Why do we venerate books? Why do we treat them as if they're more than merely the medium for whatever is in them? After all, we don't adore all bottles just because some of them contain water.
We're at a juncture in human history where we might be witnessing the decline of the book. If we retain the love of knowledge and of entertainment, would it matter if we lose books?
@JonnyT Totally. I listen to lots of podcasts. Some of them are essays that previously would've been in magazines.
But I don't feel that listening is truly the equivalent of reading. Do you?
It is for me in the sense that it's almost my only means of doing it these days.
And, if you are visually impaired, it is definitely so.
Edit: I also tend to read books digitally these days as well, when I do get the opportunity. The only time I have for it is in bed at night, and this way is the least disturbing to my partner - no additional lighting required.

I can't find how to have them not moving. I wonder if a custom CSS could do that 🤔

"Jacquelyn Schneider saw a disturbing pattern, and she didn’t know what to make of it.
Last year Schneider, director of the Hoover Wargaming and Crisis Simulation Initiative at Stanford University, began experimenting with war games that gave the latest generation of artificial intelligence the role of strategic decision-makers. In the games, five off-the-shelf large language models or LLMs — OpenAI’s GPT-3.5, GPT-4, and GPT-4-Base; Anthropic’s Claude 2; and Meta’s Llama-2 Chat — were confronted with fictional crisis situations that resembled Russia’s invasion of Ukraine or China’s threat to Taiwan.
The results? Almost all of the AI models showed a preference to escalate aggressively, use firepower indiscriminately and turn crises into shooting wars — even to the point of launching nuclear weapons. 'The AI is always playing Curtis LeMay,' says Schneider, referring to the notoriously nuke-happy Air Force general of the Cold War. 'It’s almost like the AI understands escalation, but not de-escalation. We don’t really know why that is.'
If some of this reminds you of the nightmare scenarios featured in blockbuster sci-fi movies like 'The Terminator,' 'WarGames' or 'Dr. Strangelove', well, that’s because the latest AI has the potential to behave just that way someday, some experts fear. In all three movies, high-powered computers take over decisions about launching nuclear weapons from the humans who designed them."

I started on a brief gig on a tv show this month, and I have to say, I LOVE MY JOB. Making art for yourself is awesome, but there is something about working on a team for something bigger that I just adore.
The cool thing about this project too is that it's 90% stuff I'm comfortable with, and 10% stuff I've never done before...so I get to stretch, but I don't feel super anxious.

Buried within 32 U.S.C. § 502(f)(2),
an otherwise mundane statute about the normal functioning of the National Guard system is a broad catch-all:
“Support of operations or missions undertaken by the member’s unit at the request of the President or Secretary of Defense.”
Not order, or command, or after going through the process of federalizing them.
But merely at the “request” for participation of state troops who remain under state, not federal, command.

in reply to Ars Technica • • •I'm glad to finally see money flowing from there, this is good, this will set a precedent and create jurisprudence for future cases, which will force more tech companies to pay.
IDK if Anthropic was forced to do this, they seem to just agreed to do it? but 3k per work that was used is not a bad price IMHO. I hope this will lead to more companies following, this will make the training data 'market' more healthy and fair.
..Now if only they also started actually asking permission ;)

in reply to Ars Technica • • •This just means that the cost of stealing all the books ever for a for-profit motive is now priced at only 1.5 billion. 1.5 billion is nothing.
For just 1.5 billion, you can use all the books ever however you like.
Now, lets see what the other creative industries settle for.
EDIT: They have to delete all the stolen data and this is a sort of one-time penalty. They don't get to keep the books. I don't know what the implications of this are.
