Ok, read it (interpreted it as a poll first...). Still think I will chose a bank which is more likely to help me in that case and don't leave me broke. We had a case where a 70+year old relative got scammed. IMO "giving users new ways to shoot themself" must also then have "give the user a way disable it" and "no online banking" is increasingly not possible because having a local store is not making them as much money as online banking. So I do think the banks should take that risk.

Like many things we are making the wrong people (the banks) responsible.

We need more personal responsibility not less.

And we need better education and community support to educate people.

And we need to find a way for people to want to learn, want to understand, and accept that they have to be personally responsible for things that happen to them *that are in their control*.

This has to be coupled with banks providing a suitable level of security and friction and maybe a cooling off period that increases with the size of the transaction.

having fought with Monzo over an incorrect contactless charge (and basically lost the case, even though they refunded me in the end) I feel higher limits might encourage banks to do more to protect consumers. Perhaps what is needed here is some kind of escrow or guarding of high value transfers so that recovering transfers is more feasible? A scam on mortgage deposits doesn't sound hard to pull off, and the last time I transferred a house deposit I was terrified of it being a mistake...

I really love the article. I've been thinking what I want in a financial institution and one thing I'm going to require when I switch is a banking app that doesn't allow actual banking but does tell me about every transaction in real time.

That would significantly increase the chance of me seeing if my card details have been stolen.

But yeah idk, the scam thing is tough. We might think "if you have 500k to lose then you don't need the bank's help" but the social issues there are tough. The folks who are actually affected there are retired folks and that's all the money they have to live on. They might need it more than the smaller losses. And we as a society might have to pay more in different ways if we don't cover the cost of making them whole after a scam.

yeah my partner's credit union (Sparkasse) does it too. My crunchy granola credit union does not. As you pointed out to someone on Mastodon the other day, complaining is a good idea. I did before and they didn't understand.

Do you have this for your debit cards too or only credit cards?

In the UK we have excellent consumer protection on credit cards.

in Germany you can't use your credit card in most places (eg: the pharmacy doesn't take them). But good to know about credit cards in the UK.

@discontinuity I'm sure you have much better local knowledge than me - but I recently went to Berlin, Stuttgart, and Frankfurt and was able to pay by credit card everywhere.
Is it just a problem in smaller towns?

it's a problem with smaller businesses. And like anything that tourists don't do. It USED to be that you would have to pay cash, especially at restaurants. COVID changed that. But it's still really common that credit cards aren't taken.

Natwest do the same if you have their App on your phone.
I normally get a notification less than a minute after I make a purchase.
And it insists I log into the app to approve large online purchases.

I think perhaps, it is due to politicians realizing that stopping all CO2 would cause a global financial crash, and millions of deaths.

But they are somewhat stuck, since they are all, on the surface, green talibans. So they try to "drift" a bit to climate pragmatism, and hope that once the media stops the doom and gloom propaganda, the voters will become mentally healthy again and move on to more important things.

I hope this is the beginning of the political class waking up!

Oggi escono diverse cose che potrebbero essere importanti o quanto meno divertenti o interessanti da ascoltare: c'è innanzitutto «Double Infinity», il nuovo dellə Big Thief, e questo va tra quelle importanti; poi abbiamo «Who's the Sky?» di David Byrne, che già dalla copertina appare molto sobrio, e persino una nuova colonna sonora per «Metropolis» scritta da Roberta Sammarelli, Corrado Nuccini, Karim Qqru e Xabier Iriondo, che devo dire mi incuriosisce. E «Here Comes the Mind, There Goes the Body» degli Human Leather, che sulla carta è annunciato come mazzate e carta vetrata. E poi che altro, gli Shame? Ci ascoltiamo pure questo? Non mi attira molto.

(c'è da trovare un hashtag buono per le uscite musicali; io usavo NuoveUscite fino a qualche tempo fa, ma a parte che fa schifo al porco, non ha niente di musicale in sé)

@jakob @koenigdickbauch ahh, danke für die Info - ich find's auch immer schade wie wenig dort wächst, da tröstet ein bisschen, dass das einen Grund hat.
Whsl könnte man mehr Hochbeete aufstellen, und um die bestehenden Bäume ein bisschen entsiegeln/was pflanzen (ich bilde mir ein vor der Umgestaltung waren die Baumscheiben sogar offener als jetzt). (Hm. Was wären sonst Ideen für etwas weniger grau in grau...?)

Ganz ehrlich... Kopf hoch.
Die Mariahilferstraße hat wundervolle Bäume. Die sind mir erstmalig erst so richtig aufgefallen, wie schön die sind, als ich auf der Straßenmitte gegangen bin, nachdem sie erstmalig für den Autoverkehr gesperrt wurde.

Nur im Bereich beim Gerngros sind keine Bäume... aber da ist nichtmal unter den Gehsteigen Platz für Erde.

La Guerra Subacquea è alle porte! Il tagliacavi cinesi saranno una minaccia globale?

Il nuovo tagliacavi, sviluppato dal China Shipbuilding Research Center, è progettato per l’uso su sottomarini avanzati come le serie Fengdou e Haidou. Il dispositivo è in grado di tagliare i cavi di comunicazione corazzati in acciaio e polimero, che svolgono un ruolo fondamentale nel mantenimento o nell’interruzione della rete di comunicazioni globale, che rappresenta il 95% della trasmissione dati mondiale.

Il tagliacavi cinese per acque profonde può tagliare cavi spessi fino a 2,4 pollici a profondità di quasi 4.000 metri. (Fonte: Sustainability Time)

Il dispositivo è dotato di una mola diamantata che ruota a 1.600 giri al minuto, consentendo di strappare i cavi d’acciaio senza danneggiare il fondale marino. Il corpo in lega di titanio e il sistema di ammortizzazione a olio consentono al dispositivo di resistere a pressioni estreme sul fondale marino. Controllato da un manipolatore robotico con un sistema di posizionamento avanzato, il dispositivo garantisce un’elevata precisione anche in condizioni di scarsa visibilità.

Il dispositivo è dotato di un motore da 1 kilowatt e di un rapporto di trasmissione di 8:1, che bilancia prestazioni ed efficienza energetica. Sebbene sia progettato per applicazioni civili come il recupero subacqueo e l’estrazione mineraria in acque profonde, solleva preoccupazioni per la sicurezza internazionale. La possibilità di tagliare cavi in posizioni strategiche, come vicino a Guam, potrebbe seriamente compromettere le comunicazioni globali.

Lo sviluppo della tecnologia subacquea da parte della Cina rientra in una strategia più ampia volta ad espandere le infrastrutture e l’influenza negli oceani del mondo. Grazie alla più grande flotta sottomarina del mondo, la Cina ha accesso a vaste aree oceaniche.

Le nuove attrezzature per il taglio dei cavi, azionabili da piattaforme senza pilota difficili da individuare, offrono un vantaggio tattico nel colpire punti di strozzatura strategicamente importanti.

Sebbene gli scienziati cinesi affermino che il dispositivo sia progettato per “lo sfruttamento delle risorse marine”, il suo potenziale militare non deve essere sottovalutato.

I test hanno dimostrato che il dispositivo può tagliare cavi fino a 6,5 cm di spessore.

El ave está perchada en la rama de un roble. El fondo está difuminado y es de color verde azulado con algunos reflejos de luces.

Tiene color azulado, es un ave pequeña, del tamaño de un gorrión, pero de patas robustas, cabeza muy gruesa y pico largo y fuerte. Luce un bello color azul grisáceo en las alas, el dorso y la cola. Sus partes inferiores presentan un tono débilmente anaranjados. Presenta una especie de hueco en el pecho como de plumas descolocadas.

Segnalazione per noi nerd della #LetteraturaFantastica: sul blog della casa editrice indipendente DRM Books è uscita un'analisi retrospettiva dell'impatto di Howard Lovecraft sul concetto stesso di letteratura horror, e la tesi è che ormai l'horror anglofono è intrinsecamente Lovecraftiano.
