Generally it works really well, but every so often, a Plasma process consumes all the RAM causing the PC to lock up. Sometimes it recovers, but the fastest thing to do is a hard reboot.
Any suggestions how I might find out what is going on and how to fix? The PC is usually so nailed, that is it is not possible to run any commands.

sorry, I have no idea. Maybe you coukd troubleshoot connecting to the pc with another one via ssh. If it's locked by load, you should be able to log in and see an htop anyway... If it's a real freeze, this doesn't help.
Anyway, I was writing this message to suggest a different solution: if it's a shared pc and there's no personal data/personal logged account, it's probably a lot more efficient to just use the KDE activities.
