Early evening run

Back in the Borders having spent a couple of days sorting out various family things. A lovely run - and in the dry, of 12.5k, road. Coming back from Cumbria with torrential rain all the way to the Scottish border we were prepared for a wetting, but it never happened.

US employers added just 22,000 jobs in August and the unemployment rate ticked up to 4.3%, stoking fears of an economic slowdown and solidifying the case for the Fed to deliver the interest-rate cut that Trump wants.

Art College was a poison that embedded that there is a distinction between capital A Art and art for consumption. It's hard to unlearn that, I think.

This took quite a while to experiment, but now that it kinda works, feels pretty cool.

- Still experimental on my local machine (not on dev site)
- Replies are segmented between edit time slots, idea from X mastodon.social/@cheeaun/11499…
- Older revisions slowly get more grayscale and less opaque.

Interesting. Twitter/X scopes replies/comments to specific post revisions.

Post A → 2 comments
Post A edited, becomes Post B → 2 comments are not displayed anymore

It shows the count "2" but not rendering them, until clicking on Edit History and clicking on the previous post that has those replies 🤔

in reply to Chee Aun 🤔

_Or_ we can add a separate “current version” separator, and move all those before the corresponding comments, hmm,
in reply to Roma Komarov

@kizu lol lots of ideas, just need time to experiment 😂 For this current experiment, it gave me a better overview of what kind of edge cases that might happen — I had to disable all links and buttons because everything will break 🙈. It'll also only be enabled if it's *not* a thread.

Btw re: diffs, I know that @Tusky have diff viz for edit history for a few years now 🙇‍♂️

The image features a dark gray background with three circular shapes, two of which are partially filled with a lighter brown color. The text is white and reads: "When the light goes out of the world, everyone ends up in a sundown town." The text is centered and spans the width of the image, with the first line at the top and the second line below it. The overall design is simple and minimalistic, with the text being the primary focus.

Mathematical #cryptography question. Suppose you wish to *store* a very large number (2**40 or more) of messages. All of these messages have the *same* relatively short length, on the order of 2**15 bits, and are to be encrypted with the same symmetric key.

In this regime, how do you size the IV and MAC for some target security level k? Still just k bits each, or does it get more interesting?

in reply to Zack Weinberg

I would look into unique key derivation per message or unique IV and MAC for each message.

Such a large number of texts being ciphered with the same key presents fodder for a fund of attacks. Key re-use is dangerous in such a scenario.

A master key is can be combined with a unique sub key or salt for each message for individual key derivation per message. The unique sub keys can be encrypted with the master key for additional security. Such keys and salts must be RNG sourced.

I read that Nate Silver "Blueskyism" essay and what stands out is that his three primary features of Blueskyism, while certainly present in some conversations here, nowhere near consistently obtain. And one of them, credentialism, seems to in fact almost never.
in reply to Aaron Ross Powell ☸️

I suspect Silver's charge of Bluesky being credentialist is less that people here flash their PhDs around, and more that Silver frequently makes arguments that aren't very good, and they're met with credulity on X, but get pushback from people with expertise here. But expertise isn't credentialism.

I had an idea and some very smart people follow me, so I want someone to tell me why this won’t work:

N body gravitational simulation is hard because of the scaling problem.

So, whenever I’ve built gravity simulation in the past, I’ve used a quadtree and only had bodies in a small search window affect one another. This is, as I understand it, a very common implementation.

But…

What if you used graph theory to establish a more coarse-grained quadtree based on local cliques? Every body could then apply the (theoretically much smaller number of) forces from all of the cliques scaled by their clique’s distance.

Does that work? Is there some obvious overhead I’m not thinking of?

I know it wouldn’t be _perfectly_ accurate… but it _feels_ like it’d be close, at least if you look at the system in aggregate?

in reply to b4ux1t3 #1️⃣

I have half formed ideas of maybe ignoring positional distance and keeping track of “classes” of objects, where objects are disproportionately affected by objects in a larger class and completely unaffected by something that’s two or three classes smaller, but that feels like it’d be a memory hog nightmare.
in reply to b4ux1t3 #1️⃣

And like, even comparing the classes of two objects in a large system would end up being really compute intensive. Even without the positional changes.
