What explains the depressing job market — most starkly illustrated in a viral chart on X, based on data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, showing the number of position openings cratering since ChatGPT was released? And what about early career jobs, which seem scarce these days, to the chagrin of recent graduates? Some think that the softening in the job market should instead be attributed to the US Federal Reserve putting a kibosh to the era of zero interest-rate policy in 2022. Before it ended, companies borrowed massive amounts of capital at cheap rates and plowed them into high-risk startups — thereby inflating assets, making lots of millionaires, and fueling a gold rush of well-paying tech positions. (Squint at that chart in the previous paragraph and it does seem to support this thesis, with the decline in openings coinciding more cleanly with the interest rate hike than the release of ChatGPT.)
As for early career positions decreasing, some experts think the phenomenon predates ChatGPT and could be a sign that there are simply more college graduates than there are early career jobs where a higher degree is a must, along with other structural changes.
And there are the headlines, which are littered with stories of people getting laid off due to AI — but maybe that’s a function of some CEOs jumping the gun and buying into the hype even though AI still leaves much to be desired in practice. That’s reflected in the uneven adoption of AI across industrial sectors.
While generative AI looks likely to join the ranks of transformative, general purpose technologies,” the Yale study reads, “It is too soon to tell how disruptive the technology will be to jobs.
anyone with 1/4 of a brain knows this.
but the vast majority of the population, including our leadership, are mostly brainless hype drunk monkeys.

That is basically a list of, does your work require your body of not.
But I basically agree with the list, at least for a few more years. I expect robotics to quickly get better and start replacing some of the jobs on the left of the list.
Surprisingly, they found that the rate of change in the labor market’s makeup in the wake of AI closely matches the pace when computers and the internet were first taking off. In other words, AI doesn’t appear to be more disruptive than those two technologies
Possibly two of the most disruptive technologies in the last 100 years. Who writes this shit?
Hacker group Black Mirror releases first batch of Rostec files detailing Russia’s international military deals and sanctions evasion schemes
The hacker collective Black Mirror has released the first portion of an archive of documents from the Russian state defense corporation Rostec. The tranche contains more than 300 items. The materials detail Russia’s military and technical cooperation with foreign clients, pricing for military items, and logistics schemes aimed at evading sanctions. The published documents also include internal correspondence, presentations on overseas helicopter service centers, and agreements with international partners.
The files show that Russian companies have faced difficulties receiving payments for contracts with Algeria, Egypt, China, and India. Russian banks have been unable to issue guarantees or conduct transactions through the SWIFT system, forcing them to search for alternative settlement schemes in yuan, rubles, and euros.
The archive also contains information about an international network of service centers for Russian helicopter equipment. The documents describe existing and planned maintenance facilities in the UAE, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, and other countries. Particular attention is paid to the creation of an international regional logistics hub in Dubai, near Al Maktoum Airport, designed as a central node for supplying spare parts and components.
Among the materials is a letter from the Rostec holding company Concern Radio-Electronic Technologies (CRET) on pricing for military products in export contracts. The document proposes a simplified formula for setting wholesale prices, profit margins, transport expenses, and currency risks. It also discusses possible legal changes to allow more flexible use of revenues from military-technical cooperation.
The hackers said this is only the first portion of the Rostec archive, which they are releasing in what they called “fuck off exposure” mode. Black Mirror claims the documents include a list of “reliable trading partners” in several countries.

Spanish prosecutor closes investigation into major manufacturer Maxam, whose Russian plants continue producing explosives despite EU ban
cross-posted from: lemmy.sdf.org/post/43400129
ArchivedSpain’s public prosecutor has closed a pretrial investigation into MaxamCorp International S.L. that was opened after a report by The Insider exposed the company’s Russian factories, which continue to produce explosives despite Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Russian antiwar activists living in Spain filed a complaint that prompted the probe in June. Three months later, the prosecutor at Spain’s National Court dropped the investigation, despite the factories not halting their operations.
[...]
In the decision declining to press charges [...] the prosecutor, without citing specific sources, said Maxam did not export explosive substances to Russia in 2024-2025 and that in 2024 the company lost control of its Russian subsidiaries.
The Insider asked an independent sanctions-compliance lawyer to comment on the prosecutor’s ruling.
Alex Prezanti, [an independent sanctions-compliance lawyer and] co-executive director of the nonprofit State Capture Accountability Project (SCAP), said the prosecutor examined the evidence selectively:
“In his decision to close the investigation against Maxam International, the Spanish prosecutor appears to have only examined events in 2024-2025 — once Maxam had lost control of its Russian subsidiaries. However, the complaint and the Insider's reporting also allege that Maxam International provided its Russian subsidiaries with materials and intellectual property for the production of explosives between 2022 and 2023.The reporting also alleges that in 2023, Maxam appears to have accepted dividends on profits accrued by its subsidiaries in Russia from a direct supplier to the Russian military industrial complex. It is therefore unfortunate, in my opinion, that the Spanish prosecutor omitted the events of 2022-2023 from his examination. Whilst I have not seen enough evidence to conclude whether there was criminal conduct, on the face of it these allegations would justify a full investigation to determine whether Maxam International broke the law during the first two years of Russia's full scale invasion.”
[...]
Maxam has operated in Russia since 1999 through four subsidiaries: the management company Maxam Rusia LLC ((ООО «Максам Русия»), along with three explosives plants — “High-Tech Initiation Systems” JSC (AO “VSI”) in the Samara Region, “Eastern Mining Services” LLC (ООО «ИМС») in the northern Murmansk Region, and YUII-Sibir LLC (ООО «ЮИИ-Сибирь») in Krasnoyarsk Krai in central Siberia. The ultimate owner of those firms was Spain’s MaxamCorp International S.L.
All three production sites continued operating after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Delusions of a Protocol
So, if you're online poisoned like me, you may have noticed that Bluesky CEO Jay Graber has been having sort of a slow motion, low-key public meltdown for the past several weeks. Most recently, in this interaction with a user.
[…]
Even with practical technical decentralization, the vast majority of Bluesky users are on, well, Bluesky. Bluesky was never really packaged as something that was relatively easy for someone to spin up on their own servers; the network has been historically extremely centralized, and only small minorities of users have broken off.AT Proto decentralization doesn't exist as a practical reality, and if it ever does it won't be for years. Most of the work driving effective decentralization is being done by third parties, who have limited guarantees about future compatibility with possible breaking changes on Bluesky's end.
Bluesky inc isn't really making 'a protocol', they're making Bluesky, the monolithic (to within a rounding error) social network that they operate.
I do genuinely believe that the Bluesky team set off from the start to create a decentralized protocol, but unfortunately for them they ended up running a social network. And at this point, AT Proto has become essentially a sort of ideological vaporware; a way for Jay Graber et al to run a social media platform while claiming they don't run a social media platform.
This is, of course, just another iteration of the Silicon Valley monoproduct: power without accountability. The tech industry elite are very much like Gilded Age railroad barons – buying up whole towns, breaking up strikes, imposing top-down economic policy on whole sectors – except all the while they claim that they are just technology enthusiasts playing with their little trains.
Bluesky is of course just another American social media company. If they are not shit now, they will be once they get bigger. The American model has reached a dead end and it's not suitable for good products, competition and real innovation.
Side note, it's been a while since I've lived in the US, so my knowledge of local "culture wars" is from online sources, but the article is incorrect in claiming that Jesse Singal is a transphobe. I say this as someone who often disagrees with him.
I will add that many of the commentators in his substack are unhinged and likely transphobes.
Legal scholar John Inazu characterized the backlash as "widespread outrage from progressive commentators" and that in some criticisms, "ad hominem attacks far outpaced their substantive critiques".[13]
US americans are largely the same, be it trumpers or self styled liberals, they always have to be "better than" or "the best" of something. This leads to dangerous orthodoxies that don't allow debate or discussion which furter leads to stances that are nothing but distilled anti-intellectualism. The trumpers call everything woke, the liberals call everything phobe. Meanwhile the overton window has moved so far to the right, the country elected a pedophile scam artist as president because they know him from TV and the rest of the world is left holding the bag.
There is a bunch of normalized transphobia in America. That certain views are shared by elected politicians doesn't make them not transphobic.
"Trans allies aren't even bothering to debate this white guy, they're just calling him names" isn't proof of anything more than the frustration of said allies. It's essentially the same thing as "Trump derangement syndrome".
If we want to argue that someone is or isn't transphobic, it would be a better use of everyone's time to focus on what they actually said and what justifications their critics give for applying that label.
Your reply is a nice example of the "phobes" point I had previously mentioned.
Wonderful job you've done protecting trans people in your country, the results really show.
The transphobes are getting ready to take away my healthcare, I think I have to be very worried about that.
If I can't get my medicine I will die.
And they use the threat of trans people getting government healthcare as a way to stop socialized medicine. They also use racism this way, and sexism, and homophobia, and xenophobia, and other reactionary ideologies. These things are directly connected, we can't really ignore one to focus on the other.
Besides, we need to form a mass movement, and you can't form a mass movement by telling minorities to shut up and wait their turn.
Also I might lose my healthcare in the next few months. It's kind of fucking urgent?
This is complicated by the fact that the English speaking world isn't safe, or won't be for long. The UK is having its own wave of transphobic reaction which has spread to Ireland, Canada is being threatened with a trade war and being the 51st state, Australia got couped that one time by the CIA, and New Zealand is a hard place to get into since it's basically the bunker nation for billionaires since COVID.
I might apply for asylum outside the English speaking world but that's extremely challenging in lots of other ways. I'm cramming language lessons atm to give myself a chance if I am forced to flee, but it's dire.
By "association rights" I infer that you mean the right of free association.
If so, can you be a little bit more specific as to whose "association rights", specifically, are a more important issue than the right of trans folk to get healthcare, be free from discrimination, and be able to play sports without being harassed?
My inclination is that the most important targets to defend against facist oppression are the ones being targeted, which does suggest one plausible answer, but I really do want to know what you meant in your post.
IMHO, the US has bigger fish to fry than transphobia
Yes. That's why the politicians keep talking about trans people. They are explicitly stirring up transphopbia as a simultaneous distraction and unification tool
he liberals call everything phobe.
Literally the only reason you're even talking about this yourself is because of the neonazis. You're literally doing their work, whilst somehow thinking you're immune to it...
It‘s perhaps worth noting that the first people the Nazis came for was LGBTQ people. If you‘ve seen photos of Nazi book-burnings, there‘s a high percentage chance that what you‘ve seen is the first book-burning, because the vast majority of photos are from one event. The books being burnt at that event was research from an organisation called Institut für Sexualwissenschaft (the Institute of Sexual Science), which was founded by a gay activist and focused mainly on LGBTQ research and care - including gender-affirming surgery. The Nazis very deliberately tried to wipe out this research and acknowledgement that trans people existed.
If you don‘t care about the current attacks on trans people in and of itself, it should trouble you as a canary in a coal mine. The famous poem‘s first line should be „first they came for the trans people“, rather than „first they came for the Socialists“. Don‘t do the „and I did nothing because I wasn‘t trans“ thing.
It all matters, even if your concern is purely for yourself.
Leave it to amis to grandstand while missing the point...
I strongly disagree. Even the section on his articles about trans kids shows that Singal is able to show a measure of nuance and understanding with respect to the critiques of his work.
Not to mention the more global context. Are you sure that non-english speaking trans folks would have the same attitude (i.e. they may have their own opinions and priorities)? The reason I mention this is that I have some exposure to the local LGBT community and their attitudes don't always align with "Western" expectations.
I can see how the AT protocol is designed to scale. ActivityPub works fine now because the community is fairly small, but it will reach its limits as it is currently designed. Its basically an event driven model vs a push and pull model. Sure a docker image can more or less jusy be deployed, but that simplicity is a ticking time bomb.
Running a relay is way more powerful than the author states though. You could do stuff like selectivly intercept and reject events before they make it into or out of the firehose.
ActivityPub works fine now because the community is fairly small, but it will reach its limits as it is currently designed. Its basically an event driven model vs a push and pull model. Sure a docker image can more or less jusy be deployed, but that simplicity is a ticking time bomb.
You mean that when there's more traffic, the instances will start to DDOS each other?
Yeah i guess you could look at it that way. Each instance would have to scale horizontally to handle the load, which is waste.
I could be wrong, but my understanding is that ActivityPub is just a rest api contract that one can implement in order to communicate with the rest of the "network". Its simple, but its such massive overhead to do this all via http. Pushing all your instances events to a dedicated stream and letting the other instnaces read it can be more performant and handle the load better. The downside though is who controls the streams?
IRC is the OG of federation, i am sure we could learn something from it and have federated networks that are in turn federated with eachother. I dunno, just thinking out loud here.
But is that a limitation of AP?
As far as I understand one could split a fediverse instance into three parts: data, backend and UI.
The data is not shared 1to1 - each instance gets a copy of the activity and from that creates it's own copy. Hence the same post on different instances will have different id
The problem we are speaking about is the capability of the backend to process incoming copies. Meaning, I also understand that the part that serves the local data to UI should not be the problem
What if there was a queue at the front and from the backend a scalable ingestion worker would be split off? Those would only do the putting the actions onto the data. Probably with per community(?) FIFO topics/partitions, so we can process data in parallel and not worry about an updoot for a post that does not exist yet
Those would still be fairly easy to deploy and be vertically scalable, right?
Or is there some bottleneck in the protocol itself?
So lets say there are 100 instances. My instance needs to issue api requests to each instance to sync with the network. They in turn need to issues 100 requests to me to sync (and eachother). What about when there are 100k instances? Its exponential.
From the looks of AT, its farily linear because its really just operating on a set of giant event streams (like kafka).
To me, ActivityPub being based on REST APIs was always a problem. On the upside it makes it approachable, but its not really the right tech imo. Use something without the overhead of http headers and whatnot.
From the looks of AT, its farily linear because its really just operating on a set of giant event streams (like kafka).
Wouldn't that mean that this stream will have to scale horizontally?
With AP does the exchange have to be http requests? If every instance had a stream instead, would that break the protocol?
With decentralized AT, who would be maintaining the stream? On the image I don't see a connection between the alternative firehose and right-side pds'
So lets say there are 100 instances. My instance needs to issue api requests to each instance to sync with the network. They in turn need to issues 100 requests to me to sync (and eachother). What about when there are 100k instances? Its exponential.
This falsely assumes that everything gets federated to everyone, which isn't the case for ActivityPub. You only get what you actually subscribe to with it.
i ddos my wordpress-activitypub-enabled website every time i boost a post made from there to my 10k followers. tried every single caching plugin for it as well.
activitypub scaling is a very real issue
It gets DDOSed because after the boost, all the subscribers' instances are calling it to retrieve the content?
Do you think a load balancer might help?
ActivityPub is designed to scale well for millions of users with a low number of subscribers each (Dunbars number and so on). It is not designed as a mass media publishing tool where a few have tens of thousands or even millions of followers.
I consider this a feature, but feel free to disagree.
This depends on what you think the purpose of ActivityPub is and subsequently the type of scale. ActivityPub is designed for horizontal scale in a "social network". If you have lots of participating entities with a more or less similar number of interconnected subscriptions ActivityPub scales extremely well, unlike ATProto, which needs to more or less ingest the entire network in its firehose.
But you are right that ATProto is better designed for "social media", meaning that most subscriptions are one sided affairs with highly visible "influencers" being the main point around which the network operates. Obviously this is what most commercial networks are more interested in as it allows profitable advertisement and other forms of social influence.
I see these two types as entirely different forms of social interaction, and couldn't care less about the latter. So I am not worried at all about scaling issues of ActivityPub, as it scales extremely well in the "social network" type of interaction.
Is that really true though? Say we end up with 10k servers with 100-1000 users each, even if only 10% of those users have a connection to a server that no one rose on their server is connected to, that's still a highly connected network.
Then add boosts from other servers (that incentivise cross-network follows)...
I don't believe that's true.. It currently has around 9k servers, but I think the vast majority of those will have less than 10 users.
Anyway, there's currently about 1m active users, so the real question is will it scale by 3 orders of magnitude? And my point being that I'd expect the network to become more connected as it scales (at least for the main archipelago, which is probably always going to house a majority of users).
MAU is a very incomplete measure of active users as by far the most users lurk and post very little.
In total numbers Mastodon has about 10m users and only 30% of those are on mastodon.social, the rest is distributed on the 9k other instances. That's pretty close to the scenario you stated.
When are they going to learn?
Probably never.
Dipshits like this are going to be stupid for the rest of their lives.
I feel like many people who went to Bluesky were desperate for it to work and grow, rather than necessarily believing it would work and grow and in some cases - weren't even people who the Twitter style even appealed to. They just went there to try and do a bit of damage to Twitter. This is likely why its now slowly losing activity.
I signed up to Bluesky not too long after it surged. And I made a few comments, but quickly just... didn't have anything say. It's just a "shout into the ether" site like Twitter - but smaller, and no nazis. That's a good thing in itself, but in an ideal world I would never really use it.

Unfalsifiable conjecture. Contradicts everything the people involved say themselves. Including transparently good actors like some of the board members.
Assumes bad faith, basically. Which ironically is one of the founding ills of social media.
This does raise a question relevant to the Fediverse. Some Bluesky users are lobbying to have Jesse Singal banned, whoever that is. Of course, a hallmark of a decentralized network is that there is no central authority that could actually do that. Implicitly, this demand is a rejection of the very concept of decentralization.
Once people find out what decentralization means, are they even willing to tolerate it?
Bluesky is a platform for scammers and morons.
If you're not the one scamming, that only leaves one other option.

What's the factor when you're planning to self-hosted a instance?
I am interested of self-hosting my own instance but one the issue I have is:
- Price for renting server and buying domain name. Mainly, I have low income.
- Unsure if it be single-user instance or if I want multiple people on my instance.
- If my instance is for multiple users, if I be the best fit for moderation as well, pitching it to non Fedizen (whatever you call people that use the Fediverse) as well as the theme of the instance as it would effect my Fedi software of choice (eg. Friendica, Mastodon/Glitch)
I just worried that I try just do it immediately without planning things out or have whatever things in mind which might otherwise help me know what's the best choice and not be upset that I wasted my time and money on something that didn't work out for me.

Very smart to pause and weigh things. There was a lot more to it than I thought when I started mine.
- Renting a server is not cheap, but it's not expensive either. Most VPS' will be able to host it fine. You will need to invest effort into swapping data over to S3, volume storage is what really costs money if you use it incorrectly.
- I'll say do you want to have an individual/known user instance (like family and friends you deeply trust), or do you want to allow randos? The thing you don't mention at all is liability. I don't know where you're hosted but in most countries you are responsible for reporting material on your server. CSAM? Guess what, you are responsible. You can look at my server, it's based out of the USA and any server is automatically a "mandatory reporter". I am legally obligated to report CSAM that makes it to my instance, if I don't I am legally complicit.
- Note that this has been drastically reduced with the image proxying, where if someone on say, .world posts CSAM it's proxied through my server but not hosted by my server. So, liability is still a thing, but as long as the admins of .world take action then i'm protected with them. If proxying is disabled then the CSAM would live on my server too - and that means I'm legally required to report it.
- NEVER allow open signups. Spam is real here on the fediverse, and bots are actively trying to sign up for accounts. If you allow signups you need to require a captcha, and I recommend either email verification or asking for a signup message "Why do you want to sign up?". This gets rid of 99.9% of spammers.
- This is also a huge reason for not selfhosting an instance. I started hosting mine in my home until I learned that since it's in a home, the feds seizing an instance literally means they bust down your door and take your servers. I decided that I didn't vibe with that, and opted for a hosting provider. If for some reason someone hijacks my server and starts hosting horrible stuff, the seizure will be with my cloud provider, not my front door.
My suggestion is to start a personal instance first. Get the feel for it, see how you like it. Maybe create one community on there that you're passionate about and advertise that it's there to the fediverse (since they won't know about it until you tell them about it). Then judge your risk level and see how much you're willing to do. For me, I host a bunch of swifties, it's well within my risk tolerance. I approve everyone that comes in, and most have to ask to join. (Fight the urge to just create a ton of communities. You'll just end up with dozens of empty communities, there's no way you have the effort to kickstart a lot of communities. Pick one, maybe two, and really advocate for them. Shameless plug them, there's no harm in that here).
None of this is meant to scare you off, obviously I still host and I'm glad for it. My Swiftie Community has over 1,000 subscribers now! I'm very happy to host our little niche community, but I also have learned a lot on the way.
I am not sure OP is asking about hosting a Lemmy instance though. They mention non-Lemmy fediverse software.
However I think you misunderstood how proxying works:
Note that this has been drastically reduced with the image proxying, where if someone on say, .world posts CSAM it’s proxied through my server but not hosted by my server. So, liability is still a thing, but as long as the admins of .world take action then i’m protected with them. If proxying is disabled then the CSAM would live on my server too - and that means I’m legally required to report it.
It is actually pretty much the oposite of what you describe. The image proxy in Lemmy is a user privacy feature, but it comes with the downside that the server does indeed download and temporarily stores all media that are requested through it.
It's halfway between us. Without proxying images are pushed into my server and I end up hosting them indefinitely, requiring me to manually review and remove something if it's removed on another server. (Moderation actions like that from what I understand are still not federated, although maybe that has changed in one of the last updates).
The proxy feature is a privacy feature, but for us admins it also works from a liability standpoint. If proxying is set to ProxyAllImages, it will send the image URL down to pict-rs. From there, pictr's will cache the image based on time that you set. So yes, it's stored temporarily in Pict-rs for quick retrieval, but then I time out after a day also, so if something was banned I hosted it for max a day before it was purged. It removes me manually needing to manually trace back to events that happened a month ago and wiping it from my S3. If my S3 was searched you'd find images from today, and a bunch of images of Taylor Swift.
So you're not wrong, but it switches it from "Image is pushed to my server and there indefinitely" to "Image is requested from someone on my server (very few of us) and is there at most a day"
We dont proxy on lemmy.ca yet, but I assumed thumbnails would still be stored in pictrs like usual? I thought it was just the actual image links that got proxied, and thumbnails were still dumped in like usual.
We turned on cloudflare's CSAM scanner and remove anything it flags for us.
None of this is meant to scare you off, obviously I still host and I’m glad for it.
I hadn't been too scared off and actually found your answer useful so thank you very much!
But for multiple-user instance, I was thinking of maybe having community based on just being fan of music but more leaning on pop music so sort of like your Lemmy instance if it was hosting Mastodon instead. I won't lie, it what I sort of miss Twitter just being a fanboy (minus the bigotry, bullying and just the cult-like behaviour) and just post stuff related to music I enjoyed, even if it just some random photoshoot I think looks great!
I just concern that people on Fediverse would see it as it being a pro-"worshipping celebrities" instance instead of instance that just wants to say "Love their music, it means a lot to me".
I didn't give it nearly as much thought before I started.
In terms of price, you can set a very low price for a single-user instance. Hetzner and Netcup, for example, offer very affordable VPS (these are providers I know of, but there are certainly others).
I don't see open registration as a problem either. I've had it for years, and when I get waves of spam, which is very rare, I switch to moderated mode, otherwise it remains open.
I would host software according to your preferences. I should have kept Friendica running and turned off Mastodon, but that ship has sailed for me.
For a single-user instant, it might be interesting to connect to a relay; it is important that it is moderated. Fedimins offers such a service.

I honestly doubt that russia would be trusted to supply anything for the chinese military outside of raw materials.
Also, whats a high altitude parachute? is it just one that deploys higher up? Wouldint that make the troops and stuff easier to hit?
On top of that, if russia had all this...why couldnt they take Kyiv?
After watching Is Russia Already at War With NATO?
I think it is more likely that trump is trying to goad NATO into responding more seriously to russia, and then once they do trump can condem the action and support russia against NATO.
Now russia can pull out of Ukraine without admitting defeat
Thank you for pointing-out that he could be doing that particular machiavellianism: I'd not thought of any such game.
I've been telling people for years that Trump's going to ditch NATO & back his original backer, Putin, against NATO.

He's playing a negative-sum game, same as Putin, same as mass-shooters: the intent is that NOone matter, after he's gone: he gets to be "the last word", & gets to be the "king" which presides over the destruction of the world's potential.
Zero-sum games are competitive-narcissism, but negative-sum games are competitive-nihilism-and-narcissism.. different motivation entirely.

French court to try Chinese captain of suspected Russian ‘shadow fleet’ tanker

A French court is to try the Chinese captain of a tanker from Russia's "shadow fleet" early next year after it was intercepted off France, prosecutors said Thursday, in a move seen as a message to Moscow over its efforts to skirt Western oil sanctions. The French navy on Saturday stopped the Boracay, a vessel claiming to be flagged in Benin and blacklisted by the European Union for being part of Russia's sanction-busting "shadow fleet" of ageing oil tankers, according to the public prosecutor's office in the northwestern city of Brest.

A French court will try the Chinese captain of a Russian-linked oil tanker early next year after the vessel, part of Moscow’s so-called “shadow fleet,” was intercepted off the French coast, prosecutors said Thursday.FRANCE 24
Note that they'll be tried only for refusing to comply with a police check whatever is the proper word for that. The kind of stuff you get a fine for.
Looks like more a pretext to bring that captain to France and have intelligence service talking with him than a serious crime.

Michael Foster describes how news organisations do not gel well with the original approach of either Mastodon servers or the channel.org communities. The finding of Newsmast is that this is too confusing and tech-centric for news organisations to really grasp. Instead, Newsmast is now going in the direction of apps, as “independent news publishers and campaigning organisations love the idea of having an app.”
Fuck, that is depressing. I mean, I really hope that this works for Newsmast but if people running a news organisation can't wrap their head around the fediverse, I'm not sure I'll trust them with news ... I don't know. I can't even understand what's supposed to be complicated.

After he lost in the election,
Some rando step aside and give him his conservative seat.
I'm discussing the headline, and yes I'm aware they're politicians, headlines conventionally refer to people by the most notable thing about them if they can't get away with directly naming them and people knowing who they're talking about.
"A Canadian politician" implies some borderline rando rather than the leader of a major opposition party, which is more concerning than the headline implies
Again I'm talking about the headline in isolation, not the rest of the article.
The reason it's important is that if people do read "borderline rando" rather than "leader of a significant party", there's a much greater chance they don't click and get the extra context
The headline is doing exactly that. My first reaction was "of course some asshole is, probably a conservative." And then I clued into the photo and recognized the buffoon. If I wasn't a Canadian, or didn't have the picture, or maybe wasn't good with faces, I would have scrolled by not realizing the idiot in question iis the leader of the Conservative Party.
A responsible headline would have said that. It might as well have said "A random white guy from Canada is openly spreading propaganda." I mean it's a true headline right? Not misleading at all.
The claim that the Nazis were actually socialists is an early Nazi lie - it's in the name of the party after all - to gain votes. They never changed that name, so they perpetrated that lie and never officially retracted it. They were fascist, not socialist. It's not impossible to be both, I grant you, but one does not imply the other.
Modern right-wing detractors of socialism, especially those on the far right, like to use the lie to decry socialism, all the while secretly revering a good portion of Nazi politics.
People always complain that socialism is a slippery slope into fascism
Literally noone does. It's a slippery slope to totalitarianism, but that's not the same as fascizm
They were fascist, not socialist. It’s not impossible to be both
I mean... socialism as an economic system isn't strictly incompatible with ethnic nationalism, so long as you're willing to buy into the eugenic arguments of who constitutes "real people". Once you consign a certain share of the population to the category of "property" and "pests", you can slap the framework for a socialist system on top of the nightmarish politics of mass murder.
One could argue that Germany's rapid resurgence in the wake of the Great Depression came about precisely because the reactionary movement wasn't hopelessly wedded to the libertarian laisse-faire economics. The boom that Germany enjoyed in the 1930s was absolutely the result of a radically left wing approach to centralized state-run planning. But the purpose of that surge in productivity was to invade, loot, and plunder German's immediate neighbors in a quest of European and North African re-colonization.
Modern right-wing detractors of socialism, especially those on the far right, like to use the lie to decry socialism, all the while secretly revering a good portion of Nazi politics.
What separates modern Trumpism from European fascism is this hopeless adherence to market theories of economic advancement. You can see it plainly in the government shutdown fight. Trump wants to fire millions of federal workers, under the dogged assumption that his erstwhile friends in the Tech Sector can replace them all with a fancy computer.
He's all in on the Superiority Color Wheel, but fully divested of respect for engineering, logistics, and agricultural best-practices. Say what you will about Rommel, but the man knew how to budget out a tank of gas. Trumpism is about flooding the markets with paper currency and hoping his C-level buddies in banking and tech can figure out how to do economic management better than he can.
Modern right-wing detractors of socialism, especially those on the far right, like to use the lie to decry socialism, all the while secretly revering a good portion of Nazi politics.
There's a massive logical fallacy here. The fact that someone doesn't like socialism, doesn't make them nazi.
Sure. They could just be deluged in the neoliberal free market propaganda of the current media cycle.
But they're also a crop of individuals ripe for fascist ideology. The Randian Objectivists of the 1980s were slowly and inexorably converted into the Bush Era Christian Nationalists of the War on Terror Era. The Tea Party Libertarians of the 2000s were ultimately indoctrinated into the QAnon/MAGA movement of the 2020s. Once you buy into this idea of certain classes of people being economic parasites who deserve to be disciplined or exterminated by the Invisible Hand, you're primed to accept that you can spot these people based on their race or religion or ideological affiliation.
Nazism is downstream of capitalism. Henry Ford was handing out copies of "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" in all his dealerships for a reason.
‘Why’, I asked Hitler, ‘do you call yourself a National Socialist, since your party program is the very anthesis of that commonly accredited to Socialism?’
‘Socialism’, he retorted, putting down his cup of tea, ‘is the science of dealing with the common weal [health or well-being]. Communism is not Socialism. Marxism is not Socialism. The Marxians have stolen the term and confused its meaning. I shall take Socialism away from the Socialists.
‘Socialism is an ancient Aryan, Germanic institution. Our German ancestors held certain lands in common. They cultivated the idea of the common weal. Marxism has no right to disguise itself as socialism. Socialism, unlike Marxism, does not repudiate private property. Unlike Marxism, it involves no negation of personality and, unlike Marxism, it is patriotic.
‘We might have called ourselves the Liberal Party. We chose to call ourselves the National Socialists. We are not internationalists. Our Socialism is national. We demand the fulfilment of the just claims of the productive classes by the State on the basis of race solidarity. To us, State and race are one…
‘What’, I continued my cross-examination, ‘are the fundamental planks of your platform?’
‘We believe in a healthy mind, in a healthy body. The body politic must be sound if the soul is to be healthy. Moral and physical health are synonymous.’
‘Mussolini’, I interjected, ‘said the same to me’. Hitler beamed.
‘The slums’, he added, ‘are responsible for nine-tenths, alcohol for one-tenth of all human depravity. No healthy man is a Marxian. Healthy men recognise the value of personality. We contend against the forces of disaster and degeneration. Bavaria is comparatively healthy because it is not completely industrialised… If we wish to save Germany, we must see to it that our farmers remain faithful to the land. To do so, they must have room to breathe and room to work.’
‘Where will you find the room to work?’
‘We must retain our colonies and expand eastward. There was a time when we could have shared world domination with England. Now we must stretch our cramped limbs only toward the east. The Baltic is necessarily a German lake.'”

No way PeePee appeals to enough moderates. Harper and Peter McKay merged the conservatives and the reform and we haven’t had a conservative PM since Harper a decade ago. Canadians federally are mostly just liberal.
Not to mention, as long as Doug Ford (the most powerful conservative in Canada) is in power in Ontario, federally the country will never go conservative. There is always either a conservative federal government with a liberal Ontario provincial government or a liberal federal government with a conservative Ontario provincial government. They never align.

For those in the US, it's the equivalent of a governor with presidential aspirations blowing a 30 point lead to lose the election, then immediately getting voted out of his governorship, only to then ask Greg Abbott to step down so he can run for governor of Texas while living in DC.
The guy fails big. And with no shame. We should give it a name.
Pp level fail.
So if socialism is bad because it's in the name of Nazis, then democratic republics for the people must be pretty horrible too, going by the DPRK.
While we're cherry-picking, the Kingdom of Norway is consistently one of the best countries to live in across several metrics. So clearly we should go back to kingdoms, because it's in the name. Sometimes the old ways are best XD
There's a much more-fundamental example:
Socialism is when parents shelter, clothe, & feed, their children, who don't have earnings to shelter/clothe/feed themselves.
Every parent who feeds their babies is demonstrating socialism, no matter what their politics purport to be.
Keep the framing universal, & that guts the gaslighting's position MUCH more effectively.
_ /\ _
Thanks for sharing that idea! I appreciate what you’re getting at: that basic care (food, clothing) embodies the tenet of equality in socialism. However, the example of a parent feeding a child doesn't quite capture the power-relations, freedoms, and systems aspects of socialism. I don't think we really want to say a master feeding/clothing their slave or a king feeding/clothing a favorite court jester is really "demonstrating socialism". Socialism is about how society as a whole arranges ownership, production, and resource distribution (i.e. collective ownership of the means of production). It's a counter to capitalism.
Parental relationships are, ironically, a special case where limiting freedoms and greater power disparity are justified in most egalitarian systems. We usually don't give children ownership over the means of production.

States (a state is a government, a nation is a group of people) can do whatever they want with their passport. One of the perks of being sovereign. But there are groups of countries that have mutually agreed what should be on a passport and how/where.
The EU is a big example, but there is also a common passport for ECOWAS for several West African states and many others.
That said, I think they all list sex/gender, but I'm open to being corrected by someone who actually knows.

It is obviously based on an outdated concept of gender, but it actually is pretty useful to help match people to passports. If someone identifies as male but is dressed like a woman, it raises red flags. The answer to that might be as simple as "This is a 90s sitcom and I lost a transphobic bet" but it is there. Same with hair color.
Which, funny enough, is an argument for people to actually write down the gender they identify as. But it is also a lot like hair color or facial hair in that it is just too cost and time prohibitive to update a passport every time someone tries a new look. Because... genderfluid people exist.

I believe that the game Trump is playing is this:
- Get us to contract to buy weapons from them,
- declare annexation/war against Canada,
- keep the money, bankrupting our ability to buy weapons,
- use the weapons we paid-for against Canada, to gain Trump's "Manifest Destiny" quicker & more-efficiently,
- then Trump gets to be "king of the entire continent" before he dies.
For all who believe this is baseless delusion, have some fact: thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/…
This has been brewing all along, since the days of the colonies warring against each-other, the British-loyal colonies vs the United-States colonies..
When somebody pointed-out here in c/world , the other day, that Trump appears to be hoping that Europe will strike Russia so that he can then openly side with Russia, against Europe, .. damn, I wish I'd seen/understood that machiavellianism..
I don't remember what video he was linking-to ( as I didn't watch it ) that convinced him that this was going-on, but it was an understanding pushed by evidence, not just some narcissist-conspiricism, it seemed to me.
Also, it got the natures/motivations/behaviors in a better-fit than my previous understanding did, so I accept it as operationally-true.
I've been telling people for .. perhaps a decade, now, that Trump will ditch NATO, join Russia ( as the now-disappeared-from-the-internet "Kremlin Papers" journalism identified: his original backer ), & help Russia destroy the hated woke countries, especially the EU.
lee.senate.gov/2025/6/lee-intr…
I hadn't forseen his declaring war against Canada, so as to possess the entire-continent, until recently ( past year or so? ).
It's inevitable, now.
The reason he wants Greenland is so that between Alaska, mainland US, Greenland, & Trump's former-Pentagon/now-Department-Of-War, his airforce & his navy, he can SNUFF Canada's trade, & thereby break Canada's life more-efficiently.
There IS unconscious-strategy going-on, in him.
His SurfaceMind's a chaotic mess, but his unconscious-mind is strategic, & lethal, as Project-2025's successful implimentation proves..
There is ZERO point in pretending that Trump will allow any election to unseat him: Civil War Part2 will happen, when he doesn't permit whichever election it is that he feels fundamentally-threatened by. Maybe 2026 he'll just "deregister" all Democrats, so they can't vote, or maybe he'll just "denaturalize" them, so they don't even have citizenship in any country, anymore, & ICE can deport them all legally.
The US of A's finished as a real country with civil-rights & constitutional-rule-of-law.
The longer the rest of the world pretends otherwise, the farther along the path of self-destruction humankind puts itself, & therefore the smaller the fraction of POSSIBLE survivors of this-century's Great Filter.
It's the species-equivalent to puberty: you can't believe-your-way-past-it, it is an all-consuming-tranformation that eats your unconscious-mind's nature, & FORCES one's life into embodying it.
All world-species who gain world-shattering technology, WITHOUT their unconscious-mind/nature growing-up, break their world's ecology, & then shred themselves in wars as the food-chain, the climate, enforced-migrations, political/ideological rabies, etc, all COMBINE at once..
It is inevitable.
Surviving it isn't inevitable, but is an opportunity, IF earned.
We're .. not earning that, presently, but instead going in a distinctly-different direction.

Universe couldn't care: species-extinction is every bit as socially "valid" as is species-growing-up, right?

NOSTR and content moderation
I wrote a rather lenghty to reply to some guy's toot asking about if he should block mostr.pub. I thought it might be appreciated here.
Getting some reports about #mostr accounts that seem to just spew word soup, maybe to spam hashtags and links but after reading through a few profiles, I'm unsure what the deal there is. Am I right in assuming that nostr is by design more or less unmoderateable? Is that reason enough to block the bridge? #FediAdmin
NOSTR is a protocol just like ActivityPub is. Neither protocol in-and-of-itself is moderated but supports the ability to be moderated. ActivityPub does it via instances and sometimes is baked right into the platform. (I recall at one time Lemmy automatically blocked any posts that contained reactionary language unless the admin edited the source code and re-compiled it themselves). Similarly, NOSTR relays chose how to handle the reports much the same way AP servers set their own standards.
If I understand correctly, a report goes to whichever relays mostr.pub is connected to, and it's up to each relay how to handle it. Some tag you as a whinny little bitch, others take that note out immediately, others ignore, and I think some actually have a dude look at its content and make decisions whether to remove the nevent (post) or actually block the npub (user).
Same as if you were using a NOSTR "account" yourself, except you don't have control over which relays your account connects to as natives do, by specifically connecting, or specifically blocking in your client. Instead, I think, it is solely determined by which nostr users connect their client to wss://realy.mostr.pub and which other relays those same users are connected to. I believe a given nostr relay can choose to block any user that connects to a particular other relay.
I don't expect @alexto be making any such blocks from the mostr relay. My understanding is that one of the reasons he's shifted his focus for Soapbox from a Pleroma focused solution to a NOSTR one is one thing that always bothered him about the AP powered 'verse is some random dude can cut off communication between you and your friend unless at least one of the two of you administers your own instance or you create a new account on a different instance.
I'm uncertain if momostr.pink or the other nostr bridge, whose name I can't remember currently, have similar lax policies that mostr.pub does or not. Regardless if you want direct control over anything more than blocking particular users, you are going to have to block any of these bridges.
In my personal experience I've been on NOSTR for over a year now, but Frienidca remains my primary social media. In that time I can say I've seen way more Bitcoin propaganda than even I am interested in, but certainly a lot less fascist, TERF, and racist nonsense than I have in some corners of the AP based 'verse. But bitcoin bois can get awful annoying. In general hosting a mastodon (or other platform) instance can be a dicey legal situation because you have little control on whether someone's [potentially illegal] porn ends up being stored on your hardware . This doesn't significantly change if you choose to connect your server to a nostr bridge or not.
BTW Soapbox, including mostr, doesn't connect to lemmy. I don't know if that was a purposeful design decision or just no one has bothered to make it work. There is at least one lemmy-like NOSTR client, Zapddit if it could connect to lemmy it might make me shift from Friendica to NOSTR as my primary social media.

U.S. to Share Intelligence With Ukraine for Strikes on Russian Energy Sites as Washington Asks NATO Allies to Provide Kyiv with Similar Support
U.S. President Donald Trump has authorized American intelligence agencies to provide Ukraine with targeting data for strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, including oil refineries, pipelines and power plants, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing anonymous American officials.
The order, which directs the Pentagon and intelligence services to supply the information, came shortly before Trump said that he believed Ukraine could win the war and reclaim all of its territory from Russia, the report said.
Trump has voiced increasing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin as his efforts to mediate an end to the war have flatlined, and the intelligence-sharing is the latest signal that he is now deepening his support for Kyiv.
Washington has also asked NATO allies to provide Kyiv with similar support, according to the sources.

Thousands of trucks from China build up at Russia–Kazakhstan border amid the Kazakh government's enhanced controls, stricter enforcement of Western sanctions

Yaroslav Belousov, head of international transport operations at FM Logistic in Russia, attributed the delays to intensified border checks, as both countries step up efforts to identify “dishonest shippers and carriers.” He added that many crossings are overwhelmed, with trucks filling nearby parking lots and lining the shoulders of approach roads.

[Deputy head of logistics at the transport company SLK Maim] Yemelin said that the delays could indicate a shift in Kazakhstan’s stance on sanctions enforcement. “It’s safe to say this isn’t a temporary glitch, but more likely a new reality — tighter controls and greater compliance with Western sanctions.”

Is it? Has this been confirmed? I see lots of western media claiming Russia but don’t see any objective evidence.
Edit: it’s quite surprising how even on Lemmy, how easy it is to push an unquestioned narrative. Not just me, but anyone even questioning from mainstream narrative gets downvoted to oblivion.

Easy for me to say, they should have kept rolling and forced the Israelis to get violent. I'm American, with a few reasons to fear these our fascists, made my choice. If it comes to it, I fight. Neither my government nor Israel has shown any quarter, no reason not to die with our boots on.

You know the nazis want you to do nothing, right?
"No, nazis want me to attack them!"
No, no they do not. They are cowards, only acting strong when they hugely outnumber everyone around them. But they don't outnumber us. They only do, if you sit in your house and tell people to do the same thing.
Then start assembling your army and go invade Israel.
No? Right. The flotilla didn't have the ability to muscle past the Israeli military; grassroots endeavours never will. The only way to win is to continue drawing attention to how awful they are until the people with real firepower do something.
If that never happens, then the fascists in charge of Israel win. It sucks, but talking tough on the internet won't change it. The Communists didn't prevent the Nazis rise to power by brawling with them in the street either.
This can have a massive impact on European politics, especially in Italy and especially if the response from the Italian dockworkers totally fucks up the operations of Italian ports for a couple of weeks.
Also I'm curious about the reaction in Spain given that the frigate they sent did fuck all.
That's not an attack.
It's a defense.
It's also not terrorism.
Good job being average.
If it comes to it, I fight.

Legality. Israel can't arrest someone in international waters. They can kidnap someone in international waters. But an arrest implies they have any legality to it. They do not. They're the ones committing a crime not her.
It's like saying the bank robber arrested their hostages.
Legality is a fiction created by the powerful. I’m saying the word arrest is a synonym for kidnapping. It’s only existence is to mislead people into accepting the violence of our rules against ordinary people.
This is a perfect example. The kidnapping of Greta is blatantly illegal. Yet the world will pretend otherwise. And not because of the law but because of power.
It's still important to not conflate the two.
While most legal systems are far from ideal, a lot of people appreciate having some semblance of law and order.
An arrest is made when someone is believed to have committed a crime. A kidnapping is the unlawful capturing of an individual.
Enforcers of the legal system (police, ICE, and other 3 letter agencies) carry out both legal arrests and unlawful kidnappings, the latter of which is what's being discussed here.
The fact that "the world will pretend otherwise" is exactly why it is so important to emphasise the difference between the 2 words.
we need to challenge this idea that violence done by the state is automatically legitimate
That is exactly what the top-level comment was doing.
The use of specific vocabulary is important in how media normalizes the actions of "the powerful".
What you're saying is similar to how "died" could be a synonym for "killed". This was used constantly during the genocide. Israelis were "killed" or "slaughtered" on October 7th. Soldiers in tanks were "kidnapped" that day. But every day in Gaza children just "died". Like the news articles were describing some natural disaster event and not a genocide. The people spending decades in Israeli prisons camps with no trial were "prisoners" exchanged for "hostages".
Words matter. Especially when media is forming a narrative. Yes, legality is "fiction" but that doesn't mean the majority of the Western world doesn't believe that fiction. The entire idea of a justice system is "made up" it's power comes from the collective belief in that system and the use of "justified" violence it maintains a monopoly on. You may not believe it. But most people in the west still do.
It is important to call out the inconsistent and unfair use of the vocabulary the media uses to describe Israels actions. If we stop labeling their crimes because "it doesn't matter anymore, clearly no justice exists" but at the same time that language is still used to describe anyone's resistance to Israel then they have won the narrative.
I mean you can think it’s good for people to be abducted under some circumstances. Maybe you are right, maybe not, but at least then you’d have to justify it. “Arrested” already means justified in most people’s minds. It’s a thought-terminating cliche, and as long as we make that distinction, it will be abused as in this case.
Using less savory words like kidnapping or abduction more accurately relays the severity and violence that’s happening. And yes, violence is sometimes necessary, but it’s still unsavory.
Abduction implies someone secretly being taken away and kept at an unknown location, their fate unknown and probably someone trying to ransom them to their family.
Here we have pictures of the IDF taking her, we know exactly where they're taking her and what's going to happen. They're not going to physically harm her, going to give her an inconsequential slap on the wrist, and put her on a plane back home.
It's ok to feel that's wrong, but trying to make it seem more horrible by using words invented for something else just seems petty.
You (I hope) recognize that
the state kidnapping a pedophile and puting them in prison.
vs.
a pedophile kidnapping a child and putting them in their basement
are different beyond just the material action of forcefully taking someone against their will. There is context that matters. So we use different words to describe the different contextual relationships. This example is a clear difference. I really hope we don't have to debate that. It's why I'm using it as an example. So we can remove the moral ambiguity and agree to this distinction.
There are obviously less extreme examples of this. That is the why understanding how language is used is important. In reality we say "the child was kidnapped" and "the pedophile was arrested". It is vocabulary that describes the relationships of morality that we as a society assume to uphold.
By your reasoning they "are both acts of violence and taking someone against their will and imprisoning them". I get that mate. But the world you want to live in where we describe both these actions as "kidnapping" does not exist.
Like, in what reality is your opinion even useful to reality? We don't live in a world where language is used the way you want it to be. You need to understand the world you live in and the way language is used.
Understanding how and why the media uses words like "arrest" vs. "kidnap" to infer a false justification is significantly more helpful than saying "well we should simplify language". Human language isn't a programming language. It can't be. It needs to deal with significantly more ambiguity, emotions, and morals.
Like, how are you even trying to apply this type of reasoning to the world? It's useless for describing reality. Language isn't used the way you want it to. And it never will work that way. What you're trying to argue for isn't useful to describing reality.
Language is always subject to change and evolution. I can’t predict the future and neither can you. I think explaining that context verbally is less harmful than implying it with weasel words.
And even if my desired change doesn’t happen, I think it’s valuable to challenge the assumptions built into these words to make people think about them and the way they are used instead of just blindly accepting “the criminal was arrested”.
Legal systems are a necessity as long as there are people willing to do violence to others. Ideally, they'll constrain the use of violence on behalf of the collective to cases where it's the only way to stop violence being perpetrated by individuals: To arrest them.
Practically, any human creation will have flaws, and nearly all systems will be biased in favour of the powerful. That doesn't categorically make it useless for the people.
Arrest in international waters is actually legal during a naval blockade. If a ship has announced its intention to break a the naval blockade, continues to head for it, and doesn’t react to hails, then it’s legal. Look up maritime law on blockades.
Same as you can arrest a criminal just before committing a crime.
Wrong. Israels actions of blockade and starvation are illegal. Full stop. The law you're referring to does not apply to a nation in violation of these laws. Israel doesn't get to point to a law to protect them as they violate other international laws and genocide a population. You're just wrong. That's not how laws work. You can't just read one law and then say "welp, guess they can do this". They can't when the very blockade itself is illegal. The blockade itself has to be a legal blockade that does not starve a population of aid and committing acts of genocide.
You're just so embarrassingly wrong.

Why can’t they just let Gretta win?
I mean... They did, didn't they? It was never the goal to actually get there. The goal was obviously media attention (again) and we are now commenting under a news article...
Its just a few truck loads of food.
That's the point... Why let a few influencers enter a war zone with the risk of them getting killed when they could instead easily let a few trucks waiting in front of the boarder enter Gaza?
welp: there's your problem! right here:
Reading the Bible
The Epicurian Paradox. God claims to be omnipresent, omnipotent, and omnibenevolent. But the mere existence of evil overwhelmingly disproves this claim:
- If god is able and willing to stop evil, but evil is able to hide from/fool god, god cannot be omnipresent.
- If god is able to find all evil and willing to stop it, but unable to do so, god cannot be omnipotent.
- If god is able to find evil and stop it, but unwilling to do so, god cannot be omnibenevolent.
In any of the three cases, if evil exists, god has been proven a liar in at least one of the three claims. Potentially two, or even all three. But at least one must be true if evil exists. And if at least one is true and god is a liar, why are we following him?
So glad those Italian and Spanish ships did…
Being there likely saved Gretta from getting merc'd by an IDF sniper.
They're not doing enough, but they're also not doing nothing.
They said from the beginning that they were only there to rescue anyone should they end up in the ocean. Not to protect the aid boats.
The fact that they openly said that tells you all you need to know about thier governments.
For once, it doesn't have to be blackmail. The Zionists have Uncle Sam. Relations between the EU and the US are already not the strongest they've been. Risking the ire of a large power like that is not exactly smart diplomacy.
Would it have been the right thing to do? Absolutely.
Gaza aid flotilla in the title. Not Greta's flotilla. Her name is there because she's the most well known person there, probably and also because not everyone was arrested.
It says in the article
The Global Sumud Flotilla said most of its vessels were continuing their journey as of early Thursday morning, nearing the coast of the Gaza strip despite the interruptions.
I’m a Guardian reader and I would say in recent months they have taken a largely pro-Palestinian viewpoint. For example: theguardian.com/world/2025/oct…
Parts of Gaza are experiencing famine because of an Israeli blockade, while more than half a million people have been displaced south by bombing over the past six weeks. Israel insists there is no famine, contrary to the findings of most global aid bodies. Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has killed at least 66,200 Palestinians and wounded about 170,000, according to the Gaza health authority.
That doesn’t sound like Zionist propaganda to me, it sounds like an accurate tally of the suffering that Israel is causing.
At least 53 Palestinians killed in fresh wave of Israeli attacks on Gaza
Military offensive stepped up as Hamas leaders consider Trump’s 20-point peace planWilliam Christou (The Guardian)
Strike called in Italy, protests flare over interception of Gaza aid ships
Italian unions called a general strike for Friday in solidarity with the international aid flotilla for Gaza, while protests sprang up in a number of cities late on Wednesday after reports that the ships had been intercepted by military personnel.
In the southern city of Naples, demonstrators got into the main railway station and halted train traffic, while police surrounded the Termini railway station in Rome after protesters gathered close to entrances.
...
In the northwestern city of Genoa, the USB announced that it intended to block the port and called on all protesters to gather at 10 p.m. (2000 GMT) at one of the main entrances.
Over the past two weeks, protesting Italian dockworkers have prevented various ships from docking and loading, targeting vessels they say were involved in trade with Israel.

Religion is fucking stupid anyway, so a theocratic country is extra stupid.
Yep, which is why granting Palestine statehood would be also extra stupid.
Really? Now?
Palestinians deserve their own state, religious or not, that is not for you to judge
What are you confrontationally blabbing about? If you agree that most countries agrees to have a Palestinian state should be ruled by the PA and Israel and the USA refuse any state, then we have no disagreement.
How about you simply admit that what ticked you and other people downvoting my comment is the fact that I call out Hamas along with Israel? I realize there's a lot of opposition being promoted by pro-Hamas groups, but they really don't need to make it that obvious. Anyway, I'll let you get back at your next attempt to gaslight me.
Although I am surprised that you conceded to a two state solution. Now that there is consensus that Israel is performing genocide, there has been a change in the narrative towards a more of a "destroy Israel, our state is the rightful state" subtly, beginning by claiming that the two state solution is a Zionist lie along with the claim that a lot of people in Israel are discontented with Netanyahu, all to portray them as one great villain (sort of what Netanyahu and his far right buddiers are doing to Palestinians, too). Are you sure you've got the latest memo?
You are claiming that Hamas is the reason why there is no state, it is factually wrong. If you condemn hamas killing or attacking civilians , i eould havr no problem with that.
Poor you crying about being downvoted
It is part of the reason there isn't. Most of it is due to Israel, but that's also why they propped up Hamas over the PA
Everything is due to Israel because even if Hamas is destroyed they will refuse to end occupation. Netanyahu said it there will be no Palestinian state because the land is our.
If you was alive during Nat Turner revolt you would have talked about how Nat Turner was part of the reason why slavery existed for long time instead of saying the salve owner was the only one responsible for it. If you where alive during a bloody revolt from indigenous people against the settlers you would have talked about how indigenous people was part of the problem. You have no moral and should be ashamed of your BS
Sorry not-sorry to have offended your pro-Hamas sensibilities.
I am offended by hypocrites like you who give excuse to the occupier to continue the occupation.
The PA is the one who allows Palestinians to be attacked by the settler terrorists and continue to respect the oslo accords that israel is not respecting everyday
Looking at your modlog, that's clearly not the only thing you are offended by. Not that it's anything surprising.
You know, you'd think someone who thinks they are right would be more honest about their convictions.
You can't refute everything i said so you rely on deflection. You think you are smart but everybody know all your BS. The only people i insult is people who defend genocide or the one who started the insults. At least i am not offended by people downvoting me unlike you
Netanyahu said there will never be a Palestinian state because the land is our so Israel is the only one who do not want peace
You aren't even responding rationally, or maybe I'm being too generous and you are just trying to continue to gaslight. Maybe you shouldn't get so passionate when you handle the language you are communicating in and its comprehension so poorly.
Is it in poor taste to observe that you certainly live up to your username?
I am rational. Israel believe the whole land belong to them so they will refuse a Palestinian state no matter what so just apply basic logic Israel who have all the power is the reason why there is no Palestinian state . Everybody understand what i am saying , it is always pro genocide that accuse me of that.
I am still waiting for counter argument but you don't so you just try to make the discussion about me
Got it so more gaslighting from Mr. Down. At this rate, you have to have a syndrome named after you.
Is this your strategy? Find anyone who criticizes Hamas and try to paint them as pro-Israel / pro-Hamas? Does it actually work in subs you don't control? You guys realize this isn't reddit, right?
Netanyahu said there will never be a Palestinian state because the land is our. Explain how it is not 100% Israel fault that there is no Palestinian state
