Nessuno può vivere con 80 grammi di pane al giorno e una ciotola di zuppa tenuta nei bidoni utilizzati per la benzina. E nessuno accetterebbe di lavarsi in acqua stagnante e infetta pullulante di pidocchi. Nessuno. Eppure il generale Gastone Gambara non era d'accordo.
“Campo di concentramento non vuol dire campo di ingrassamento. E un prigioniero malato è un prigioniero controllabile”, diceva.
Fu lui a supervisionare la creazione e la gestione dei campi di concentramento per gli slavi che combattevano l'occupazione italiana tra il 1940 e il 1943.
E il campo di Rab, Arbe in italiano, era il peggiore di tutti, situato su un'isola dell'Adriatico, oggi rinomata località turistica. Al suo interno, oltre ai partigiani jugoslavi, vi erano centinaia di bambini, donne e anziani, con il campo che arrivò a ospitare tra le 7500 e le 15000 persone.
“Li vuole ammazzare tutti (gli sloveni della regione di Lubiana). Mi permetto osservare che sono un milione. Non importa, risponde deciso: bisogna fare come gli ascari e sterminarli tutti”. Queste le parole di una conversazione tra Galeazzo Ciano e Aldo Vidussoni, segretario del PNF.
Da qui le incursioni, i villaggi bruciati, le esecuzioni sommarie.
E i campi. Stipati in tende, i prigionieri erano esposti a tutte le intemperie. Nel settembre 1942 un'inondazione travolge la zona femminile. Il giorno successivo affiorano uno dopo l'altro i corpi delle donne e i corpicini dei bambini. Sono soprattutto loro a soffrire delle infezioni e delle malattie che colpiscono il campo, nel quale moriranno circa 1500 persone, tra cui un centinaio di bambini sotto i 10 anni. Molti altri moriranno in seguito al trasferimento in altri campi.
Nessuno pagò per gli orrori avvenuti ad Arbe. Gambara morì nel suo letto, senza subire mai processi per quanto avvenuto nei Balcani. Anzi, venne reintegrato nell'esercito nel 1952. E la memoria delle violenze italiane nell'ex Jugoslavia è sparita così, senza troppi problemi, insieme alle nostre responsabilità nel conflitto più brutale della storia umana.

Every day it seems I come on here (the least bad network on the internet I've found) and see pointless spats and name-calling between groups of people whose journeys thru life differ slightly, but who all have their struggles.
Binary thinking is a curse, and zero-sum mentality. Rights are not a pie, and those with different oppressions are not your oppressors.
I'm begging folks to have genuine conversations with people, as people.
I'm still healing, myself. I don't live up to my own standards. 😖

La version "Core" est gratuite, la version "Pro" payante. Y'a quoi dans la version Pro ?
