Linux gets a lot of love there on Fedi, so I think it would be cool if BSD would get some of it too.

For those unaware it's a Unix-like operation system, one of they key differences from Linux is a more permissive license, so PlayStation 4 or MacOS are originally based on it.

Over Linux I assume?
It has some unique stuff, like ZFC completely integrated. There's monolithic approach, Linux is just a kernel with a lot of distros, while with bsd kernel, userland and utilities are developed together. Some people say that is also more simple and logical than Linux. In my opinion both are good, it just depends on your use case.

Also most of ppl who use BSD use Linux too from my experience.

Koalicija organizacij in neformalnih skupin vabi na novinarsko konferenco v okviru kampanje Konec10 (EndOf10), ki bo potekala v torek, 7. oktobra 2055, ob 11.55 Knjižnici Otona Zupančiča.

Mednarodna kampanja EndOf10 se je sprožila v odgovor na napoved korporacije Microsoft, da prekine podporo za operacijski sistem Windows 10. Med 200 in 400 miljonov računalnikov po svetu ne podpira nadgradnje na Windows 11, kar pomeni, da bodo postali bodisi elektronske smeti bodisi varnostno tveganje za uporabnike.

Številne organizacije in skupine v Sloveniji smo se zato pridružile kampanji, da javnosti sporočimo, da obstaja druga pot nadgradnje računalnika, ki deluje hitro, učinkovito in varno tudi na starejših računalnikih. Gre za družino odprtokodnih operacijskih sistemov Linux.

Na novinarski konferenci bomo bolj podrobno predstavili razloge, zakaj smo se pridružili kampanji EndOf10, prednosti odprtokodnih operacijskih sistemov in naše aktivnosti v okviru kampanje. Več o kampanji lahko preberete uradni spletni strani kampanje endof10.org.

I read your link. Again, the idea of a utopia, a perfect society free from any problems whatsoever, heaven on Earth, is just as fictional as its opposite. Dystopia, a perfect hell on Earth free from any hope whatsoever, where a New World Order forces digital transactions and herds you like sheep, is just as fictional. Both are good settings for fiction, as you point out, but real life is more complicated and realistic than that.

The ruling class, the capitalists, don't do evil things for the sake of power or control. They do it for profits. Everything is subservient to that end. The genocide committed in Palestine is to keep Israel as a settler-colonial project to secure the US Empire's interests in the region. The fact that you get paid less than you create while a tiny owning class plunders the real fruits of your labor is for profit. The idea of a "New World Order" as you say using control of digital currency and a new third world war just to gain... power? Control? Works against those interests.

Reality doesn't work on such Marvel logic. Again, I am going to recommend reading theory. Here's an intro Marxist-Leninist reading guide I made, that I've linked before. A better world is possible, and it is neither easy nor impossible, it's merely difficult and real. We must roll up our sleeves and get to work so that we can plant the seeds of the trees our successors rest in the shade of!

Parenti also helps debunk common anti-Communist myths, from both the "left" and the right, in a quick-witted writing style. This is also an excellent time to watch the famous speech.
Section II: Historical and Dialectical Materialism
Ugh, philosophy? Really? YES!
Georges Politzer's Elementary Principles of Philosophy | Audiobook
By far my favorite primer on Marxist philosophy. By understanding Dialectical and Historical Materialism first, you make it easier to understand the rest of Marxism-Leninism. Don't be intimidated!
Friedrich Engels' Socialism: Utopian and Scientific | Audiobook
Further reading on Dialectical and Historical Materialism, but crucially introduces the why of Scientific Socialism, explaining how Capitalism itself prepares the conditions for public ownership and planning by centralizing itself into monopolist syndicates. This is also where Engels talks about the failures of previous "Utopian" Socialists.
Section III: Political Economy
That's right, it's time for the Law of Value and a deep-dive into Imperialism. If we are to defeat Capitalism, we must learn it's mechanisms, tendencies, contradictions, and laws.
Karl Marx's Wage Labor and Capital | Audiobook as well as Wages, Price and Profit | Audiobook
Best taken as a pair, these essays simplify the most important parts of the Law of Value. Marx is targetting those not trained in economics here, but you might want to keep a pen and some paper to follow along if you are a visual person.
Vladimir Lenin's Imperialism, The Highest Stage of Capitalism | Audiobook
Absolutely crucial and the most important work for understanding the modern era and its primary contradictions. Marxist-Leninists understand that Imperialism is the greatest contradiction in the modern era, which cascades downward into all manner of related contradictions. Knowing what dying Capitalism looks like, and how it behaves, means we can kill it.
Section IV: Revolutionary and Scientific Socialism
Can we defeat Capitalism at the ballot box? What about just defeating fascism? What about the role of the state?
Rosa Luxemburg's Reform or Revolution | Audiobook
If Marxists believed reforming Capitalist society was possible, we would be the first in line for it. Sadly, it isn't possible, which Luxemburg proves in this monumental writing.
Vladimir Lenin's The State and Revolution | Audiobook
Excellent refutation of revisionists and Social Democrats who think the State can be reformed, without needing to be replaced with one that is run by the workers, in their own interests.
Section V: Intersectionality and Solidarity
The revolution will not be fought by atomized individuals, but by an intersectional, international working class movement. Intersectionality is critical, because it allows different marginalized groups to work together in collective interest, unifying into a broad movement.
Vikky Storm and Eme Flores' The Gender Accelerationist Manifesto | (No Audiobook yet)
Critical reading on understanding misogyny, transphobia, enbyphobia, pluralphobia, and homophobia, as well as how to move beyond the base subject of "gender." Uses the foundations built up in the previous works to analyze gender theory from a Historical Materialist perspective.
Frantz Fanon's The Wretched of the Earth | Audiobook
De-colonialism is essential to Marxism. Without having a strong, de-colonial, internationalist stance, we have no path to victory nor a path to justice. Fanon analyzes Colonialism's dehumanizing effects, and lays out how to form a de-colonial movement, as well as its necessity.
Leslie Feinberg's Lavender & Red | Audiobook
Solidarity and intersectionality are the key to any social movement. When different social groups fight for liberation together along intersectional lines, the movements are emboldened and empowered ever-further.
Section VI: Putting it into Practice!
It's not enough to endlessly read, you must put theory to practice. That is how you can improve yourself and the movements you support. Touch grass!
Mao Tse-Tung's On Practice and On Contradiction | Audiobook
Mao wrote simply and directly, targeting peasant soldiers during the Revolutionary War in China. This pair of essays equip the reader with the ability to apply the analytical tools of Dialectical Materialism to their every day practice, and better understand problems.
Congratulations, you completed your introductory reading course!
With your new understanding and knowledge of Marxism-Leninism, here is a mini What is to be Done? of your own to follow, and take with you as practical advice.
Get organized. Join a Leftist org, find solidarity with fellow comrades, and protect each other. The Dems will not save you, it is up to us to protect ourselves. The Party for Socialism and Liberation and Freedom Road Socialist Organization both organize year round, every year, because the battle for progress is a constant struggle, not a single election. See if there is a chapter near you, or start one! Or, see if there's an org you like more near you and join it.
Read theory. Don't think that you are done now! Just because you have the basics, doesn't mean you know more than you do. If you have not investigated a subject, don't speak on it! Don't speak nonsense, but listen!
Aggressively combat white supremacy, misogyny, queerphobia, and other attacks on marginalized communities. Cede no ground, let nobody be forgotten or left behind. There is strength in numbers, when one marginalized group is targeted, many more are sure to follow.
Be industrious, and self-sufficient. Take up gardening, home repair, tinkering. It is through practice that you elevate your problem-solving capabilities. Not only will you improve your skill at one subject, but your general problem-solving muscles get strengthened as well.
Learn self-defense. Get armed, if practical. Be ready to protect yourself and others. Liberals will not save us, we must save each other.
Be persistent. If you feel like a single water droplet against a mountain, think of canyons and valleys. Oh, how our efforts pile up! With consistency, every rock, boulder, even mountain, can be drilled through with nothing but steady and persistent water droplets.

To be honest, I'm not in the best financial situation right now and I just don't have the strength to explain everything in more detail. And I know that in reality everything can go a little differently and here you need to constantly follow important news in order to make more detailed forecasts.

For example, there is a global energy crisis in the world right now, and there is a solution to it, but it is not beneficial to certain people, so I prefer to expect the worst. I'm not sure I'll find any evidence, but you can try it yourself and maybe you'll find something, so to speak, you'll have to look between the lines.

Energy is a problem, yes, but it's one where solar is now becoming the cheapest form of energy, and nuclear energy is advancing rapidly. Countries like the PRC have made it a clear and important goal to resolve. Countries like the US Empire that desire oil use for their own profits are still forced to cave to this trend, electric cars are becoming more prevalent and solar is expanding.

I don't expect you to explain everything in detail, but I do think you've dug yourself into conspiracy theory doomerism and that's taking up a lot of your mental energy and attitude.

In fact, I learned about the energy crisis and how serious it is from a scientist who said that he has been trying to solve this problem for several decades and not alone, because the solution to the problem exists, but there are people at the top who are afraid of losing power.

I agree with you on everything except one aspect: money is power and control in this system. Abstract authority is meaningless and most of those who seem to have only this are pieces to be moved when appropriate, but the moving is done with money. That's where the real power is nowadays.

As it were, money can't buy happiness, but it sure can make it a lot easier to compensate for the sadness.

Yes, correct, money is power in capitalism. However, power is only sought as a means to aquire more money. Power that undermines ones own profits, such as what OP describes in their other post (that they linked), is not realistic and teeters more into conspiracy theory territory.

By determining how the base mode of production prioritizes them. It doesn't matter what an individual prefers, ie we could say Musk as an individual seeks power, but in doing so has to satisfy the laws of capitalism and achieve higher and higher profits to maintain it. Musk isn't primary, the system he has to abide by is. Capitalists aren't the masters of capitalism, as Roderic Day says they are the high priests of capital that best abide its laws, ie the pursuit of profit.

No, they aren't "harmless" either. It isn't about "getting a high score." Capitalism is based on profits and selects for those that are most profitable, there's no such thing as an "ethical capitalism" because even if a capitalist decided individually to stop pursuing profits above all else, others would overtake them and the "ethical" capitalist would go under.

Of course there's no ethical capitalist, nor are capitalists arithmomaniacs obsessed with gaining money the sake of gaining money. Money is an expression of power, money itself is not the goal it's the power.

Capitalism is a material, existing system that does not care about power. All it cares about is whoever best achieves profits in the system. As there is a tendency for the rate of profit to fall, absolute profits must be raised by rapid and continuous expansion. Power is merely a tool for that purpose, a capitalist that doesn't manipulate the state to its own ends, etc fails to outcompete. In capitalism, even if the action is abhorant, if it's profitable, it will be done.

By putting notions of power above profit, you utterly confuse the driving aspect of economies based on circulation of commodities and reproduction on an expanded scale, ie capitalism. It doesn't matter if the capitalists has everything they want as an individual, if they choose to stop pursuing profits, they sink and new capitalists that are willing to continue will take their place, because capitalists are a class, and not just a group of individuals alone.

Said it yourself, "power [is a] means to acquire more money." And the way society has been structured means we, the workers and consumers, are the product - we are the money (arguably always have been).

As such, it honestly makes sense to establish more and more layers of control, not only as a means of reinforcing and securing their positions (it's harder to fight against Fascism if you can't even call it Fascism, for instance), but also to wrangle the cattle, as it were.

I mean, if you'd be making your money off of rearing cows, you wouldn't want them rebelling in any way. Complicates the road to profit.

Control can help facilitate making more money, but not always. Slavery was horribly inefficient for industrial work, for example, so the industrialists in the Statesian north went to war with the slaver agriculturalists in the south to expand the supply of wage laborers. Wage laborers are under less direct control, but are more willing to do complicated work, as they don't have an assured existence.

Power is the means to the end, the end being profit. It isn't the other way around.

Well, what I was saying is that power is intrinsic to money, any way you cut it. Whether it be through using power to acquire money, or using money as a power in itself - money can make anything move, if that's not power, then what is?

As for the aspect of control, yes, those outdated methods were ineffective, but they've had plenty of time to perfect their expression of control since then. I mean, if the people in power owning the means of distributing information and facilitating communication between people isn't control, then what is?

I understand and agree with that, but that's exactly my point, that control is a means to an end, but control needs to be sustained and perfected over time, and it is also necessary when a handful of psychotic apes are making their profits off of other 8.2 billion psychotic apes.

Yes, the ultimate goal is money. Yes, control is a means to an end. But you also have to take into consideration the way we've structured things to work so far, how we've built society, basically. It's layers upon layers of influence and control, even down to basic human interactions most of the time. I'm not saying non-transactional interactions are impossible, but in a transactional system, transactional interactions are favoured. And, yes, the system itself is transactional because it is focused and built around the central and supreme value (in its conception, not objectively, to note) - money.

We have built a system of control centered around money, is my point. Because that was the most effective way to ensure stability of profit. And it is much easier and much stabler to ensure the (upward) flow of money if one controls/influences/manipulates those who actually generate the money.

I don't disagree, my problem was with people suggesting control was the end, not profit. Control is a tool purely to help gain more profit, it isn't the goal.

As a side-note, I do think it's worth understanding that there are socialist countries where control is flipped, political power is dominated by the working class against capitalists. We know socialism works, we know capitalism is dying.

Oh, nonono! Control is just the most effective and mass-deployed tool, not the end! Completely agree with that aspect!

And agreed as well in that the pyramid of control should be flipped, with the people who actually generate value (i.e. the workers) at the top! It would make sense not only from an equity standpoint, but in terms of expertise as well! I find practical experience with a process is an absolute must for anyone who is tasked with managing said process, if we desire efficient (and actually useful...) management!

Glad we could agree! Really, one of the bright sides of capitalism's later stages is that it already prepares the way for socialism. Capitalism cannot help but centralize, developing the tools and processes needed for production at huge scales, but this same development also makes it much easier to plan production and move beyond production for profit. As capital concentrates in fewer and fewer hands, the working class grows, and is already trained to run production ourselves. The longer this goes on, the more we outnumber capitalists.

Countries like the PRC, Cuba, etc have already shown that socialism works very well for satisfying the needs of people, and presents a way out. As imperialism is falling with the US Empire, so is the biggest obstacle to socialism globally. There's good reason to be hopeful for the future, it will just take organizing and serious dedication to building a better world.

No, this is wrong. Capitalism is a control system that selects for those capitalists that obtain the most profits. It isn't about pursuit of power at the top, if you cease seeking profits you are overtaken by other capitalists. There's no desire for power for power's sake, power is a tool and its purpose is higher profits, not the other way around. Capitalism is driven by profit, not power.

Well said. The key point is that our goal must be to deliver tangible improvements to people's everyday material conditions. Chasing some abstract, Platonic ideal of a perfect society is a pointless exercise. It's also unrealistic to expect any human society to become a Utopia.

Instead, we should focus on maximizing personal agency. That means accomplishing concrete things like reducing work hours, guaranteeing access to basic necessities, and providing public spaces like parks, libraries, and sports centers.

The goal isn't to have some nebulous "freedoms" promoted in the West. It's about ensuring that our collective labour and resources are directed toward raising the standard of living for everyone. And that process can only begin with the collective ownership of the means of production.

Exactly, human societies are dynamic systems and we have to analyze them as such. We have to look at the selection pressures the rules of the system create, and interpret human behavior within the context of these rules. When we see that the rules create perverse incentives, we have the power to change the social contract.

Understanding how and why the system works is one of the best antidotes to doomerism, hence why we incessantly tell people to read theory. Once you understand why things work a certain way, and the mechanics that drive the evolution of the system then it no longer feels like a force of nature. It's a machine that we've constructed, and it operates because we collectively allow it to.

Virtually every British Jewish community representative organization claims to support a two-state solution between Israelis and Palestinians.

There is also cross-party consensus in the British parliament that this is the most viable solution. Yesterday, the British government finally took a step towards making this policy a reality by recognizing a Palestinian state, with clear conditions that ensure Israel's security, including the disarmament of Hamas and working to free the hostages the group still holds in Gaza.

So, on paper, the U.K.'s announcement should be welcomed by all those who claim to support a two-state solution, including the mainstream British Jewish community. And yet instead, it's been met at worst with criticism and condemnations, and at best with silence, perhaps out of fear of being ostracized.

Surely, this Israeli government, one that threatens to occupy and remove Palestinians from Gaza, and one that has already killed tens of thousands and starved hundreds of thousands, isn't reflective of our community and its values. So where is our British Jewish leadership, coming forward to commend Prime Minister Starmer for taking the step we all know is right?

what's a good phone?

Hey there! i currently have a Samsung Galaxy A55 and i want to try one of the privacy focused phones. But idk which is the best i could try.

My findings:
- Fairphone with /e/OS, but ive heard /e/OS is apparantly not that secure.
- Google Pixel with GrapheneOS, but with this one I still need to buy from Google.
- Linux phones, but I'm concerend they dont support all the apps i want to use.

that being said, can you use MicroG instead of Google Services for ALL apps? or does it only work for things like Revanced?

Recommendations for audio production software?

I have literally zero experience with creating audio, but I want to try something new for me.

I know most people who are "properly" into music production are just using a Mac, because it just works and where a lot of the software is available.

Thing is, I have zero expectations.
I don't need a lot of features, plug-ins, and whatever. Most stuff will probably just be fine for me.

Heck, I don't even know what I need in the first place to get a full "stack" of audio production software.

For the start, I'd prefer something simple.
Mostly just something where I can arrange a few recorded audio tracks onto each other and maybe edit them a bit.
Something where I can record the tracks with my microphone (and some time later maybe an input device like a piano keyboard, e-guitar, etc.) and listen them at the same time, preferably in the same program.

What are your experiences with making music on Linux?
What software would you recommend?

For a simpler program look into Tenacity (Audacity fork) and if you want something bigger I know many use Reaper nowadays (available for Linux, Windows and Mac)

Software wise, ProTools is what nearly everyone in the industry uses. Its been around forever. It enjoys a massive monopoly share of the market. But I don't think it works on Linux. Mac n PC only.

For a cheaper Linux friendly option, consider Fairlight (the audio component of Black magic Resolve).

The name "Fairlight" has also been around forever, but was defunct for a while, and a handful of years ago the fine folks at Blackmagic Design bought the brand and IP integrated into their Resolve software. While Resolve has a free tier that includes Fairlight, some might require the Studio version which is a one time fee of ~US$300 and includes all future updates. I've heard some Pros speak highly of the new Fairlight. Can't vouch for it myself but the mantra of the Blackmagic CEO is "we build the tools we wanted when we were working creatives."

Doubling down on Reaper: I’ve tried other DAWs before, but none of them ever felt as natural to me as Reaper. I wouldn’t recommend the Flatpak version, though—I could never get it to work with plugins, although that might just be me. On Linux, you can simply download the install script from the website, which makes installing and uninstalling Reaper just as easy.

I gave in and gave them my money; I like their software.

I'm not an audio pro though so I'm really only comparing it to FL studio and Ableton, neither of which get my money

I'd try some of the Multimedia / Audio Linux distributions. I believe there are some which have everything set up for you and you can just try and explore. Notably Ubuntu Studio, AV Linux

Other than that, LMMS and Ardour, Qtractor, ZRhythm, Rosegarden, MuSE, or Mixxx for DJing... There's generally a lot. DAWs, trackers, sequencers, synthesizers... you can do professional multitrack recording or just mess with your guitar or sample some electronic music...

It's a bit difficult as a beginner, since there are a lot of options and they all have different user interfaces and you might need to learn a few concepts first. And /or read the documentation or watch some Youtube tutorials.

You essentially have 3 options with open source audio apps (there are some good closed source options too, like the great Reaper, Tracktion Waveform, and BitWig Studio, but I will focus on foss solutions here):

Ardour. This is the premier foss app. In fact, a fork of it is closed source used by a big audio manufacturer. So it's the best tested foss audio software out there. It can do both midi and recording sessions, but it's best for recording stuff. However, the new version, expected by end of this year, will have major midi updates that probably will put it on top of the king of midi in foss:
LMMS. Best for Midi. If you're doing electronic music through and through, this works great. The only downside it has it does not support vst3 plugins (soon enough, this can become an issue, even if you say that you don't care about plugins). You can still get vst3 support by loading them via the Clara plugin (basically, it acts as a plugin for other plugins), but that can be unstable.
QTractor. This one is an odd one out. It's a bit hard to get it going (it requires external synths and some patchwork to connect audio devices), but it is very powerful and I'd say, a more sane UI when editing. It comes with no plugins at all, but it supports all plugin standards for linux. Basically, this one requires more setup, but once you set it up, it gets going easier.

Alternatively, if you're actually interested only in rec. audio editing (basically cutting, pasting etc), simple stuff, there's Audacity.

If you're using Ubuntu or Linux Mint, Zorin, PopOS, install the ubuntustudio package for pipewire (can't remember how it's called you need to search for it). It sets up pipewire audio correctly, so more plugins/apps work out of the box (without it, for example, Bitwig studio doesn't even make a peep...).

Bitwig-fanboy here. This application is insane. Instead of collecting or worse, buying, random VSTs, instruments and samples you can one stop buy Bitwig, download the free packs and have 99% of everything you'll ever need to make music until you die. Plus you can modulate all parameters everywhere, but this already is more advanced stuff. If I had to pick one piece of software to use for the rest of my life, it'd be Bitwig. It's on sale twice a year, watch out fi dis.

I'm a voice actor and musician, and moved to Linux about a month and a half ago with Ubuntu Studio. I went from using Adobe Audition and Cubase to Reaper and Bitwig, and highly recommend both. Reaper is WAY more powerful than I realized. For FOSS you could try Ardour, I've heard good things. Personally I hated it haha, but that may just be because I tried Ardour first after switching to Linux and had the learning curve of both a new OS/audio setup and a new DAW at the same time with a project due day-of.

The biggest issues I had was just getting audio to work properly. I was stuck using ALSA for a few weeks, which worked but only allows one program to use audio at once. I very much recommend looking into using JACK and setting up pipewire.

You can absolutely start just recording via mic and editing from there. If you want to hook up instruments, check out midi controllers. Some plugins are extremely helpful for creating a more polished sound like eq, compressors, limiters, etc. If the space you're recording in doesn't have the best sound treatment, Reaper has a great noise reduction plugin called ReaFIR. It's a little more aggressive than I like but works really well (feel free to ask me how to use it if you're having problems).

My recommendation is to start with Reaper (it's got a free trial that you can keep using beyond the end date) and get your hardware working. After that, record a few tracks, throw them together into your DAW of choice, and play around with them.

You want Reaper. It's a $60 program but you can keep it in trial mode for as long as you want till you've got the money. Reaper has lots of tutorials available on YouTube and can use industry-standard VST plugins, plus it has enough plugins bundled in to get you started.

What he said. Plus: I've been using Ardour for years. Then I tried Reaper, "evaluated" for about 3 months, then decided to pay the ~ 70€. You get a licence for the existing and a future release. It feels much more "natural" to me than Ardour.

Yeah, exactly. I was trained on Pro Tools and Ardour worked OK and made sense to me, but Reaper feels more intuitive to use than either Pro Tools or Ardour.

I agree with what others have said about using reaper. It really is a great DAW.

That said, a lot of good vst use stuff like ilok or other crap that makes it impossible or very difficult to use on Linux at least in my experience.

I made a windows box specifically for making music because its just way easier. Making music on Linux sucked for me due to crashing and the plugins I bought before I switched to Linux on my main machine.

Reaper should be fine for you, there are plenty of good Linux compatible VST but if you ever get "serious" about music production, Linux isnt quite there yet IMO. Windows would be my recommendation or if you can afford it, a Mac is good too from what ive heard.

I have been on the same quest. I have used Ableton on mac/windows and I’m eyeing Bitwig. I tried Ardour for a little bit, but never gelled with it. Ardour would probably be fine if I did some effort on learning the interface, but I didnt find it that intuitive.

Pidgin 3.0 Experimental 4 (2.93.0) has been released!

We are ecstatic to announce that we have released the fourth experimental version of Pidgin 3.0!!! This is a pre alpha release with an official version number of 2.93.0. We will continue releasing in this fashion until we are ready for 3.0.0 which will be the release we consider ready for end users.

The release can be found on SourceForge and should show up on Flathub Beta shortly.

If you don’t want to use the Flathub Beta method, there are build instructions in the README for building a flatpak locally or installing into a meson devenv. Both methods avoid installing directly to your OS installation which is the preferred method as there is no easy way to uninstall.

About

Just like the previous experimental releases, this is a timed release. It is a snapshot of what we currently have and is something we think other tinkerers and developers may want to start playing with, but again, it is not meant for end users.

Most things are not implemented, the user interface has not been polished at all, and there are so so many bugs. As such we are asking that packagers please do not package this for your users yet as the potential support requests will be too much for us to handle at this time.

There's a number of things that unfortunately went unfinished for this release so you may notice more bugs than previous experimental releases. But like usual, there's still been plenty of progress for everyone to check out!

Looking forward, Experimental 5 is scheduled for 2025-12-31 and will have a version number of 2.94.0.

We have a bunch of tickets entered for Experimental 5, and you can keep an eye on the Burndown Chart for Experimental 5 to stay informed. As always, priorities and possibilities can and will change, so even if something is listed for this release that doesn’t mean it will be in the release until it’s actually completed.

Developer Migration Guide

We have started the huge task of describing how to migrate code from Purple 2 to Purple 3. That document is available at docs.imfreedom.org/purple3/migrating.html.

This is for migration only. We're still looking at doing some sort of compatibility layer, but we don't want to put a lot of time into that until we're much more confident in the APIs not changing. We are also looking to do an architecture document as well that will explain some of the finer details of the APIs.

Backends

Many of our data sources need to be persisted when the program isn't running. We've done this a number of ways over the years, but in this release we have created a new pattern of using backends to abstract this out.

For example, a user interface can tell Purple.ConversationManager to not persist conversations or to persist them in a SQLite database using Purple.ConversationManagerSeagullBackend. Many more of these will be popping up in the future for the other managers.

Conversation Persistence

As mentioned above Purple now keeps track of your open conversations assuming the conversation manager was told to use a backend that persists data which Pidgin does by default.

This means you no longer have to add a channel to your contact list and tell it to auto join, it will just automatically happen for all conversations (dms, group dms, channel, etc) that were still open when you closed the program which matches the behavior of many modern clients.

New Application Icon

The one and only Hykle Bons has come out of retirement to create a new application icon for Pidgin 3 which you can see below. If you have any comments regarding it, there is a post for that over here.

Color Scheme Preference

You can finally chose to have Pidgin follow the system theme or force it into light or dark mode!

I think this is happening to sharks too. Its not an "invasion", these animals habitats are being destroyed. They are looking for food. We are invading them. Climate change, netting and other mass food gathering methods destroying their reefs and other biomes.

i used to have one of these and it was the first time i went with linux fulltime.

i was an employee of fry's electronics so i got a discount with it as well. lol

EDIT: mine didn't come with speakers, but that keyboard made me feel nostalgic. and speaking of penny pinching: fry's never updated their sales/inventory system past msdos 6.22

df showing a full (99%) ssd, but du only showing a fraction of that? UPDATED

I noticed the root drive of my home server (Debian) is at 99% capacity, which was odd to be because I don't store anything on the root ssd. sudo df -h confirms that 99% of my 256gb drive is full. But sudo du -sh * all added up, only comes to about 30gb.

This is a pc that only runs docker containers and one virtual machine for home assistant. And yes I have restarted, Any ideas as to how to find the missing 200+ gigabytes?

EDIT: sudo ncdu allowed me to find a 72gb [long string of characterless]-json.log file in /var/lib/docker/containers and many 1gb+ files in /var/lib/docker/overlay2. I'm not sure what to do with this information (or what's safe to delete) but I'm getting somewhere.

Where are you running du -sh *? (I.e. what directory, are you definitely scanning the whole file system?) I'm sure it's obvious, but can never hurt to check!

What does du -sh / show? (Generally, the * glob pattern in the shell will not match hidden dot-files, so is it possible they are being excluded?)

EDIT sudo ncdu allowed me to find a 72gb [long string of characterless]-json.log file in /var/lib/docker/containers and many 1gb+ files in /var/lib/docker/overlay2. I'm not sure what to do with this information (or what's safe to delete) but I'm getting somewhere.

~~sudo du -sh / shows a list of three du: cannot access '/run/user/1000/gvfs' Permission denied and du: cannot access No such file or directory and a few cannot read directory invalid argument and at the end it shows 5.4T / which I assume is my root drive combined with what's in mnt.~~
