Yeah, it's not about whether Vance would be a better person but whether he would be less popular with Trump's electoral base.
If Trump voters see Vance as just another random politician, it might cause Republican splits and damage politically (we can only hope!). If the threat of being primaried is taken away, Republican politicians may revert to all kinds of feuds over who is the "true heir" to Trump.
This is one of the weaknesses of a cult of personality, when the personality dies it's never clear if anyone can take their place and it can lead to instability.
