Which is exactly why I’m skeptical about Threads. 🙃

@ezmyrelda @jens I absolutely believe in moderating communities, defederating if need be.

I also believe information should be free and accessible, not held prisoner by a narcissistic maniac who insists that everything be hidden—unless you give him personal information.

There was a case just a few months ago where an amber alert was broadcast on Twitter, and if you weren’t on Twitter, you couldn’t see it—and to me, that’s wrong.

Everything that should be known to the public should be public. Better yet, federated.

If you want to opt out of seeing that info, that’s fair. But it should be public.

@ezmyrelda @jens I’m not on Twitter or Meta—and haven’t been for years. And I’m livid that my government—specifically, the Canadian government—still depends on American companies for public-facing communications when they should be building local social media infrastructure.

But they’re there. They even insist on staying there. And it’s maddening they’re letting Elon Musk restrict such critical information.

Why the hell are Trudeau’s posts on Twitter and not the Fediverse? That should be a scandal.

The Angry Brigade was an anarchist-communist anti-imperialist guerrilla group in the late ’60s, growing from the student anti-war movement and the militant, far left revolutionary groups of Spain to launch a series of bombing campaigns between 1970 and 1972.
in reply to anarchofggt

In every generation, there are young people who take up the task of revolution directly, intensely, and most seriously.

The Brigade was quite clear in their aims; they sought to attack property, not people, and their targets included banks, fascist embassies, and the homes of Conservative MP’s, including then Home Secretary Robert Carr, courts and, as depicted in the film Misbehaviour, a BBC Outside Broadcast van at the 1970 Miss World event.

in reply to anarchofggt

These small bombing campaigns secured media exposure to the demands of their cause and the police estimate that some 25 bombings could be attributed to the group. Collateral damage was kept to a minimum during their ‘campaign of terror’ with only one person suffering slight injuries.
in reply to anarchofggt

The trial of the Stoke Newington cell, ‘the Stoke Newington Eight’, became one of the longest criminal trials in English history, lasting from 30th May to 6th December 1972. Of the eight, John Barker, Jim Greenfield, Hilary Creek and Anna Mendelssohn (who wrote as a poet under the pen name of Grace Lake) were found guilty and sentenced to ten years imprisonment, whilst a further four were acquitted,
in reply to anarchofggt

including Stuart Christie, who had previously been in Spanish gaol for his part in an assassination plot on Franco, and Angela Mason, who went on to become the director of Stonewall, receiving the OBE for her services to LGBT rights in 1999. Jake Prescott, who was the first of the group to be captured and imprisoned in 1971 famously reflected that whilst he was angry, the rest were ‘the slightly cross brigade’.

in reply to anarchofggt

Good thread! Although most of the group would have considered themselves "libertarian communist" rather than anarchist as such. As while they were definitely anarchist-friendly and around the anarchist milieu, their politics came more from Marxism originally, especially the Situationists.

Got tired of drilling CW in MorseMachine, Morsle, and Morse code for Android, and listened in a few times today to see whether I can copy off the air yet.

During the afternoon on 20m, Winter Field Day was in full swing and every CQ I could hear was too fast for me to copy anything after "CQ". (Well, I did copy what sounded like "FDW9" at one point which I assume was related to field day activities) After dark, 80m had some folks with a more leisurely pace. However, signals fading in and out meant that I still had trouble copying call signs. I could at least recognize more characters even if I couldn't copy enough to understand...

I don't have a key yet, so I don't have to feel bad about not transmitting. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it, for a while! 😀

Got half of the keyboard case made. The other half will be trickier, having all the latches and handles, but this is the one that will actually be seen most the time, so I wanted to get it right. Money is going into AT Protocol to build up to what ActivityPub already is

It's a bit VHS vs Betamax, but commercial interests are also going to skew towards AT.
in reply to mattlqx

I really don't see why people are funding a second Protocol. ActivityPub is perfectly fine and be expanded for those few cases it's not enough. I'm glad we at least have a bridge with @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy but that's an opt in thing that users on both sides need to follow. It just kind of sucks that Bluesky and AT Protocol is getting more attention than the Fediverse and ActivityPub knowing we've proven that we can create more than just one platform with our protocol.

My friend just shared the existence of this software with me, and it looks perfect for me. His setup uses docker though, and mine doesn't. The non-docker instructions seem simple enough, but I can't figure out how to install the requirements. The "pip install" complains and says I should use apt, but I can't find most of those requirements in my sources. For example "python3-verboselogs" isn't found. Can someone help? #FAFO Colombia President Petro responds to Trump tariffs: Read his full statement

#FAFO
in reply to kcarruthers

This story as written is deceptive and omits key facts.

#Colombia DID NOT reject repatriation of its citizens. It rejected the landing of military planes and the handling of its citizens in chains as criminals. The norm for repatriation is to deliver people unbound in civilian planes. Colombia upheld its duty to protect the dignity and bodies of its citizens, consistent with international treaties, which the US was violating.

English media is routinely distorting the facts.

#colombia Statement by President Gustavo Petro (thread, 4/?)

"Colombia is the heart of the world, and you’ve failed to understand that. This is the land of yellow butterflies, of the beauty of Remedios, but also of Colonel Aureliano Buendía, and I am one of them, perhaps the last. You may kill me, but I will survive in my people, who existed long before yours, in the Americas. We are people of the winds, the mountains, the Caribbean Sea, and freedom."

#colombia Statement by President Gustavo Petro (thread, 5/?)

"You don’t like our freedom, fine. I won’t shake hands with white enslavers. I will shake hands with white libertarians, heirs of Lincoln, and with the Black and white farm boys of the U.S., at whose graves I wept and prayed on a battlefield I reached after walking through the mountains of Tuscany and surviving COVID. They are the U.S., and before them, I kneel—before no one else"

#colombia Statement by President Gustavo Petro (thread, 6/?)

"Bring me down, President, and the Americas and humanity will respond. Colombia no longer looks to the north; it looks to the world. Our blood comes from the blood of the Caliphate of Córdoba, the civilization of its time, from the Latin Romans of the Mediterranean, the civilization that founded the republic and democracy in Athens. Our blood carries the resilience of Black people enslaved by you."

Via @Pachacutec:

BBC article is rewriting US press release. It omits that #Colombia obtained agreemt from US to ensure deported citizens transported safely, not in chains, w respect for the bodies, dignity, human rts. This was Pres Petro's core demand.

Western media is at this pt consistently framing the agreemt as a unilateral concession by #Colombia and that is false.

And the super rich have also been trying to degrade the UKs access to information too.

in reply to Pachacutec

@Pachacutec @alienghic @_L1vY_

That has been my take as well but it took gleaning tiny bits from multiple news sources.

There still hasn't been a real report on what the deportations will look like going forward.

The main issue was treatment of migrants as criminals in chains. It seems like the US agreed to stop that but still use military planes.

So a compromise by both parties, not a concession by Colombia.

But media only reports the bombastic press releases from the WH.
