Cornwall needs democratic justice, not mere ‘recognition’. In 2014, Westminster granted the Cornish “the same status as the UK’s other Celtic peoples”. But what has come of it? Just another ineffective recognition put onto the pile. As long as we’re administered like a county, the draconian and fascist parties in Westminster will fail us. The only way forward is to abandon ship on Westminster and the English state. We’ll survive the coming storm if we take power back and self-organise a devolved, democratic Cornish nation.
Every social issue we face stems from the failures of centralised power, be it in London or Exeter. Every young person stuck in a tourist job, who can’t get a bus home, or is living in their car feels the blunt end of this injustice. It is time to build a political force that threatens this status quo. A movement for dignity and justice for everyone who calls Cornwall their home.
For the past month we have been assembling a coalition. We are joining forces alongside Cornwall Resists, Palestine Solidarity Cornwall, AUOB Kernow, the Bakers Union and more. Done are the days of insular nationalism. We are mobilising for an inclusive, progressive Cornish movement. We will use the streets as our stage to share ideas, practice solidarity and bring to fruition a new, revolutionary chapter to the struggle we have inherited.
So, bring your message, your flags and your vision for Kernow. We do not have to be England’s holiday park or romantic escape. A different Cornwall is possible. We need only ignite a movement for united liberation.

A while ago, I posted about a survey that explores how researchers approach computational reproducibility, especially when working with HPC and cloud infrastructure. The goal is to better understand current practices, challenges, and needs around reproducible research workflows.
We extended the deadline to the end of this month! And we already have some 260 participants! Alas, predominantly from Germany and Belgium.

Improving accessibility in the Fediverse and the ATmosphere

One way that fedi is really unique is that so many people take the time to put alt-text on their images -- so low-vision and blind people participate much more fully than on other social networks. That said, at least half the images on most instances don't have alt-text. And alt-text is only one of many aspects of accessibility -- while some fedi software works well for people using screenreaders and other assistive technology, there's still a lot of room for improvement. Meanwhile on Bluesky and the ATmosphere ... well let's just say there's even more room for improvement.
So, let's make things better!
As a first step, let's focus on gathering information -- resources, tips, known issues, suggestions for improvements, and best practices or sources of inspiration in other software. There are some specific questions in the replies (and a few examples of resources) but really anything accessibility-related is good. This is brainstorming, so It's fine if to suggest something that's not fully fleshed out!

I'll collect the responses and follow up with a post here, on the Nexus of Privacy newsletter , and on the #accessibility hashtag. I've already talked with a couple of development teams who are interested in finding out what they can do, and since user education is an important aspect as well there will be plenty of ways people who aren't developers can help too!

Here's a few examples of accessibility resources to start things out (bearing in mind that I am not an accessibility expert!):
- For Mastodon, @WeirdWriter's Mastodon for writers/readers and Sarah Higley's (somewhat older, so not necessarily up-to-date) An oversimplified guide to setting up Mastodon are two good getting-started resources written with an accessibility focus. @FediTips page on How do I use Mastodon through a screen reader has links to several other useful resources, including Mona tutorials and a Spanish-language guide to using NVDA with Mastodon, and Accessibility resources for Mastodon and compatible software has a few more links.
Are there similar pages for other software, or other pages for Mastodon?
- Suggestions on how to write good alt-text from the American Federation for the Blind, WebAIM, Harvard's Digital Accessibility page are hopefully useful for everybody -- and so are the best practices near the end of Emoji and Low Vision, from Perkins school for the Blind.
- For developers,. testers, and content writers, @wai (the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative) and @webaim have a lot of resources. WAVE Web Accessibility Evaluation Tools and WebAIM's contrast checker are useful free tools to help check different aspects of accessibility. Keep in mind that these don't substitute for manual testing, or usability testing with people with disabilities! Still, they're very helpful at finding some glaring (and typically easy to fix) problems.
