The image features a cartoon character resembling SpongeBob SquarePants, standing in a field filled with numerous skulls. The character has a large, curly afro hairstyle, wide eyes, and an open mouth, displaying a surprised or shocked expression. SpongeBob is wearing a white shirt, red tie, brown shorts, and brown shoes. The background is a sky with clouds, and there are decorative swirls and symbols in the air. The field of skulls is green, and the overall color palette includes vibrant blues, yellows, and reds. The character's pose and expression suggest a reaction to the unusual setting.

I have seen a few posts claiming that talk of mastodon being hard for new users is overblown. They also seem to have a subtext that if someone didn't enjoy their experience of the fediverse, it was their fault. The latter annoys me.
I have also been following Big Tech on Trial's coverage of the ongoing anti-trust case against Meta. This article summarising the FTC's expert witness made me realise something about what is hard about mastodon.
 bigtechontrial.com/p/from-road…
What corporate social media does for you is find the connections that you want for you. With Facebook that is friends and family. With twitter that is the content that you want to see. The price you pay is the ad load, the data harvesting and the distortion in the presentation of the connections/content in favour of the company. The FTC's whole case is that Meta can put that 'price' up without losing users.
I love the fediverse because I don't pay that price. Instead though I have to find the content/connections that I want and, even more laborious, curate my feed. That is not easy. The main feed is a firehose of gubbins and porn. If I shift through it, I might find one or two accounts to follow. The server's feed is a bit more my thing, but it is not super brilliant (for me). By now my feed is pretty good, I got there by the simple of algorithm of following widely and pruning lightly. It took me a while to find that 'one simple trick'. I had to learn how to create filters so that I didn't just see the same content over and over (cat pictures, covid isn't over, Elon Musk is a racist. Your mileage will vary).
None of that was technically complicated. It could be learnt. Advice was passed on. In some sense it isn't hard, but it is a 'price'. I am very happy to pay that price. The benefit is enormous. It is radically different from the proposition that traditional social media has been making since the early days of Facebook. The price trad social media is one you pay passively, except the ads, you do have to learn to ignore ads. It makes sense that the fediverse feels hard to new users.

ICC prosecutor, under investigation, steps aside temporarily
The Hague (AFP) – International Criminal Court (ICC) chief prosecutor Karim Khan will step aside pending the conclusion of an internal probe into a misconduct allegation against him, his office said Friday. The UN Office of Internal Oversight Services started started its investigation in November, with reports saying Khan was accused of sexual misconduct towards a member of his office.
Khan, 55, denies the allegations.
Khan "communicated his decision to take leave until the end" of the UN internal investigation, and his deputy prosecutors will run the office in his absence, it said in a statement.
The British lawyer took up his position with The Hague-based court in June 2021.
Throughout his career -- from courtrooms in England and Wales, to leading cases before international tribunals -- he has faced down controversy for his legal work.
Stints included defending Liberia's former president Charles Taylor against allegations of war crimes in Sierra Leone, Kenya's President William Ruto in a crimes-against-humanity case at the ICC that was eventually dropped, and the son of late Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi, Seif al-Islam.
Khan also secured ICC warrants against Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and senior Hamas figures, over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The ICC investigates and prosecutes genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression. While its rulings are binding on member countries, it lacks the ability to enforce them.
Khan was born in Scotland and studied undergraduate law at King's College, London.
His father was Pakistani, his mother British and he is a member of the minority Ahmadiyya Muslim sect.
He became a practising lawyer in 1992, and went on to cut his teeth in international law at the former Yugoslav and Rwandan war crimes courts from 1997 to 2000.
He later represented survivors and relatives of victims of the 1970s Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia at its UN-backed court in the late 2000s.
His other roles have included a stint at The Hague-based Special Tribunal for Lebanon, set up to bring to justice the killers of Lebanese ex-PM Rafic Hariri in 2005.
I don't buy it.
The alleged misconduct happened in 2023 December. Internal investigation was conducted and closed. Then the allegation was made publically just as arrest warrant was issued for war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu and US promised to retaliate. Patented US handiwork to me.
Even if it were true, that doesn't make the arrest warrant less relevant, but this way all the genocide supporters can pretend they are not the bad guys...

The image is a comic strip titled "NIEZROZUMIALY CZŁOWIEK OPC.1" (The Incomprehensible Man, Option 1). It consists of nine panels, each depicting a scene with a stick figure character interacting with a ticket vending machine.
In the first panel, the character stands in front of the machine, asking for "DWA BILETY ZA TRZY ZŁOTE" (two tickets for three zloty). The second panel shows the character receiving one ticket, with the text "TZN. JEDEN BILET W CENIE TRZECI ZŁOTECH" (meaning one ticket for three zloty). In the third panel, the character, holding the ticket, says "ALE DWA TAKIE BILETY" (but two such tickets).
The fourth panel shows the character holding a 3.00 zloty note, with the text "TAKIE DWA ZA TRZY ZŁOTE? BĘDE STRATNA..." (such two for three zloty? I will be at a loss...). In the fifth panel, the character offers "ALE JA PANI DAM SZĘĆ ZŁOTYCH" (but I will give you six zloty). The sixth panel shows the character saying "A TO NAWET LEPIEJ, BO PRZY ZAKUPIE POWYŻEJ PIĘĆ ZŁOTYCH JEST BILET GRATIS" (this is even better, because with a purchase above five zloty, there is a free ticket).
In the seventh panel, the character requests "W TAKIM RAZIE PROSZĘ TRZY BILETY ZA SZĘĆ ZŁOTYCH" (in that case, please give me three tickets for six zloty). The eighth panel shows the character lying on the ground, with the text "I JEDEN GRATIS..." (and one free...). The final panel shows a hand holding three 6.00 zloty tickets.
The comic humorously illustrates a misunderstanding about ticket pricing, leading to an unexpected outcome.

The ancient Romans were masters of building and engineering. Even today one of their structures, the Pantheon, is still intact nearly 2,000 years after it was built, a long time for concrete to last. Researchers from MIT may now know why. @ScienceAlert has the story:

Anoche le conté a Pato del sueño que tuve donde conocíamos al Che. Y cantamos juntos la canción de la Adarga al brazo de Frank Delgado, que se la canto desde que era un bebé.
Me preguntó quién era Camilo y quién era Changó.

A thing I really didn't expect in this parliament was that the UK's immigration debate would get more *weird and stupid*. More anti-immigration, yeah, I expected that, that always happens when we have a Labour government. But more detached from 'actual countries', I did not expect that.

At ~$5/mo per user that's a prospectus of $40 million annually. If I were a VPN provider I would absolutely want a piece of that pie rather than not, and all's they have to do is follow the law--exactly as they have been this entire time...
So yeah, I absolutely think they're going to comply.
NuraShiny [any]
in reply to Xanza • • •The population of just Europe, Canada and the USA is a combined is over 1 billion. I would say those are the most common countries where people pay for VPNs.
Let's say one billion flat minus France. If just 1% of those people subscribe to a VPN at 5$/month, that's 1.2 billion dollars annually.
Who would you rather alienate, assuming they would have to alienate one or the other?
The could also just see where you are connecting from and disable this feature for just french connections. Steam can do it for NSFW games in Germany.
