Useless to you. I extremely need to know the Pythagorean Theorem for my work. Actually, absolutely everything I have ever been taught in math class ever, literally all of it and so much more, I have used. But I'm starting a PhD in electrical engineering in the fall, so I'm a bit biased 😆.
For me personally, dissecting frogs (well actually I dissected a clam) was probably a waste of time, but for at least some of my classmates it was probably helpful. Long division is important because it stimulates algorithmic thinking, which is important for living in a computerized world. Area of a trapezoid is important because... sometimes trapezoids show up, or you can approximate a more complicated shape with a trapezoid whose properties are well understood.
It's also important for people who will never use it again. Learning algebra and geometry teaches you how to think critically and logically. So yeah, the gas station attendant over here may never use the cone area formula ever again, but at least it's not magic to them.
Honestly I think engineers of all kinds can benefit from more study of biological systems. As an engineer myself, I find there's a lot of inspiration to be gained by looking at life and understanding how it works. My primary work is controls and learning that biological muscle operates as bang bang control was mindblowing. Like look at the agility and complexity achieved by essentially a fuck load of on off actuators. It shows how far you can go with extremely simple methods and honestly helped me chill the fuck out about making everything perfect.

Agreed. My point was more that I didn't really learn much from actually dissecting a real animal. Like I probably would have learned more from reading a book or watching someone else do the dissection.
All of these things were useful to be taught. Just because you never needed to dissect a frog again in your life doesn't mean you shouldn't have an understanding of biology that these types of exercises provide.
'useful,' I doubt it for most people. Informative, like watching how to build a turbine engine, which you would probably never do in your lifetime unless you were an Aerospace engineer.
IMO all people should receive a broad general education. It's good for the individual and for society. Even a poet should have at least a basic understanding of how an engine works and have some exposure to mathematics or whatever.
Nowhere in the meme did it suggest removing it from the education system. It still doesn't mean it is useful for most people, outside of niche fields. The two things can both be true.
You forget most of what you learn if your memory muscle is not flexed regularly, especially on complex math equations and the like, so I would say it is useless for those that fall into this category.
But you’ll remember that you solved something “similar” before and know that you can trace back or use some keywords in google/bing/ddg/etc to find a blog or something that goes over it in detail. Helping you solve the issue.

People thinking knowledge outside their career is useless is how we ended up with flat earthers, climate change deniers, anti vaxxers, anti maskers, and 5G conspiracy theorists. Most of those people are not objectively stupid, but they work in industries not closely related to science and instead of trying to learn how science actually works, they just blindly go with their assumptions and post their own opinions online thinking they're just as much an authority on it as the actual experts. And then more people ignorant of science end up thinking their intuition makes more sense than the published knowledge so they start denying science too.
So i agree that learning things like this is important but feel the need to point out the reason we have flat earthers and other nonsense is because the capitalist ruling classes benefit from an uneducated populace and purposefully push nonsense conspiracies in the media to divide and confuse the working class. Yes education can help with these things, but plenty of highly educated people believe in this stuff too.

Also as a joke, it’s so unoriginal. I’ve seen a million of these same jokes about ‘useless stuff they taught you in school’ and they’re all so unfunny and tired—especially after the first time. Say something new.

When I was in the military in a leadership class, we had to use a protractor to calculate angles and distances on the map given a bunch of coordinates. I realized these were all right triangles, said fuck the protractor, and used trigonometry to get exact answers. I earned distinguished honor graduate, ie top of the class, despite my lab nerd POG ass being mixed in with a ton of infantry and ranger battalion guys.
I use dimensional analysis on a near daily basis because it’s just so damn handy. You can convert anything to nearly anything else as long as you have some numbers with the appropriate units in between.
Dimensional analysis needs to be taught way sooner (referring to USA education here). I'm sure I had some sense of it earlier, but it wasn't explicitly spelled out to me until college engineering courses. That's despite taking a significant number of AP and community college math and science courses in highschool. It seems like it should be part of middle school.

Some people can absently smoke a cigarette by the river, fully unaware of the fact that the volume of their tits has changed by .17% in the last 24 hours.
School is meant to introduce you to a wide variety of fields and disciplines to help you choose a career. You might not have had any interest in geometry, but at least some of your classmates did and they may well be architects or engineers by now. Meanwhile, you probably had other things in school you liked but the other kids didn't, which almost certainly influenced the kinds of jobs you want as an adult.

I have needed both of those things just this summer, and just as part of a hobby! When building things even just knowing the 3-4-5 shortcut for the pythagorean theorem is incredibly handy.
Yeah this seems generally opposed to the concept of a general education. I get that many people don't like that they had to learn all these things in an environment that generally sucked to be in, but also basic understanding of math, science, language, music, etc is just a nice thing for everyone to possess.
Like several of these things will be tangentially encountered at various points in your life. Yeah I've never had to write in cursive, but I've had to read it. I haven't done much chemistry since college, but carbon sure comes into the news a whole lot. I don't use a protractor much, but I've had to imagine them for various uses of space. I don't diagram sentences often, but it's really useful when learning a foreign language, and also way too much of the country thinks pronouns were invented in the 21st century. Communal making of music is something that used to be normal as a fun way to pass an evening and recorders are cheap and easy for children to learn.

You can lead a horse to water ... I get the sentiment though. Schooling is a great idea that is too often poorly executed. I've found that educational materials for math and science sometimes have a circlejerk kind of attitude, like the authors are laughing at the thought of students struggling with a problem "left as an exercise to the reader" immediately following a wall of dense, incomprehensible text.
Where can I find examples of otherwise dry subjects taught well? Is there an educational system that's praised in the same way they praise Scandinavian prisons? Or is the pain of learning just a necessary evil?
Sometimes what they're teaching you isn't what they're teaching you.
Maybe you don't need to know how to find the exact surface area of a cone ever again, but the idea of unwrapping a cone to measure the surface area leaves an impression of a technique for deconstructing a problem, or that problems can be deconstructed into simpler parts at all. It also leaves you with a feel for roughly what the surface area of different shapes would be.
Using a protractor teaches you how to measure accurately and use tools.
Cursive and recorder teaches hand eye coordination, and music is just fundamental to human beings.
Then again maybe you do need to find the surface area of a cone one day, and you could probably go ahead and work out how that would be done even if you don't remember exactly.

That's why in ny opinion it's criminal that for most high school math stops before calculus. Calculus wraps up so many loose ends and replaces rote memorization techniques with understanding. Why exactly is the area of a ___ = (formula)? Calculus answers that.
The quadratic formula too, calc replaces it. In fact if I had my way with the curriculum we would skip that one entirety in algebra. I'd also throw in a statistics class, which would directly impact just about everyone's lives, but that's another matter.
I never learned my times tables either. We don't teach them anymore anyway.
Except special needs, in our daily life is often needed geometry, trigonometry and algebra more than we think, but in the professional use it's more like this:

There's a weird anti-intellectual contingent on Lemmy. I saw a dude the other day who was going on about how debt was the ultimate evil and then when questioned on it said that the entire study of economics was a conspiracy to make people want debt. Now there are kooky people on all platforms but this guy was getting upvoted a decent amount. I have also been downvoted a few times for pointing out flat out inaccuracies people have said about various religions and their beliefs because "religion bad" outweighs all logic.

Don’t abuse open-source software maintainers or this might happen
My Thunderbird add-on is incompatible with a Thunderbird fork called Betterbird. It says so in the release notes and explicitly says there, “Using Send Later with Betterbird is therefore not recommended.”
Nevertheless, knowing that this is the case, Chandler Sobel-Sorenson <Chandler@genome.arizona.edu> of the University of Arizona Genomics Institute wrote to me asking for me to help him with Send Later on Betterbird. In his email he acknowledged that he was using Betterbird and acknowledged that he knew the release notes said Betterbird wasn’t supported:
I was reading over the release notes. I didn’t see this mentioned, but I am using Betterbird 128.12.0esr-bb30 currently and saw that there are issues with BB. Could this be one? I can’t switch back to TB and would like to keep using Send Later so I hope we can figure it out.
That’s annoying and a bit rude, but he was at least polite about it on the surface, so I responded and told him (again) that I do not support Betterbird:
Regarding the issue you are seeing, I am sorry, but I do not currently have the capacity to support Send Later in Betterbird.
This apparently wasn’t the answer he wanted, so he wrote back and asked me again to help him with Betterbird, which I had already told him twice (in the release notes, and in private email) I couldn’t help him with:

Although BB is supposed to be a drop in replacement and not exhibit such errors and the last version of SL was working fine, can you spare a minute and lmk if anything in the error stands out to you? Maybe assume I’m still using TB, does the error make sense or indicate anything to you?
Although his words here seem quite polite, he is not actually being polite. He says, “I completely understand.” OK, let’s take him at his word and assume it’s true that he understands. What he understands, then, is that he has now been told twice that I could not help him with using my add-on with Betterbird, and yet he persisted in asking me to do so. This is the second time he has intentionally crossed a boundary after having it explicitly pointed out to him.
In my next response to him, I was therefore more explicit:
My release notes already say that BB is not supported with Send Later.
And yet you wrote to me about it and asked me to help you with it anyway.
And then I told you (again, for the second time, since I already told you in the release notes) that I couldn’t help you.
And then you wrote to me again and asked me to help you again.
Do you not see how rude you are being here?
Please stop.
Do not create a Send Later issue about this. I will close it if you do, because, again, Send Later does not currently support Betterbird.
That’s when he switched from his work email account to his personal email account <scar@riseup.net>, presumably because he knew the message he was about to send would get him in trouble at work, and sent me the following:
Sir what the fuck is wrong with you? How many minutes did you waste writing this rude piece of shit email to me? When you could have just fucking answered my question, and said “No nothing comes to mind sorry”? I rescind my offer to help you with anything and I will post an issue on Github if I determine it’s most appropriate. Close it all you want, it will not stop me and others from finding solutions instead of being whatever sorry sad state you are in.
When someone is abusive like this to me in private, I name them publicly. Abusive people deserve to be called out publicly because (a) there should be consequences for abusive conduct, (b) the threat of public exposure deters people from being privately abusive, and (c) people who might be put in a position to interact with abusive people should be warned about them.
I had by this point already complained on Mastodon about Mr. Sobel-Sorenson’s earlier conduct without naming him. After his last message above I posted a followup to that earlier posting identifying him by name and quoting the above message and told him I had done so. He then posted several replies on Mastodon claiming I was the one who had been rude. When it became clear that he was not going to admit he had done anything wrong or apologize, I blocked him both there and in email.
All that happened over two weeks ago. Apparently since then Mr. Sobel-Sorenson has repeatedly asked the moderator of my Mastodon server to take down the postings in which I identified him, and the moderator opted to do that this morning. While I don’t agree with the decision to take down the postings, I can understand that it was probably easier for the moderator to do that than to continue arguing with Mr. Sobel-Sorenson.
However, the moderator of my Mastodon server does not control my blog, and this posting will stay up here until/unless Mr. Sobel-Sorenson apologizes.
We’ll just have to wait and see whether Mr. Sobel-Sorenson is fragile enough to now try to convince Linode or Akamai to force me to take down this blog posting.

My company spent last decade automating moving entire organizations and all their software to the cloud. This decade weve been automating moving entire organizations off the cloud. Sometimes to private clouds but most of the time to on prem hardware just like the old n times.
So many were sold a magical fairytale of huge cost savings and reliability but were greated with an entirely different reality.
One extreme defensive move for an enterprise would be to implement full redundancy for anything not hosted on-premises. Redundancy for data protection is relatively straightforward, but having multiple email, supply chain, or e-commerce services is very expensive and disruptive. What are the odds that it would even be needed? Whatever those odds were, they just became much higher.
This is simply dumb. The odds are greater than zero. you must have a disaster plan. It sucks that MS did this but I don’t have much sympathy for anyone that decided to save money by ignoring DR.

People keep forgetting that "the cloud" is just someone else's computer. You don't want to pay for in-house experts to support your IT infrastructure? Welp, being locked out by a vendor is a side effect of that.
What's wild to me is how much more frequent this sort of thing seems to be becoming. Cloud services make a lot of money, but this kind of stuff is gonna drive risk-averse companies (aka huge companies with lots of money) back to on-prem or other alternatives. It seems very short-sighted. If I was a cloud provider I'd want to make myself look as ruthlessly indifferent to the services I host as possible.

My mother has never daily driven a laptop more recent than a nearly decade old macbook running macOS Sierra. (except, briefly, a quite nice work-provided windows laptop that she hated using.)
She is, however, about to buy a 2025 Lenovo Yoga 7 14", and wants to use linux on it.
As the designated "techy person" in my family, I have been tasked with choosing which distro to put on it. I chose fedora it supports modern hardware nicely, and it's what I use, which would make tech support easier.
What I'm not sure about is what desktop environment she should use. I'm currently split between GNOME and KDE, since they're the two that are the most polished and work the best on the kind of hardware she'll be using.
She seems to prefer a more traditional desktop paradigm (dislikes overly flattened ui's and autohiding ui elements like scrollbars), but given she's not very techy and currently uses an iphone and ipad quite a bit, so gnome might feel more friendly with how simple it is, and be a bit more touch-friendly.
I asked her and she's not sure either, so I'm asking here which one is might be better given the hardware and the preferences she's expressed.
I would crawl across broken glass naked to avoid using Gnome, but it is way better for tablets. You can try KDE, maybe you can get it to work somewhat, but unfortunately Gnome has been way ahead on touchscreen usability.
GNOME looks like it will be good for portable devices, but it's kinda not.
First, in my experience, Fedora on GNOME completely ignores battery limits (which are also set by jumping through so many hoops you can't even imagine). It just drains this thing to 0, which is not great for longevity. KDE, on its end, has it all in the GUI and it works flawlessly on all distros I tested.
Second, KDE has made plenty of great optimizations for touchscreens. A while ago, it was not great, but now it's just the best at handling them, especially if you theme it respectively and do not rely on defaults.
Third, customizations are so much better in KDE. You can make her laptop look and feel like a MacBook in no time, and edit everything to be touch-friendly.
One thing GNOME does well though for the use case you describe, though, is app theming, namely Adwaita. Luckily, Adwaita-themed apps and style editors for the rest are freely available on KDE, and you can even change their look as you like.
I use Cosmic sometimes, and I like it, but it's a work in progress. Things don't always work right, or they change from one update to another. An older person might want something more predictable.
You can make gnome more or less like mac with a few extensions, which works well in my experience. Extensions like apps menu, places indicator and dash to dock (or dash to panel) are useful.
You can make kde more or less like mac by sorting through a very comprehensive configuration gui, which is great for people who want it but not necessarily new users.

Ignoring conspiracy theory stuff, people aren't very good at perceiving changes in light levels if they happen gradually. During any solar eclipse there are wide bands where only a partial eclipse is observed. It's pretty common for people in those bands to not notice that something has changed even with 50% occlusion.
I'd chalk that up to the assumption that a cloud has partially or fully obscured the sun. If clouds weren't a thing, we'd be much more sensitive to light changes as they wouldn't be a part of our outdoor experience.
I'm not checking to see if the sun is still there every time the ambient light outside dims, y'know what I mean?
Photography hobbyist here: our eyes adapt to light more than we realize. What to us is a slight change in brightness is a dramatic difference to a photo camera.
If you ever get the chance to see one it's actually quite a bit more odd than a cloud passing over. It feels kinda wrong. Shadows do funny things especially around things like tree leaves. The colors are just kinda eerie. Like the other person said we're not super good at telling light levels so it LOOKS sunny but the sunlight doesn't feel warm.
But yeah if you don't know it's happening it is totally possible to miss a partial eclipse if you're inside or busy and just passing through outside.
You're right when talking about the average person with nothing but their eyes. But there are tons of companies and members of the public that have bits of tech that would call that out easily. Solar panels, environmental logging equipment, etc, would notice the drop in light levels fairly easily, and would be apparent when reviewing historical vs current levels, and the power grids would definitely notice the sun dimming dropping their power outputs.
Without going into conspiracy theory territory, there's no realistic way to hide that from the public.
Definitely, any changes natural or anthropogenic would be measured and to great accuracy. I just wanted to point out that the notion of the general public, especially if conditioned to distrust scientists and authorities, not noticing changes isn't the outlandish part. I figured, which is why I framed my comment the way I did. You may be able to discount the scientists, but can you discount them, plus citizens complaining about their solar output, power plants having to raise rates due to falling solar generation, crop impacts, and even just other citizens posting raw data all coming out with similar data over time saying it's a problem?
Having said that and looking at the state of climate change, I have a hard time not seeing the parallels against my argument. But falling solar output would have a much more immediate effect on us than climate change (and would likely reverse it to some extent).

Stop pretending substack isn't a Nazi platform, because they actively support Nazi propaganda on their site and have refused to take it down or commit to keeping it off their platform.

There's some nazi instances like explodingheads or whatever, but everyone has and continues to defederate from them instantly so it's not much of a problem for users.
Lemmy's federated structure makes it easy to block the instances which don't moderate the nazis or tankies or anything else away to your satisfaction, while Substack is a centralized platform which has chosen to not only allow, but actively encourage and reward its nazis.
So, any such problem on Lemmy is "better" because we can all (as individual users, and/or collectively as instances) deal with it as we like instead of bowing to Substack's decision to be a nazi bar for all its users.
Communism has noble goals, even if the tankies advocate self-defeating ways of achieving these goals. I'm not aware of any noble goals behind Nazism or any kind of fascism. That, to me, puts even the most infuriating tankie above any Nazi.
The problem is that it is really the only viable platform for independent articles/blogs these days. That is already a ridiculously small potential audience (people who can read AND people who are willing to pay for content). Cutting out the one platform that got any traction is as good as quitting.
It is similar to why businesses (which is what we are talking about) couldn't leave twitter until like a year and a half ago or whenever bluesky went open sign ups. Yeah, it is a platform owned by nazis and infested with them but... it is also the only way to advertise said businesses and have any hope of surviving. That said, once bluesky gained traction there is absolutely zero reason to not, at the very least, diversify (preferably dropping musknet entirely).
For Substack? Ghost is an increasingly viable platform. But just look around here for any time someone posts a link to a 404 media article and you get "Ugh. Fucking scammers want to rugpull and steal all my personal information" for... wanting ANY email to be used for a free account to just limit the impact of bot/ai scraping.
Its less that "more people are ok with Nazis than we want to admit"... especially considering many of the people on substack are talking about said fucking Nazis. The problem is that "fewer people are willing to support independent media than we want to admit". It is the same logic of "if I like a youtube channel I'll give them money on their patreon" that is patently flawed.

I looked for months for negatives to substack before starting my publications there. This is all news to me. Looking at the alternatives costing the creators a fee for zero subscribers leaves me with no choice but to stay for the moment being also. Hopefully a real contender pops up soon.

I wish it were that easy. I'm pretty tech literate and I've had Linux installed on and off since the late 1990's. I'm running fedora desktop on a dual boot machine that also has windows 10. The PC will run windows 11 but just like everyone else I'm not excited to upgrade.
But I still have to hop over to windows to do things. I know it's a chicken and egg thing, but Linux just needs to get over the hump if ease of use and app availability.
Having to switch from. App1 to app1 that boat do say, CAD, is hard. It's a learning curve. And add that learning curve into also switching to Linux and it's overwhelming.
I actually got my dad on fedora, and he went all in and set it up, and worked quite diligently to get everything working for how he used his computer. He did this because his PC was fine but not windows 11 compatible. End the end there were just too many things that he struggled with and he broke down and bought a new PC that came with 11. One of the big issues he had was with documents. Syncing documents that he was editing.
He was OK relearning a new Libre Office but it was syncing it back to a Google drive or something that ultimately did not work for him. (I can't remember exactly what he was doing).
He ran with Fedora for a couple months before giving up
I highly recommend using an old laptop and keeping the windows machine. This allows you to fully use the linux laptop as your not booting back and forth. Further with these type of issues a "bleeding edge" distro like fedora is not ideal. My recommendation has always been zorin for a set it and forget it distro. Its an ubuntu spin that uses the stable release and tends to be a bit late even on that (which is most peoples complaint about it) but it is good at being stable and having everything you need out of box as well as emulating a basic windows feel.
Not how it's worked with the rest of these features, for the record. I did get click-to-do, which is activated by default (but does nothing unless you trigger it manually). That's just an entry in their increasingly large wall of "stuff you don't want switches" in the Settings.
It's immensely wasteful in terms of dev time, but at the same time, hey, kudos for having all this stuff centralized in the one list, unwieldy as it's getting (at least there's a search in there).
I wish we could talk like adults about these things over here, because there's a ton of interesting nuance to how Windows 11 actually works, rather than the parody version that everybody loves to dunk on. There are some actually good features and choices I'd like to see make the jump to Linux and vice versa, even discounting things like hardware or software support. But nobody ever wants to have that conversation, it's all just the serotonin shot chase from rooting for the home team (and/or being contrarian about it).

They can still view it I believe but can't create an account. Also the whole thing is complete bullshit and is almost entirely for censorship and tracking all activity to a real identity.
I have struggled to filter with YouTube Kids what is allowed. The setup is default allow with channel denies (opposite of a good firewall), so I have taken to yt-dlp and Jellyfin to get around it. I don't agree with the law as written, but I get the intent. Parents should be more active in their kids's lives versus the state.
While all of that might be true, YouTube is also a for-profit cesspool of trash content, hate speech, and misinformation. An entire generation of gen z manosphere Nazi bootlickers got where they are watching "gaming videos" on YouTube.
It auto plays by default and their algorithms are dogshit, so you might start watching an educational video with your kid, but end up on a flat earth video fifteen minutes later, or much much worse.
When my son was younger, we severely limited his YouTube time and closely monitored what he was watching on it. Most parents don't do that.
I dislike legislation like this too, but we're not talking about PBS or a library here. Kids truly shouldn't be on YouTube unattended.

Gamers are easy to rile up, already have exposure to a lot of counter culture language in VC, and generally young or ignorant enough that they can't see the obvious propaganda they're being fed. Add into that content creators that intermix rightwing talking points and you can slowly poison their minds into becoming Nazi shitbags.
As the other commenter mentioned, gamergate is where all this shit first came up, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't there with the people who fell for the poison. I was just aware enough of what I was seeing to pull away from that culture before it really poisoned my mind.
I think there's not much Nazi gamer shit out there because it's incredibly rare for any to slip into my recommendations.
But if I let YouTube go it would probably take me from normal people like anyaustin to hype people like xQc. And then from there all the popular people can show up, including asmonmold. And people like him are legit brain rot.
Edit: for overwhelming Nazi content in your feed, try gun YouTubers. I binged gun Jesus and nothing. Watched Brandon Herrera (spelling?) build aks and look at cursed weapon memes and somehow that means I'm a flaming Trumper.
Currently my kids can only watch YouTube on a shared account on the TV. They haven't been exposed to any of the gift stuff as far as I can tell but we do regularly weed the history and subscriptions to keep it vaguely on track. While each of the kids have their own favourite creators we also have found a number of educational and comedy channels we'll watch with them on the account.
The bigger challenge comes with homework as once in secondary school the teachers regularly link to YouTube videos as an intro to a particular homework topic. Although their accounts are registered as kids accounts under our indirect control I keep having to move their pc out of the restricted group on the router because for some reason Eero prevents some videos from playing which from my point of view are fine. I dread to think what parents who aren't comfortable debugging network failures do, probably drop restrictions all together in frustration.
YouTube is totally blocked for my son at home and on his phone and I myself avoid it as the plague as well. If he wants to learn stuff, I'm eager to buy him all the books he wants. The moderate amount of useful resources on YT is 100% available elsewhere, on less addictive platforms or media.
Youtube very consistently ranks lowest in terms of reacting to reports of hate speech and is a massive vector for it worldwide.
I mean, I have serious doubts about the effectiveness of the measure, but Youtube is a massive contributor to the decline of democracy around the world.
Tiktok, incidentally, has way better stats on addressing hate speech complaints than Youtube. As in, by far. As in, industry leading, so in the exact opposite end of Youtube's.
I never saw it that way I till I saw a report on what the preferred social media platforms for teens… and it was the number one slot at that time. Apparently teens (and others) have entire conversations in the comments, share videos with friends, and doom scroll YouTube.
And I don’t know if you’ve read YouTube comment threads (I don’t usually) but they can get pretty toxic, even on tame content. Not to mention all the FUD and propaganda being distributed there.

Actually, absolutely everything I have ever been taught in math class ever, literally all of it and so much more, I have used. But I'm starting a PhD in electrical engineering in the fall, so I'm a bit biased 😆.
For me personally, dissecting frogs (well actually I dissected a clam) was probably a waste of time, but for at least some of my classmates it was probably helpful. Long division is important because it stimulates algorithmic thinking, which is important for living in a computerized world. Area of a trapezoid is important because... sometimes trapezoids show up, or you can approximate a more complicated shape with a trapezoid whose properties are well understood.

Unfortunately that isn’t something you can teach without lots of arbitrary and pointless examples.

When I was in the military in a leadership class, we had to use a protractor to calculate angles and distances on the map given a bunch of coordinates. I realized these were all right triangles, said fuck the protractor, and used trigonometry to get exact answers. I earned distinguished honor graduate, ie top of the class, despite my lab nerd POG ass being mixed in with a ton of infantry and ranger battalion guys.
I use dimensional analysis on a near daily basis because it’s just so damn handy. You can convert anything to nearly anything else as long as you have some numbers with the appropriate units in between.

I have needed both of those things just this summer, and just as part of a hobby! When building things even just knowing the 3-4-5 shortcut for the pythagorean theorem is incredibly handy.

I get that many people don't like that they had to learn all these things in an environment that generally sucked to be in, but also basic understanding of math, science, language, music, etc is just a nice thing for everyone to possess.
Like several of these things will be tangentially encountered at various points in your life. Yeah I've never had to write in cursive, but I've had to read it. I haven't done much chemistry since college, but carbon sure comes into the news a whole lot. I don't use a protractor much, but I've had to imagine them for various uses of space. I don't diagram sentences often, but it's really useful when learning a foreign language, and also way too much of the country thinks pronouns were invented in the 21st century. Communal making of music is something that used to be normal as a fun way to pass an evening and recorders are cheap and easy for children to learn.

I've found that educational materials for math and science sometimes have a circlejerk kind of attitude, like the authors are laughing at the thought of students struggling with a problem "left as an exercise to the reader" immediately following a wall of dense, incomprehensible text.
Where can I find examples of otherwise dry subjects taught well? Is there an educational system that's praised in the same way they praise Scandinavian prisons? Or is the pain of learning just a necessary evil?

Maybe you don't need to know how to find the exact surface area of a cone ever again, but the idea of unwrapping a cone to measure the surface area leaves an impression of a technique for deconstructing a problem, or that problems can be deconstructed into simpler parts at all. It also leaves you with a feel for roughly what the surface area of different shapes would be.
Using a protractor teaches you how to measure accurately and use tools.
Cursive and recorder teaches hand eye coordination, and music is just fundamental to human beings.
Then again maybe you do need to find the surface area of a cone one day, and you could probably go ahead and work out how that would be done even if you don't remember exactly.
What's the counterproposal for a curriculum? I'm genuinely curious here, not trying to jump down anyone's throat. What would school look like without these things?

in reply to MonkderVierte • • •That's why in ny opinion it's criminal that for most high school math stops before calculus. Calculus wraps up so many loose ends and replaces rote memorization techniques with understanding. Why exactly is the area of a ___ = (formula)? Calculus answers that.
The quadratic formula too, calc replaces it. In fact if I had my way with the curriculum we would skip that one entirety in algebra.
I'd also throw in a statistics class, which would directly impact just about everyone's lives, but that's another matter.
I never learned my times tables either. We don't teach them anymore anyway.
