Wenn Lars oder mich mit unserem Fediverse T-Shirt spazieren gehen, ernten wir nur verstรคndnislose Blicke. Wรคhrend sich 1,6 Millionen Menschen im Fediverse tummeln, vergnรผgen sich Milliarden auf Plattformen von Meta, X und anderen Tech-Giganten, die unsere Demokratie systematisch zerlegen. Drei รคltere Mรคnner schwรคrmen beim #9vor9 von dezentralen Netzwerken, wรคhrend die Jungen auf YouTube und TikTok sind.
Dobusch warnt zurecht: โWir mรผssen aufpassen, dass wir das nicht zu einer Generationen-Rentnersocial machen.โ Es braucht vor allem attraktive Inhalte, die fรผr jung und alt interessant sind. Dabei muss die Technik des Fediverse gar nicht fรผr alle verstรคndlich sein. Genau wie E-Mail. Wer weiร schon, wie E-Mail funktioniert? Niemand. Trotzdem nutzt es jeder. Dobusch verweist auf die historische Rolle der Hochschulen bei der Verbreitung von E-Mail und sieht darin ein Vorbild fรผr das Fediverse. Wenn man die Fediverse-Instanzen der Unis noch den Studierenden รถffnen, kรคmen auch mehr junge Leute in Kontakt mit Pixelfed, Peertube, Element. Friendica, Mastodon und all den Werkzeugen des Fediverse.
Unis und Forschung sollen Fediverse bekannt machen
Derzeit ist das Fediverse noch ein Nischenprojekt, doch Dobusch sieht darin bewusst keinen Nachteil. Er vergleicht die aktuelle Situation mit der Frรผhzeit des Internets: โDas Fediverse versprรผht early Internet Vibesโ. Das Internet kam von Unis, war nicht kommerziell, und sah hรคsslich aus. Diese Parallele ist bewusst gewรคhlt, denn sie verdeutlicht das Potenzial dezentraler Strukturen, die sich organisch entwickeln kรถnnen. Universitรคten und Forschungseinrichtungen kรถnnten als Katalysator erneut eine wichtige Rolle spielen.
An der Universitรคt Innsbruck, wo Dobusch tรคtig ist, funktioniert dieses Konzept bereits: 5.000 Beschรคftigte kรถnnen sich mit ihrem regulรคren Uni-Account ins Fediverse einloggen. Diese Single Sign-On-Lรถsung eliminiert eine der grรถรten Hรผrden fรผr die Fediverse-Nutzung โ die komplizierte Registrierung und Instanzwahl.
Kritische Masse heiรt nicht 90 % aller Nutzenden erreichen
Dobusch sieht Universitรคten und andere Bildungsinstitutionen als Schlรผssel, um eine kritische Masse zu erreichen: Sie kรถnnen nicht nur Instanzen betreiben, sondern auch โMenschen mitbringenโ und so das Netzwerk beleben. Erst durch die breite Nutzung an Unis wurde E-Mail zum Massenmedium. Die kritische Masse ist fรผr Dobusch nicht nur eine Frage der Nutzerzahl, sondern auch der aktiven Beteiligung und der Qualitรคt des Austauschs. Erst wenn genรผgend Menschen und Institutionen teilnehmen, entfaltet das Netzwerk seinen gesellschaftlichen Wert. Kritische Masse heiรt dabei nicht, dass die Mehrheit der Bevรถlkerung im Fediverse sein muss, doch muss es eine erkleckliche Anzahl an Nutzerinnen und Nutzern geben.
Durch ARD/ZDF-Mediatheken Inhalte und Leute ins Fediverse bringen
Noch vielversprechender hinsichtlich einer mรถglichen kritischen Masse und vor allem attraktiver Inhalte, ist die Entwicklung rund um die Mediatheken der รถffentlich-rechtlichen Medien. Dort vollziehe sich ein bemerkenswert schneller Wandel, der in der รถffentlichen Wahrnehmung oft untergehe. Innerhalb weniger Jahre haben sich die Anstalten von zehn eigenstรคndigen Mediatheken zu einer gemeinsamen Plattform entwickelt, Single Sign-On รผber Sendergrenzen hinweg eingefรผhrt und mit dem Streaming OS eines der grรถรten Open Source-Projekte Deutschlands initiiert.
Der Public Spaces Incubator, ein internationales Forschungsprojekt unter Beteiligung von ARD und ZDF, entwickelt derzeit drei innovative Prototypen fรผr demokratische Online-Diskussionen. Der โComments Sliderโ ermรถglicht nuancierte Meinungsรคuรerungen jenseits binรคrer Ja/Nein-Entscheidungen, die โPublic Square Viewโ schafft gemeinsame Erlebnisse fรผr junge Zielgruppen, und โRepresenting Perspectivesโ etabliert rollenbasierte Diskussionsformate. Das Revolutionรคre an diesen Ansรคtzen ist ihre geplante Integration ins Fediverse รผber das ActivityPub-Protokoll.
Die Vision der offenen Mediatheken
Dobuschs zentrale Forderung zielt auf eine grundlegende รffnung der Mediatheken ab. Millionen Menschen loggen sich tรคglich in die ARD- und ZDF-Mediatheken ein, werden aber fรผr Diskussionen รผber Inhalte zu kommerziellen Plattformen wie YouTube weitergeleitet. Diese Logik kritisiert Dobusch als kontraproduktiv: Statt die Nutzer wegzuschicken, sollten die Mediatheken selbst zu lebendigen Diskussionsrรคumen werden.
Seine Vision geht weit รผber einfache Kommentarfunktionen hinaus. Er schlรคgt ein mehrstufiges รffnungskonzept vor, das von der Einfรผhrung von Kommentarmรถglichkeiten รผber nutzergenerierten Playlists bis hin zur Integration von Inhalten aus Kultureinrichtungen und Universitรคten reicht. Diese Entwicklung wรผrde die Mediatheken von Netflix-Kopien zu einem รถffentlich-rechtlichen Pendant zu YouTube transformieren โ allerdings ohne die toxische Kommentarkultur kommerzieller Plattformen.
Dobusch macht keine falschen Versprechungen รผber die Geschwindigkeit dieser Transformation. Er gesteht ein, dass โdie Ungeduld berechtigt istโ, betont aber gleichzeitig die enormen Fortschritte der letzten Jahre. Die รถffentlich-rechtlichen Anstalten haben diese Entwicklungen โim laufenden Betrieb ohne zusรคtzliches Geldโ gestemmt, wรคhrend sie gleichzeitig mit Beitragsstagnation und politischem Druck umgehen mussten.
Was ist jetzt zu tun?
Aus Dobuschs Analyse ergeben sich klare Handlungsempfehlungen fรผr verschiedene Akteure. Universitรคten sollten eigene Mastodon-Instanzen aufbauen und ihren Mitgliedern den Zugang zu dezentralen Netzwerken ermรถglichen. Die รถffentlich-rechtlichen Medien mรผssen ihre Mediatheken fรผr Fediverse-Kommentare รถffnen und ihre Open Source-Initiativen vorantreiben. Bรผrger wiederum kรถnnen ihre Communities zum Fediverse-Einstieg motivieren und konstruktive Forderungen an die รถffentlich-rechtlichen Medien stellen.
Die Botschaft ist klar: Digitale Souverรคnitรคt entsteht nicht von selbst, sondern erfordert bewusste Entscheidungen und gemeinsame Anstrengungen. Das Fediverse mag heute noch ein Nischenprojekt sein, aber es kรถnnte der Grundstein fรผr eine demokratische Digitalzukunft werden โ wenn die relevanten Akteure jetzt handeln, bevor das Zeitfenster sich schlieรt. โDurchs Reden kommen die Leute zusammenโ, sagt er zum Abschluss. I asked for a little decency. Instead, she doubled down.
Thereโs nothing admirable about using someoneโs grief as a platform to push your identity politics, especially when you have zero connection to their family. Thereโs a time and a place for these debates. This wasnโt it.
