Would it be realistic to use x264 as the codec of choice for Jellyfin for the next few years?
I happened to receive two Quadro K4000 3GB cards, which I've read are capable of handling at least 5x 1080p60 streams. Those old cards can't do anything newer though (not even x265 or VP9). Not sure if I want to use them in a family server for media transcoding or a "retro" gaming rig. 🤔

"Add it all up, and time is not on the data center's side. The finance guru estimates that the "AI datacenters to be built in 2025 will suffer $40 billion of annual depreciation, while generating somewhere between $15 and $20 billion of revenue."
In other words, new data centers have a very tiny runway in which to achieve profits that currently remain way out of reach. By Kupperman's projections, a brand new data center will quickly become a Theseus' ship made up of some of the most expensive technology money can buy. If a new data center doesn't start raking in mountains of cash ASAP, the cost to maintain its aging parts will rapidly overtake the revenue it can bring in.
Given the current rate at which tech companies are spending money without much return — a long-term bet that AI will all but make human labor obsolete — Kupperman estimates that revenue would have to increase ten-fold just to break even. Anything's possible, of course, but it doesn't seem like a hot bet.
"I don’t see how there can ever be any return on investment given the current math," he wrote."

"Taco Bell is rethinking its use of artificial intelligence (AI) to power drive-through restaurants in the US after comical videos of the tech making mistakes were viewed millions of times.
In one clip, a customer seemingly crashed the system by ordering 18,000 water cups, while in another a person got increasingly angry as the AI repeatedly asked him to add more drinks to his order.
Since 2023, the fast-food chain has introduced the technology at over 500 locations in the US, with the aim of reducing mistakes and speeding up orders.
But the AI seems to have served up the complete opposite.
Taco Bell's Chief Digital and Technology Officer Dane Mathews told The Wall Street Journal that deploying the voice AI has had its challenges.
"Sometimes it lets me down, but sometimes it really surprises me," he said.
He said the firm was "learning a lot" - but he would now think carefully about where to use AI going forwards, including not using it at drive-throughs."

in reply to Natasha Nox 🇺🇦🇵🇸 • • •you mean H.264? IIRC x264 is a CPU implementation of a H.264 encoder. I'd say yeah, it should be a reasonably safe choice. It's almost ridiculously popular and upgrade cycles are often enough slow to span years to guarantee it some lifetime.
Unless, well, a major breakthrough in video encoding happens in the meantime, but that's always a looming threat I guess.
