Sure, you can shoot, but this isn’t about filling clips. It’s about carving neon demons in half with a katana.
You play Kobayashi, the so-called Shinjuku Vampire, an assassin who drinks blood like it’s jet fuel. Every slash drains enemies, every gulp powers up your next absurd “Blood Skill.” And you’ll need it, because the Flatliners—a gang of masked psychos straight out of a fever dream—are busy trying to turn Tokyo into their playground.
The closest comparison is Shadow Warrior—but not the ’90s original, the 2013 reboot. That game let you swap between guns and swords. Here, the sword is the game. Guns are an occasional spice, not the main course.
The real loop is parrying, draining, unleashing ten different blood-fueled super attacks, then decorating your Shinjuku apartment hub with whatever loot you’ve collected between missions.
And make no mistake—this game punches above its weight. Ten years ago, something this stylish would have been marketed as AAA. The streets are drenched in neon, puddles glow with reflections, and ray-traced lighting makes every skyline pop. The devs even call for an RTX 3060 or RX 5700 XT if you want the full cyberpunk eye-candy.
Audio keeps pace: Japanese voice acting backed by English, Chinese, and Korean subtitles, plus a two-hour electronic score by Andrew Hulshult (yes, the Dusk and Doom Eternal guy). It’s all high-octane—beats that drive your pulse into the red.
Controls are responsive but take a session or two to really click. The tutorial helps, especially since the blood mechanics aren’t just a gimmick—they’re the whole game. Collect enough and you can rip out moves that feel unfair in the best way. Keyboard + mouse is the cleanest setup, though it plays fine with an Xbox pad.
Here’s the kicker: it’s cheap. Ten bucks flat (C$11.69 up north), launch discount included. No DLC, no battle passes, no “premium blood packs.” Just the game. And despite the lack of Linux native support, Proton runs it without a hiccup.
So yeah—Phoenix Game Productions’ debut title is a small miracle. A budget-priced cyberpunk slasher that punches way above its weight class.

Though, I think I managed to improve slightly upon the method by eliminating the small window where anyone who happens to know the (well-known) root password may ssh into the box. Instead of dd(1)ing the installation image onto the disk, I ran it in qemu:
qemu-system-x86_64 \
\
-cdrom mfsbsd-14.2-RELEASE-amd64.iso \
-drive format=raw,file=/dev/nvme0n1,if=virtio \
-drive format=raw,file=/dev/nvme1n1,if=virtio \

-display curses \
-m 8G
And after the installation entered shell, and changed rc.conf like so:
ifconfig_DEFAULT="DHCP"
