The City Has Eyes (8 Photos)

From an earthquake detection “kit” in a school hallway to a trash bin channeling Cookie Monster, googly eyes have quietly become one of the most playful forms of street-level intervention. This collection brings together eight clever, charming, and unexpected urban artworks from around the world — where a pair of eyes is all it takes to give life to objects, trees, and everyday structures. Featuring moments from sidewalks, forests, parks, and roundabouts, this is public art at its most fun.

A purple trash bin styled as Cookie Monster with large googly eyes on top and a real cookie placed at the bin's opening, on a city sidewalk.

Cookie Monster Bin

A blue trash bin with white googly eyes becomes a comical likeness of Cookie Monster, especially with a real cookie placed just inside the opening like a mouth. The transformation invites smiles from passersby and encourages playful interaction with public infrastructure.

A bright yellow paper labeled "EARTHQUAKE DETECTION KIT" taped to a hallway wall with two googly eyes attached below the text.

Earthquake Detection Kit

A neon yellow sign taped to a beige brick wall reads “Earthquake Detection Kit,” with a pair of wobbling googly eyes stuck below the text. A tongue-in-cheek joke, it turns an otherwise dull wall into a moment of humor.

A tree stump on a rocky lakeside with large googly eyes attached, making it resemble a creature with twisted root-like limbs.

Tree Stump Creature

A weathered tree stump near a lake is brought to life with two oversized googly eyes. Its gnarled roots resemble crawling limbs, making the stump appear like a wide-eyed forest creature peeking out from the shoreline.

A brown perforated metal sphere sculpture on a rock pedestal, with googly eyes added to the front, placed near a road in Bend, Oregon.

Staring Sculpture

A perforated spherical sculpture at a roadside location in Bend, Oregon has had a pair of googly eyes added. The eyes give the metal orb an expressive, animated look that humorously contrasts its abstract, static design.

A concrete bollard on a sidewalk with a large crack resembling an open mouth, enhanced by googly eyes to look like Pac-Man.

Pac-Man Bollards – By Vanyu Krastev

A cracked concrete traffic bollard shaped like a ball is transformed into a character resembling Pac-Man with the simple addition of two googly eyes. The mouth-like crack and playful gaze give personality to the damaged structure.

A tree growing through a metal fence with two googly eyes attached to the bars, forming a face with a bark mouth and nose-like stub.

Tree Hug – By Vanyu Krastev

A tree growing through a metal fence is given a whimsical face using googly eyes placed on the bars. The tree’s growth forms a natural mouth-like shape that, combined with a stub resembling a nose, creates a surprisingly expressive character.

A large evergreen tree in a park fitted with two giant white inflatable eyeballs near the top, creating a monster-like appearance.

Giant Tree Monster

A tall evergreen tree is turned into a towering creature using two oversized inflatable eyeballs. The result is a hilarious and surreal visual that transforms an ordinary tree into a cartoonish park guardian.

Bronze sculpture of a doe and fawn in a landscaped roundabout in Bend, Oregon, both fitted with oversized googly eyes, creating a humorous contrast with their naturalistic forms.

Deer Sculpture Surprise

A bronze sculpture of a mother deer and her fawn is playfully transformed with large googly eyes. The addition gives the pair a startled, cartoon-like expression, making this realistic public artwork suddenly feel animated and silly.

With just two plastic eyes, artists and pranksters around the world are giving personality to the inanimate. These small interventions highlight the joy of noticing the overlooked and reshaping the mundane. Whether it’s a trash bin, tree, or bollard, nothing is safe from being googly-eyed — and we’re all better for it.

Sadly, this analysis of the UK's entry for Eurovision illustrates what happened last night. We watched much of the contest; I love the song, but it wasn't a Eurovision winner for all the reasons the article sets out, summarised: "Remember Monday were good, but were they good enough to make your personal Top 10?". With zero points, it just didn't connect with the global audience. At least the jury liked it, kind of, with 88 points 🤔

Eva Wiseman (Observer) makes an interesting connection between the decline in charity shop profits, the rise in services like Vinted or DePop & the costs of childcare forcing mums to stay at home (and make a bit of money on the side by selling second hand clothes).

Moreover, Wiseman asks: if we're just selling on Vinted for a bit of fun wouldn't it better to let the charity shops retain their part in that market for good causes?

#clothing #charity

observer.co.uk/news/columnists…

in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May

Something to consider is that Vinted etc have advantages over charity shops for the buyers

My sister uses Vinted to buy her kids' clothes, and she can do it on her phone, while breastfeeding. See items from all over the country, filtered by age and type.

To do the same at a charity shop, she'd have to go in person, bringing the babies with her, which is very challenging

in reply to Patsy (she/her)

@patsytheshark

Although she could buy from Oxfam Online, of course, which does have a lively and extensive clothing section

in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May

@patsytheshark
My daughter buys from charity shops then sell s it on vinted. Cash for charity shops, cash for her.
in reply to Mark Burton

@markhburton @patsytheshark

Yes, this is included in the article as a common strategy... classic bit of arbitrage, of course

in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May

@patsytheshark
It's also not new.
"The image of an entrepreneurial mum starting a secondhand-clothes business says more about [poverty, exploitation, exclusion - I paraphrase and generalise] than it does about decluttering or sustainability or opportunity."

My great grandmother, in the 1890s, after they lost the farm due to debts, and then her husband fled, tried a number of ventures including selling second-hand clothes.
Plus ça change.

in reply to Mark Burton

@markhburton @patsytheshark

yes, our capitalism is not nearly as afar for the C19th as many seem to think.... indeed, its heading back there pretty fast

in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May

For the farm was lost, at least in part due to price competition from North Ametican wheat, grown on prairies where the buffalo and first nations once roamed.

Interesting analysis of the weird discrepancy between public sentiment and the public vote at #Eurovision last night. Dr Kevin Cunningham, a lecturer in politics at Dublin, talks about "diffuse alternatives" and the amplifying effect of the possibility of voting 20 times, when even a small percentage of the voters are voting entirely based on a single issue.

rte.ie/brainstorm/2024/0513/14…

in reply to s1m0n4

@s1m0n4 The article was about last year's contest, which had similarly strong public votes for Israel.
in reply to Rupert Curwen

ahhh, my mistake then!

I have to admit I am quite baffled by the votes given to Israel. I suspect a group of rich supporters maxing out 20 votes per credit card and using different cards to achieve that.

Why we would allow 20 votes per card is beyond my understanding. It used to be 5 votes a few years ago.

#Eurovision

in reply to s1m0n4

@s1m0n4 I'm guessing it's down to the squeezed funding of EBU members, so they have to try any trick that can help make it profitable.
in reply to s1m0n4

@s1m0n4 Sounds very unlikely. You would need thousands of credit cards in dozens of countries. A much more likely explanation: 5% of the voters using their 20 votes to vote for one single country has a lot of power, as the other 95% spread their votes among the 24 other countries
rte.ie/brainstorm/2024/0513/14
in reply to Dag Hjermann

@dagh because of the diaspora Jews are a population that is widespread all around the world. And it's quite unique. I don't think it's unlikely at all.
in reply to s1m0n4

@s1m0n4 No. In my country, Norway, there are almost no jews (around 1000 I think) but Israel still came number two among Norwegian viewers votes (if I remember correctly). But some christians support Israel strongly (around 5% perhaps), and in addition many sympathised with the Israeli singer that was booed by the public
in reply to Dag Hjermann

@dagh yes, that could be an explanation as well! It wasn't right to boo the artist and this may have triggered a reaction among voters.

What are the benefits of procurement software in a growing business setup?

I’ve been exploring tools that can help automate purchasing and vendor-related tasks. I keep hearing about the benefits of procurement software, especially for businesses that are scaling. I want to understand how it helps in streamlining operations, reducing errors, or improving vendor management. If anyone here has practical experience using one, what kind of changes did you notice? Is it worth the switch from spreadsheets?
in reply to zackrider

Are you talking about an ERP system like SAP? If so it’s all about data collection of business operations. Sure you make some no brainer decisions to do things that are practical but it always devolves into “how much did this improve the bottom line?” You start to get data on what business has the highest margins in sales and what products are proving to be a PITA to the bottom line due to customer support eating through labor.

spreadsheets are good but you start hitting walls when the company expands. Suddenly Purchasing managers are making entries to a file, but simultaneously works in production are changing the same file to reflect what they consumed in production. You then start auditing things and don’t know what the QTY row numbers mean. Is that actual inventory? Is that a mix of inventory on order? does this reflect what the production consumed today? if so when?

It gets messy without the right tools when the company scales.
