military for a persuasive $1.2bn. Albanese quotes an Israeli colonel who calls this technology “a weapon in every sense of the word”, a cloud as deadly as any poison gas.
Beyond pouring into the streets, Americans can also boycott the corporations living large while the population of Palestine dwindles. The employees of those very companies can do the same, like the 50 now-terminated workers at Google who led “No Tech for Apartheid” protests last year. Otherwise, the warning recently issued by Beinart will remain true: “Blood is on our hands as Americans because it is our weapons that are responsible for those children starving to death.”

Setting up a file server can be intimidating to the uninitiated. There are many servers to choose from, and then you need to decide how to install it — Docker? Kubernates? Well, what’s …Hackaday
I've literally never felt like I needed a file server to be easier and support more protocols, and this seems like it's trying to do way too much at once. HTTP is beautiful and convenient but as a bespoke javascript-heavy API it's really not a particularly great way to manage files, FTP sucks and if you still need it for something you need to re-evaluate your life choices, TFTP is useful in extremely niche applications that I wouldn't want to hook my entire file server up to anyway and certainly don't want running along side these other options, WebDav is fine but again really only necessary in niche applications which you don't need or want your entire file system hooked up to (or if you don't know how to VPN) and this doesn't seem to support SFTP/SSHFS which is what I would consider a modern standard for a secure file transfer protocol.
Just use Samba and/or ssh, every Linux distribution comes with packages for them. Both are widely used and battle-hardened, and between the two they are compatible with almost everything. You don't really need all that other stuff.
In some ways it’s the inverse of the UNIX Philosophy: instead of doing one thing perfectly, this program is doing everything [9001] could think of, and doing it “good enough”.
As a believer in the UNIX philosophy (armed with an understanding of why it is fundamentally useful) it horrifies me that either developers or users think this is a good thing.
I'm not sure if this would fall under the definition of "skill issue", but I've never had any luck getting Samba to work on even a local network.
This may be the same argument at "immutable" distros, having an environment where the user cannot fuck it up will be the best way to spur adoption rates, and eventually ambitious users will use more granular methods like you described.
I probably will use this.
As US climate data-gathering is gutted, Australian forecasting is now at real risk
This year, Australia has experienced record-breaking floods, tropical cyclones, heatwaves on land and in the ocean, drought, coral bleaching, coastal erosion and devastating algal blooms. Over the past five years, insured losses from extreme events have risen to A$4.5 billion annually – more than double the 30-year average. But even as damage from climate change intensifies, political change overseas is threatening Australia’s ability to track what’s happening now, and predict what will happen next.
The United States has historically been a world leader in earth observation systems and freely sharing the gathered data. Sharing of data, expertise and resources between scientists in the US and Australia makes possible the high-quality weather, climate and ocean monitoring and forecasting we rely on.
But this is no longer guaranteed. Under the Trump administration, key US scientific institutions and monitoring programs are facing deep cuts. These cuts aren’t just cosmetic – they will end essential data gathering. Australia has long relied on these data sources. When they dry up, it will make it much harder for scientists to look ahead.

Chris Smalls, the former Amazon Labor Union president who led the first successful U.S. union drive at Amazon's Staten Island warehouse in 2022, was violently detained by Israeli forces on July 26-27, 2025, while participating in a Gaza aid mission"When he reached the Israeli prison, U.S. human rights defender Chris Smalls was physically assaulted by seven uniformed individuals," the Freedom Flotilla Coalition announced. "They choked him and kicked him in the legs, leaving visible signs of violence on his neck and back"
Smalls was aboard the Handala, an aid ship attempting to break Israel's blockade of Gaza, when Israeli Defense Forces seized the vessel and detained its crew. As the only Black person among the 20 detained activists, Smalls faced notably harsher treatment
The U.S. government failed to contact any of the seven American citizens aboard, while other countries like France, Spain and Italy reached out to their detained nationals. According to Palestinian American attorney Huwaida Arraf, who was released due to her Israeli citizenship, the activists refused deportation and began a hunger strike
"I'm thinking of Chris Smalls. And about how, because he's Black, no Greta Thunberg, no celebrity, no darling of the liberal class, he might not make it out alive," wrote author Camonghne Felix
While smaller unions condemned Smalls's detention, the Teamsters union remained silent despite having recently affiliated with the Amazon Labor Union.

How the EU-US trade deal extends beyond economics
Europe's reaction to the EU-US trade deal was rather muted, with France and Hungary heavily criticizing the agreement. Experts say the deal may have geopolitical ramifications and continue Europe's reliance on the US.
Note: this article affirms some of the theories & views on the the "why's" of the deal
Key takeaways bullets, which are paraphrased later on:
- Security guarantees Europe (Ukraine)
- Dependency energy, weapons,chips
- Geopolitical, common threat China.
Europe needs to become more self-reliant, yes, unfortunately, today we are not there yet. This event showcases the need to work for more Intra EU co-operation, innovation and streamlining.
"Meanwhile, Brussels emphasizes that the deal goes beyond the economy. "It's not just about trade. It's about security. It's about Ukraine. It's about current geopolitical volatility," EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic in Brussels said on Monday.
He told reporters that while he couldn't go into all the details of the talks between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump, he could say for sure that they were about more than just trade. For him, it is a big plus that the two biggest economies and closest allies are on the same page when it comes to the geopolitical issues of today.
"Elvire Fabry, Senior Research Fellow at the Jacques Delors Institute, finds it difficult to even describe the recent talks as negotiations. She argues that the EU's hands were tied due to its dependence on security guarantees from the US. According to Fabry, the framework conditions would have been entirely different if the EU had not needed US support to help defend Ukraine in its war with Russia."
"AI chips and weapons "shows Europe's continued reliance on the US in other ways." Buying from the US is the "best of bad options" for the EU, she says, and makes it clear that Europe has not achieved strategic autonomy."
He said the US has the same issues with China in many areas. "So it goes without saying that we should work together with our allies."
I would argue "we are not there yet" is exclusively the fault of the EU public.
The fullscale invasion happened 3.5 years ago, that's more than enough time to begin large scale rearmament and production capacity enlargement. Especially since the impotency of American centre-right is not a secret.
Not to mention russia's invasion of Georgia in 2008 and beginning of the invasion of Ukraine in 2014 (for which Merkel rewarded the russians with Nord Stream 2).
And if you want a common policy and decision making process, you have to make sure that the participants have a common interests. The Hungarians should have been kicked out of the EU and NATO a long time ago.
would argue "we are not there yet" is exclusively the fault of the EU public.
The citizens have a responsibility, for sure, as do Politicians (see Brexit and/or Nato enlargement). The many cirises that EU needed to face off, also took some of the focus away.
I think the important part is that we have started to move in the right direction, and are gaining momentum, but still Europe is a slow Giant, and things take time.
If we citizens and politicians can work together towards one shared plan, that would definitely speed things up But I'd rather not underestimate internal political divisions, fear, greed, foreign malicious influences and some moral or financial corruption.
Though, then again, I believe in the end, we are strong enough to muddle through these hurdles.
I hope it too because, I don't want Ukraine to fall and I believe it won't; and
2. you are right,if Ruz doesn't fall though I believe they will, we are next.
Technically Europeans (& USA) are already in a warsituation ofcourse. And as China and NK pump up their supplies to Ruz, it's become a broader partly silent and open war.
Critics in the US are equally if not more worried about their economy, concerning the proposed EU-USA deal.
I believe this meme says it all ( POV USA):

The Role of AI and Big Data in Modern Geotechnical Engineering
Geotechnical Engineering is a specialized branch of civil engineering that focuses on the behavior of earth materials, such as soil and rock, and their interaction with man-made structures. Engineers in this field analyze the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of the ground to ensure the stability and safety of construction projects. Their work is essential for designing foundations, retaining walls, slopes, tunnels, and other infrastructure that must withstand natural forces like earthquakes, landslides, and erosion. By applying principles of soil mechanics and rock mechanics, geotechnical engineers help mitigate risks and optimize construction methods for long-term durability.
One of the key responsibilities of geotechnical engineering is conducting site investigations before construction begins. This involves soil sampling, laboratory testing, and in-situ measurements to assess ground conditions, such as bearing capacity, settlement potential, and groundwater levels. Advanced techniques like geophysical surveys and computer modeling are also used to predict how the soil will behave under different loads. These evaluations help engineers recommend appropriate foundation types—whether shallow (e.g., spread footings) or deep (e.g., piles or caissons)—to support structures safely and economically.
Geotechnical engineers also play a crucial role in addressing environmental and geohazard challenges. They design solutions to stabilize landslides, reinforce embankments, and prevent soil liquefaction during earthquakes. Additionally, they work on projects involving landfills, contaminated site remediation, and coastal protection systems to minimize environmental impact. With climate change increasing the frequency of extreme weather events, their expertise is becoming even more vital in developing resilient infrastructure that can adapt to changing conditions.
The field of geotechnical engineering continues to evolve with advancements in technology and materials. Innovations such as ground improvement techniques (e.g., soil stabilization with geosynthetics or grouting) and real-time monitoring systems enhance the precision and efficiency of geotechnical projects. Collaboration with other engineering disciplines ensures comprehensive solutions for complex challenges. As urbanization expands and infrastructure demands grow, geotechnical engineering remains fundamental to building safe, sustainable, and cost-effective structures on and below the Earth’s surface.

EU fails to agree Israeli suspension from research fund over Gaza
A European Commission proposal to deny Israel partial access to the EU's €95 billion Horizon Europe research fund failed to garner the necessary qualified majority support when EU ambassadors met in Brussels on Tuesday to discuss the issue.
Both Germany and Italy said they needed more time and would let the EU know if they come to a different position in the coming weeks, according to two sources familiar.
The Netherlands, Ireland, France, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Portugal, Malta and Spain all supported the Commission's plan with several saying they would also push the EU for stronger sanctions, potentially in trade, the sources said.
The Commission's motion to suspend Israel's participation in Horizon is in response to an EU report finding the country had breached human rights obligations in the EU-Israel Association Agreement.

Netanyahu has stated that Israel will move to annex parts of the Gaza Strip if a ceasefire agreement with Hamas is not reached
Soo, this basically is a guarantee that no actual cease fire will ever happen.......
It's still upsetting that the west in general still fails to challenge the government of Israel's narrative when it comes to any "cease fire". First of all, a cease fire generally implies that both sides are still engaged in hostilities. When in reality a cease fire in this scenario is more of the offer of the cessation of a genocide, which they could do unilaterally at anytime.
Secondly, there was already a "cease fire" deal where Hamas returned hostages and Israel failed to stop hostilities and never released their hostages. There is no reason to assume Israel is ever going to negotiate with any sort of good faith, and it should be called out to by anyone within reaching distance of a microphone.

Hebrew media reported last week that Shelley was out on a Friday night in Abu Dhabi with friends and acted in an “undignified” manner that “crossed the boundaries of personal space” on Friday evening.
...
In 2023, Haaretz reported that Shelley personally responded to an Israeli visa inquiry by a Brazilian woman. He told her in correspondence and in video chats that she needed to meet him in person before he would help her obtain a visa to visit Israel.
...
“When I turned on the camera, I saw he was lying on the bed, sweating,” the woman recounted. “He said he’d just returned from a walk. It was very inappropriate. I asked him if he’d rather talk later, and he said, ‘No, let’s talk now.’ He asked to meet with me in person and invited me to dinner in Brasilia. I felt pressured and harassed.”

While the Luftwaffe tried to resupply the 6th Army the Soviets now went on the offensive, the intensity of fighting within the city becoming more violent. Hundreds of “shock groups” consisting of fifty to a hundred soldiers broke into small groups to fight as highly lethal and lightly armed infantry-engineer squads of three to five personnel, moving swiftly and silently throughout the rubble or “hugging” the Germans near the frontlines to avoid the effectiveness of German airpower and artillery. Dozens of snipers took advantage of the destruction to find nearly perfect firing positions. Snipers successfully killed hundreds of German soldiers, providing a psychological boost to the Soviets while lowering German morale tremendously. Soviet tanks were used in a way that would unnerve armor crews of today: instead of being used for maneuver they were dug deep into the rubble, camouflaged, and used as pillboxes, their carefully prepared positions remaining unseen until they fired the first shot from just a short distance away. These tactics took a devastating toll on German personnel and vehicles over the following months.
So either the "most moral army in the world" and "most powerful army in the Middle East" is too incompetent to know about one of the most famous battles of the 20th century, or it is yet another piece of evidence that Israels goals was never to destroy Hamas, but to genocide the civilian population of Gaza.

Uptick in inflammatory posts
Has anyone else noticed this, across the fediverse, Lemmy specifically. A lot of new users, but also a lot of first posts that are very inflammatory/rage baity.
Do we have another legit influx of new users? Or do we just have some bad actors trying to stir the pot? Or maybe I'm imagining it.

Intentionally inflammatory posts? I haven't noticed an uptick, honestly. Doesn't mean there isn't one and doesn't mean I won't notice now that you posted it.
But I will say that I've basically stopped checking my notifications because all of a sudden it seems like almost every time I go in there, I've got at least one insufferable, hostile, negative, etc response or message in there. It didn't used to be that way.
Mostly I assume we must've recently gotten an influx of new users from Reddit or someplace similarly toxic. Things usually get a bit unfortunate for a time when that happens.

What do we call anti-Big-Tech Tech collectively?
With the Fediverse, Linux, privacy-preserving browsers and alternative protocols, people are creating a cornucopia of alternatives to Big Tech for a variety of reasons, but it seems like we don't have a collective term for technologies that gives users back their power and digital freedom, in opposition to Big Tech's machinations.
So maybe it's time we devise a catchy phrase for it. I thought of a couple, but they didn't quite scratch the itch:
- Small Tech - just sounds like smaller versions of Big Tech
- DIY Tech - implies you have to create everything yourself and be technically skilled
So, instead, I turn to the people of the Fediverse. What are your ideas for a catchy phrase for anti-Big-Tech Tech?
at the Rebel Tech Alliance we've started calling it Ethical Tech (or Eth Tech).
And the inverse is calling #bigtech services Death Tech - because they all end up getting involved in defence contracts at some point.

Fediverse Report #127 - an overview of all the fediverse clients
An overview of the fediverse clients I'm paying the most attention to.
For the Threadiverse readers, I'd love to hear more about what I've missed for threadiverse clients. Ill admit that I've paid less attention to those, so tell me what I've missed!

The Threadiverse app with the most standout feature is probably Quiblr and its recommendation system. I can't speak to if it's actually any good, as I don't use it, but it's interesting nontheless.
Also, I wish more apps has lemmy-ui 'chat' sort for comments. It's surprisingly nice for seeing new comments in a thread you've read before.

Whoa now, author sees a censoring filter as a most basic feature of a free and open chat infrastructure? It's not a social media client, you know? It was made for closed groups like governments and companies.
I use Fluffychat to talk with family and friends and for that it's good.
It really needs audit tools. Many organizations/communities use matrix as communication tool and suffer from spam problems.

US, China finish talks in Stockholm as tariff truce holds for now

Hey, we wouldn't want young people to know that they're being propagandized by the state of Israel to ignore a genocide, would we? Let's block them from informing themselves under the guise of "protecting" them from porn, which they'll still be able to get to from shadier websites that bombard them with malware. Yeah, that's the solution.

‘It destroyed me’: two more men accuse Christian rock star Michael Tait of sexual assault
When I was young, I went to several concerts for DC Talk (his band at the time) and the Newsboys (the band he became the frontman for).
While I'm still religious, I've since become an outspoken critic of corporate Christianity. Having a bunch of rich people singing pop songs to arenas full of people paying hundreds of dollars each with million-dollar lighting systems spotlighting the singers doesn't feel very humble and spiritual.
So it's fair to say I already had issues with this dude for profiteering of people's faith. With the newest revelations, I'm shaking with rage. This assholes and those who hid his actions pretended to be faithful servants while destroying lives and raking in profits and praise. They pretended to be exemplars of goodness so they could establish implicit trust, then used that trust to violate others.
Fuck them all.
