@evan As a person with a heavily ritualized life I don't actually have a lot of birthday rituals. I have a shirt I wear (which I made in the 90s), and I usually spend a bit of time in social media gratitude/sharing and then do whatever feels like the right thing. This year it was getting together with my sister and partner and another good friend and getting Indian food delivered (I don't have food delivery in Vermont so this felt SO DECADENT) and my sister made a cake. Nice mellow day.

I know this isn't the worst thing about the filthy rich, but it's one I think about a lot.
If I somehow ended up with enough money to very comfortably support myself, and the people I care about, I wouldn't keep going. I wouldn't need more money. You hit the goal there, to not have to work on anything unless it's something you deeply care about. I can travel now, I can not stress about whether I'll make it this month. Wanting more is so fucking boring.
And as a side note, if I had extra, you could just give people money, and change their lives. Why wouldn't you?
in a way, this IS the worst thing about the rich, or at least it’s a very clear indicator of the worst thing, which is that they have taken money to be an end in itself rather than happiness or anything else that money can facilitate. Money was supposed to be a proxy for well-being, not well-being itself. The ultra-rich, having forgotten or denied this, chase after more money like people who have eaten too much salty food keep eating more when they have no water.
I went on a boat cruise in Florida a few years back. We saw all the mansions owned by the wealthiest of Americans. On the cruise was a woman that used to work as a cleaner at several of the homes. She said she’d never wanted to be rich afterwards. She said that’s all these people worried about was their finances, nothing else. I would imagine most rich people are narcissistic. That’s how they became wealthy. Never caring about anyone but themselves & their bottom line.
