BIG MILESTONE! 🎉

We’ve just crossed 100 posts on !videogames@piefed.social.

After a week of building and curating, the community already has 58 subscribers—and it’s only getting started.

I’ve been thinking hard about the kind of place I want this to be. The vision comes down to three things:

  1. Real conversations about games
  2. Minimal memes
  3. Zero outrage culture

I want this community to be about joy—a space for people who actually play video games to share what excites them. Not a dumping ground for culture wars. Not another echo chamber for Gamergate-era nonsense.

Games are for everyone. And everyone should feel comfortable digging deep here. Talk about an obscure Japanese console. Explore weird European PCs. Or break down the craft behind how a game actually got made. That’s the stuff I want to see flourish.

Here’s to the next 100 posts—and beyond. Come join in:

European Union regulators have hit Google with a €2.95bn ($3.5bn) fine for breaching the bloc’s competition rules by favouring its own digital advertising services.

Also: "Any person or company affected by anti-competitive behaviour as described in this case may bring the matter before the courts of the Member States and seek damages."

It has been 0 days since I accidentally asked my (conservative Christian) dad about a sex toy accessory

Woops. I found my Christian parent's "marriage enhancers" in my teens on accident, so I know they are cool with it if I ever sent something to the wife/parent group chat on accident.

🤓 Anthropic recently release a threat report that shows how threat actors are using their model Claude. Here are some of the highlights:

・ Vibe hacking: Criminals are using Claude Code to perform real intrusions, doing reconnaissance, extortion, at a scale that one human alone could not reach

・ Remote worker fraud: North Korean IT workers are simulating professional competence through AI at Fortune 500 companies

・ No-code malware: Threat actors with little technical skill are generating ransomware-as-a-service packages with evasion techniques and selling them for about $400

・ Fraud at scale: Carding stores, romance scams and synthetic identities, AI is embedded across the fraud supply chain and make it even more easy for them

I think it is interesting to see how threat actors are leveraging AI as those patterns are the ones you may want to detect in your future AI systems.

“First of its kind” AI settlement: Anthropic to pay authors $1.5 billion
Settlement shows AI companies can face consequences for pirated training data.

So, a broke student copying a song from a major record label can be fined $150k. But a high _valued_ AI corporation can be fined $3k for stealing a book from a poor author. Have I got that right?
in reply to Ars Technica

$3000 per copyright violation is hardly a deterrent.

It sets a very low price point for theft.

I'll take a look at the latest pixelfed source (with open source, anything is possible!). Their react native app is really helpful in figuring out what api to call.

in reply to fedicat

ah cool to hear! I am not on iOS myself anymore but I installed fedicat on my partners phone just so I can test and play around with the stuff you are working on. You got more support for various fedi platforms then any other client app at this point, its very impressive
in reply to wakest ⁂

@liaizon the diversity and creativity of all these different platforms is what I love about the fediverse (and why I have no interest in bluesky)

Why do we venerate books? Why do we treat them as if they're more than merely the medium for whatever is in them? After all, we don't adore all bottles just because some of them contain water.

We're at a juncture in human history where we might be witnessing the decline of the book. If we retain the love of knowledge and of entertainment, would it matter if we lose books?

in reply to Jonathan T

@JonnyT Totally. I listen to lots of podcasts. Some of them are essays that previously would've been in magazines.

But I don't feel that listening is truly the equivalent of reading. Do you?

in reply to David Njoku

It is for me in the sense that it's almost my only means of doing it these days.

And, if you are visually impaired, it is definitely so.

Edit: I also tend to read books digitally these days as well, when I do get the opportunity. The only time I have for it is in bed at night, and this way is the least disturbing to my partner - no additional lighting required.

"Jacquelyn Schneider saw a disturbing pattern, and she didn’t know what to make of it.

Last year Schneider, director of the Hoover Wargaming and Crisis Simulation Initiative at Stanford University, began experimenting with war games that gave the latest generation of artificial intelligence the role of strategic decision-makers. In the games, five off-the-shelf large language models or LLMs — OpenAI’s GPT-3.5, GPT-4, and GPT-4-Base; Anthropic’s Claude 2; and Meta’s Llama-2 Chat — were confronted with fictional crisis situations that resembled Russia’s invasion of Ukraine or China’s threat to Taiwan.

The results? Almost all of the AI models showed a preference to escalate aggressively, use firepower indiscriminately and turn crises into shooting wars — even to the point of launching nuclear weapons. 'The AI is always playing Curtis LeMay,' says Schneider, referring to the notoriously nuke-happy Air Force general of the Cold War. 'It’s almost like the AI understands escalation, but not de-escalation. We don’t really know why that is.'

If some of this reminds you of the nightmare scenarios featured in blockbuster sci-fi movies like 'The Terminator,' 'WarGames' or 'Dr. Strangelove', well, that’s because the latest AI has the potential to behave just that way someday, some experts fear. In all three movies, high-powered computers take over decisions about launching nuclear weapons from the humans who designed them."
