I was invited to start using it yesterday, so I asked a couple of experts if users should trust it. The answer: no, nobody should trust it at this point.

"Over the past few years, there have been more and more stories — some sad, all strange — about people falling in love (and lust) with so-called AI-companions.
As AI tools grow more sophisticated and gain more mainstream acceptance, so too has interest in these digital paramours increased — but these romantic chatbots may be doing more harm than good to the humans that are so attached to them.
In a new study published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, researchers from Brigham Young University found not only that enormous numbers of people are engaging with AI companions, but that many of them seem to be more depressed and lonely than those who don't.
Based on an survey that asked 2,989 respondents, the researchers found that nearly one in five people overall — and a full quarter of young adults aged 18 to 29 — had already used a romance-simulating AI chatbot."

So, this just happened in a café I was in.
At the table next to mine sat a group of 3 women who spoke in English with an American accent. I'm just mentioning that because Germany has strict laws on what you can name your child, so I don't think such a discussion would be had by a German.
One had a small toddler. I'm not good with guessing toddler ages, but she was crawling and shakily trying to stand. She came crawling under my table so the mother came over to pick her up and exchanged a few words. She told me her name was Thalia. I said that's a nice name.
For those who don't know, Thalia is the greek muse of comedy and poetry. It is also the name of a big bookstore chain in Germany.
Some ten minutes later I hear the mother talk about how they chose the name. And I kid you not, the explanation was:
She liked Tabea. Her husband liked Delia. So they "invented" the name T(h?)alia as a compromise. She later found out that it's also the name of a German bookstore chain and found it funny. She even made a joke about how her daughter is named after a bookstore now, so I find it highly unlikely she knew about the greek muse.
So TL:DR - Parents think they are clever and making a "new" potential tragedeigh, end up reinventing ancient greek name.

I remember reading a long time ago about a study where a group of artists were individually taken on a ride in a car and then asked to draw a specific thing after they finished the drive. The experimental group was taken along a route that secretly had images planted on the side of the road related to what they would eventually be asked to draw. They found that while those artists didn’t remember seeing the images, what they drew was clearly influenced by them.
I feel this could be a similar phenomenon. Maybe they’d heard the name Thalia in the past and kinda absorbed it without recognizing it as a normal name because they didn’t know anyone with that name.

To think -- some of us spent all that time and effort in school studying science, history, and math. We thought deeply about ethics and society.
Now, our government and businesses are run by the kids who cheated on all the exams. Our law enforcement and defense are run by the kids who skipped class to drink behind the bleachers. And our health care and science policy are run by the people who ate the crayons.

The problem is that by bankrupting a large country, a few individuals can become immensely rich. Perhaps politics should be populated exclusively by people free of any private interests.

They might make themselves immensely rich for a short period of time, but you can’t gut nation for very long before it withers and dies.
They are already immensely wealthy.
I’m not entirely certain you can get away from private interests. Every group has them.. what can work are egalitarian societies where power flows upwards.
It is a principle of democracy, but clearly the system we have now is ossified.
Plato argues that politics in the polis should be conducted by philosopher-kings – individuals who possess wisdom, knowledge of the Forms, and a love for the Good. These philosopher-kings are uniquely qualified to govern because their reason is dominant over their impulses and desires, allowing them to pursue the true common good of the city. This elite group, selected through a rigorous education system is the only path to a just and stable state
Sure that’s an argument, but as always, it’s whether or not the idea meets with reality.
It is interesting to know that Europeans encountering Native American Society were introduced to the idea of the egalitarianism and reason, and it was only due to the heavy criticism of native Americans of European society what they saw of it in the colonies, that fostered the enlightenment.
The “savages” frowned upon the hierarchy. They saw in European culture, and they found the squabbling in the obsession with money to be something to be avoided. They deliberately chose as long as I could did not get mixed up European ideas of social structure.
And it is interesting to know that a lot of European colonialists went native. Apparently egalitarianism was more agreeable to Europeans.

Since the end of the Cold War, the United States, United Nations Security Council, and European Union have dramatically escalated the use of unilateral coercive measures, or sanctions, in peacetime — an escalation in economic warfare made possible by the fall of the Soviet Union.
In the past few decades, there has been a concerted effort to legitimate sanctions as a lawful instrument to punish nations that refuse to submit to imperialist diktat. Their effects have been brutal. Sanctions have not only claimed millions of lives — recent research shows that, between 1971 and 2021, US and EU sanctions have claimed 38 million lives globally. They have also maintained inequality among nations, preserving the racial hierarchy of the colonial order in the international system.
In Unit 5, we look at sanctions as a weapon of war — and consider the ways in which popular forces in Palestine, Yemen, and elsewhere have inverted the tool against the imperialists themselves.
