“What’ll we do with ourselves this afternoon?” cried Daisy, “and the day after that, and the next thirty years?”

“Don’t be morbid,” Jordan said. “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.”

30% of all word-based domain extensions are managed by 1 large corporation in the United States.

The biggest words based corporation was called Donuts Inc — A corporation that for the longest time went unnoticed because the name is not what it implies. They eventually became Identity Digital Inc, which is owned by Ethos Capital.

Ethos Capital is one of the larger investment and capital marketing companies in the country, which is located in my state of Massachusetts, USA.

The second-largest corporation for words based domains was Afilias Inc, which also was bought out by Identity Digital Inc. Which, once again, is owned by Ethos Capital.

Nearly every word-based domain is sponsored and governed by a corporation. The majority of those are in the United States. But Identity Digital Inc, which is owned by Ethos Capital, controls a large sum of them, and you can see the full list on Wikipedia (see URL).

I thought it would be funny to take a picture where my arm is coming out of this opening in a brick wall. It kind of looks like I cut and pasted my arm there, but it's just me doing weird things in public. #photography #urbanphotography

I just tried to watch #Ronja the Robber's Daughter (made by Goro Miyazaki). I really love the book by Astrid Lindgren, so I thought maybe the show would be fun too! but I was honestly creeped out by the animation style. the CGI was not good.

also (this is very American of me but) the pacing was sooo slow. I did not make it thru the first episode.

One thing I keep running into with any form of self-hosting:
STARTING it is every bit as easy as promotors of self-hosting claim it is. Yeah, spinning up a Wordpress instance is easy and rewarding, as is writing a bit of HTML by hand, or any other solution really.

CONTINUING to do it, while maintaining and securing whatever solution you're using, is hard.

in reply to Reinder Dijkhuis Does Art

I think writing HTML by hand is the easiest option by far. Fewest security holes. For something like a webcomic where there are a lot of similar pages, it does get incredibly tedious.

WP is never easy, and always bloated ;D

I've used Grawlix and a custom CMS for my webcomics, but for my next one I think I'm going to go for something entirely static, possibly hand-coded (unlike a massive existing archive like yours, a new webcomic allows for a comfy pace of adding pages).

in reply to eishiya

I've been doing this so long, apparently, that I've gone through the "professional" options right back to the "amateur" ones because they just work better and are easier to maintain, even if they do require more manual work. For a personal site, I don't need to rush.
in reply to eishiya

@eishiya
A solution that can work reasonably well as a compromise between completely hand-coding a website and a CSM like WordPress is static site generation. This gives pretty much the same security as a static site, but it reduces the strain of replicating all the boilerplate by hand.

I'm not sure if there's SSGs specifically tuned for webcomics, though.

in reply to eishiya

@eishiya I'm kind of in the same place, at least for some things. I wouldn't want to hand-code a new site for Rogues of Clwyd-Rhan and started to get away from that by the time that reached 100 episodes (it's at over 1200 now); for something like that, I need automation and cross-referencing, and Wordpress* fits that need best.
But for a new project, like a gag comic with a (honestly) short life expectancy, hand-coding is a better option.

* with static exports, no live instance online.

in reply to Oblomov

@oblomov Pain in the ass to use on larger archives unless you pay for incremental exports, though.

Actually, that's the worst part of the Wordpress ecosystem: so many things are free-until-indispensible.

Euer NOCadmin

in reply to NOCadmin

@normjess
The very fact of a system of exchange system privileges whomever is most able to say no. Max Weber and others have pointed out that this inherently exacerbates economic inequality, ultimately leaving workers destitute while a few get rich.

Admittedly, Weber attributed this to capitalism, but the logic of his argument applies to *any* market system.

The only way to avoid it is to start with a perfectly level playing field and somehow--impossibly--to keep that field level.

Economics that works, then, applies the maxim from the Communist Manifesto: To each according to their need, from each according to their ability.

in reply to GhostOnTheHalfShell

@benfell @normjess
It is extremely interesting stuff because it makes it brutally and very simply clear what is necessary to create and defend an equal society.

Socially it hinges on a moral system. And if you notice the moral system of capitalism is mercenary, it’s psychopathic. Every man seeks mastery in the world of slaves.

So...coming out of my patch test, the big change is that I need to remove amidoamine from my products.

In combination with my fragrance allergy, this is proving to be very difficult.

Amidoamine is pretty much everything in the ingredient list that is "...amine" or "...betaine" and more.

Doc gave me a special app to help.

I have to replace a lot of stuff *again*.

In just a few years I have gone from being a beauty junkie with no fewer than 4 shampoos and conditioners in my shower and up to 7 products in my hair on any given day to being grateful to continue to have *A* hairspray that I can use.

"In the nearly two years since Israel’s assault on Gaza began, at least initially in response to the Hamas attack on 7 October, over 60,000 Palestinians have been killed. Entire cities lie in ruins, starvation is widespread, and a growing chorus of international legal experts warn of a looming genocide. Despite this, the European Union continues its preferential trade and research partnership with Israel under the EU–Israel Association Agreement — an agreement that is conditional on respect for human rights. Calls to suspend it are growing across Europe, yet EU institutions have so far declined to act.

Marc Botenga, Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from the Workers’ Party of Belgium (PTB/PVDA) and Vice-Chair of the Left group in the European Parliament, has been a leading critic of the EU’s response to Israel’s actions in Gaza and the occupation of Palestinian territory. In April 2025, he proposed a resolution on the immediate suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement with a group of fifteen MEPs. Recently, he spoke with the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation’s Alexandra Gerasimcikova about his views and the next political steps the Left in Europe can take."

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem fires 24 FEMA IT staffers, including the CIO and CISO; DHS says they failed security protocols and let hackers access Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) networks

cross-posted from: programming.dev/post/36577114

FEMA Chief Information Officer (CIO) Charles Armstrong, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) Gregory Edwards, and 22 other FEMA IT employees directly responsible were immediately terminated.

While conducting a routine cybersecurity review, the DHS Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) discovered significant security vulnerabilities that gave a threat actor access to FEMA’s network. The investigation uncovered several severe lapses in security that allowed the threat actor to breach FEMA’s network and threaten the entire Department and the nation as a whole.

The entrenched bureaucrats who led FEMA’s IT team for decades resisted any efforts to fix the problem. Instead, they avoided scheduled inspections and lied to officials about the scope and scale of the cyber vulnerabilities.

Failures included: an agency-wide lack of multi-factor authentication, use of prohibited legacy protocols, failing to fix known and critical vulnerabilities, and inadequate operational visibility.

FEMA spent nearly half a billion dollars on IT and cybersecurity measures in Fiscal Year 2025 alone and delivered virtually nothing for the American people. Despite burning hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars, FEMA’s IT leadership still neglected its basic duties and exposed the entire Department to cyberattacks.

Despite burning hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars, FEMA’s IT leadership still neglected its basic duties and exposed the entire Department to cyberattacks.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem fires 24 FEMA IT staffers, including the CIO and CISO; DHS says they failed security protocols and let hackers access Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) networks

Libertarians must be obsessed about liberty now.

Talk to people everywhere. Pass out flyers. Print out business cards. Make a website. Start a newspaper. Rent a billboard. Make songs and movies about freedom.

You might be the last one defending freedom, but you must live with your conscience.

I’d love to see their evaluation of how much this will save, plus their evaluation of what the costs would be to switch to another system if it all goes pear shaped. Plus of course data privacy etc etc.

This frightens the hell out of me.

Social work already was under invested in and I grew up not trusting social workers.

Anyone who remembers various social work decisions that turned into a scandal will I suspect, be incredibly worried about this becoming a norm.

@onepict
Presumably by the time something goes wrong with local government decisions, the people responsible have moved on? (In some cases with brown envelopes to fall back on...)

Is there any precedent for holding government decision makers legally responsible after they've changed jobs?

US | FCC rejects calls for cable-like fees on broadband providers

The FCC says it doesn't have the budget or the manpower to enforce new regulatory fees on other sectors.

Set aside all of the issues that may or may not come with the new round of '26 Apple OS's. Someone should start and maintain a running list of all of the bugs across the platforms that Apple doesn't care to fix. #Apple #Tech
