Joy Division haben im Laufe ihrer kurzen Karriere zwei Peel Sessions aufgenommen, beide im Jahr 1979 und der Zufall wollte es, dass ich die letzte Session zuerst vorstelle. Sie wurde am 26.11.1979 in den Maida Vale Studios in London aufgenommen und am 10.12.1979 gesendet. Joy Division nahmen vier Lieder auf, die sie bis dahin nur live gespielt hatten und von denen noch keine Studioaufnahmen existierten. Das hatten sie bei der ersten Peel Session auch so gehandhabt. Die Songs der zweiten Session waren โTwenty-Four Hoursโ, โColonyโ, โSound Of Musicโ und โLove Will Tear Us Apartโ. Produziert wurde die Session von ihrem Manager Tony Wilson (1950 โ 2007), der auch Inhaber des legendรคren Labels Factory Records war. Verรถffentlicht wurde die Peel Session 1987 auf dem eigenen Label von John Peel, Strange Fruit Records.
โLove Will Tear Us Apartโ und โTwenty-Four Hoursโ bilden die A-Seite der EP, โColonyโ und โSound Of Musicโ die B-Seite. โLove Will Tear Us Apartโ blieb ein Non-Album-Track, die Versionen der 7โณ- und 12โณ-Singles wurden am 08.01.1980 und Anfang Mรคrz 1980 neu aufgenommen. โTwenty-Four Hoursโ und โColonyโ kamen auf das zweite Album โCloserโ, das in der zweiten Mรคrz-Hรคlfte aufgenommen wurde, dabei sang Ian Curtis auch โLove Will Tear Us Apartโ neu ein. โThe Sound Of Musicโ schlieรlich schaffte es in der Aufnahme vom 08.01.1980 auf die Compilation โStillโ, auf der alle unverรถffentlichten Studioaufnahmen sowie das letzte Konzert von Joy Division vom 02.05.1980 und einige weitere Liveaufnahmen zu finden sind. โStillโ erschien am 09.10.1981, genau wie โLove Will Tear Us Apartโ (Juni 1980) und โCloserโ (18.07.1980) postum, denn Sรคnger Ian Curtis nahm sich am 18.05.1980 das Leben, am Vortag der geplanten Abreise fรผr ihre erste USA-Tour. Er wurde nur 23 Jahre alt.

Quitting Twitter was a New Year's resolution for 2025, but I wound up deleting it on December 2, 2024. I'd rarely used it since MuSSk bought it, except to fact check: "Did he really tweet that?!?!"
Yeah, he really did. Ugh. Didn't want to be there anymore.
I was using Twitter since 2006. It was a very cool place back then -- full of nice people, CSS designers, etc. I have gradually stopped using it during the past couple of years. My browser still remembers the login but I am just not opening it. It feels good. (But I do miss some people from Twitter.)

Volgens Peter Wennink is het 1 voor 12 voor de Nederlandse economie en dat geldt grosso modo voor de hele Europese economie. Hoewel het rapport Europa veelvuldig noemt, bevat het nadrukkelijk een Nederlands perspectief. Het is niettemin duidelijk dat Europa een enorme achterstand in de tech heeft op de VS. Dat land heeft ook een groot voordeel ten opzichte van Europa waardoor de techsector zich daar ook beter kon ontwikkelen: een enkele markt en taalgebied. Dat betekent niet technologie uit de VS per se beter is. We zien Meta als een zeer succesvol Big Tech-bedrijf, maar welke innovaties produceerde het die de levensstandaarden van mensen verbeterden? Verslavende, ziekmakende en democratie-ondermijnende applicaties zijn in economische zin eerder schadelijk dan nuttig. Meta is vooral een mediabedrijf dat met dank aan de comparatieve voordelen die de VS eigen zijn, kon onbelemmerd kon uitgroeien tot de oligopolist die het nu is en de beurswaarde kon creรซren waar een kleine groep aandeelhouders van profiteert. Het rapport Wennink toont inzichten die ons vertellen dat we moeten doen wat ze in de VS ook doen. Het probleem is dat het denken over economie zoals Amerikanen dat al vele decennia doen, verouderd is. Sterker: dat denken en handelen heeft er juist voor gezorgd dat bepaalde ondernemingen een omvang konden krijgen die de democratie nu ernstig ondermijnen. In zijn boek 'The Crisis of Democratic Capitalism' toont FT-journalist Martin Wolf waar de talrijke problemen zitten. Wennink heeft dat boek in bezit. Ik zag het op een tafel in zijn "clubhuis" in Veldhoven liggen toen ik hem eerder dit jaar interviewde. Ik heb tot dusverre niet de indruk dat hij iets van de inzichten van Wolf in het rapport terecht heeft laten komen.
Er is volgens mij maar รฉรฉn context denkbaar waarin Nederland op langere termijn een bijdrage kan leveren aan een florerende economie en ook democratie en dat is de Europese. In dat kader biedt Econoom en Nobelprijswinnaar Paul Krugman een nuancerende blik op de achterstand van Europa op de VS. 1 voor 12 is een dramatische voorstelling van zaken en daar gaat Krugman niet in mee. Dat is niet 'fat, dumb en happy', maar getuigt van intelligentie. OMG! Who else recalls the days when HP's (non-HP-UX) minicomputers and their HP-UX workstations used HP-IB (practically the same as GPIB, I think?) to connect external disks, at a glorious 1 MB/s, I think it was? Those stackable connectors were kinda cool.
The evolution of data cabling is amazing. Just some 40 years ago, thick and very unwieldy cables like those in the picture were used to transport measly megabytes per second. Now much thinner cables reach gigabytes per second easily. What are the main technological advances that have enabled this?
