In the US, police can collect "evidence" in the course of investigating crimes. In a way a heap of cash could be evidence of a crime. However they simply get to keep this cash (it goes to the police station that takes it and perhaps some disappears along the way some of the time) this creates a perverse incentive to just take any cash from anyone they think they can get away with snatching it from.

This isn't a one off. If you look at the comments you can find similar stories of people who had sums like this taken by the police, but were never charged with a crime. As the news story shows it cost about 15k for him to get the cash back, so only people with some means can bother and lawyers won't do it probono.
Really there should be a default that if cash is seized without evidence you get it back ten fold plus legal fees.

The problem started with the courts accepting the lie that this is not a Fifth Amendment taking without due process but instead an action against the money. This is bullshit. But since the courts have endorsed this lie, it is up to state legislatures and Congress to fix it.
@fuchsi It’s scary. I first heard of this some years back when cops pulled a car over for some ridiculous reason, then searched it. A kid was driving across the country for university and had cash for tuition. Cops said they were keeping it because of “suspected drug money.” Apparently this is how some departments fund themselves. Which sounds like banana republic crap.
It's just theft. It's not a mistake. It's not like they really think they are going after serious criminals, all they seem to look at is if the person has the means to fight back and if they fall into a profile that will allow enough of the public to turn a blind eye.

Microsoft ha negato che l’ aggiornamento di sicurezza di Windows 11 di agosto sia collegato a reclami di massa relativi a guasti dei dispositivi di archiviazione. L’indagine è stata avviata in seguito alle segnalazioni di utenti che, dopo l’installazione della patch KB5063878, hanno affermato che i loro SSD e HDD hanno iniziato a guastarsi o a danneggiare i dati.
L’azienda ha ammesso di essere a conoscenza di tali incidenti e di aver raccolto informazioni dai clienti interessati. Tuttavia, test interni e dati di telemetria non hanno confermato un aumento di guasti o danneggiamenti dei file. Anche i controlli congiunti con i produttori di dispositivi di archiviazione non hanno evidenziato una connessione tra l’aggiornamento e i problemi.
I primi a segnalare i malfunzionamenti sono stati gli utenti giapponesi. This is called the “welfare state” and it is, as a factual matter, how low-poverty countries come to be that way.

- Children receive a monthly child benefit check, child care, pre-k, K–12 education, among other things. - Elderly receive an old-age pension. - Disabled receive disability benefits. - Students receive tuition subsidies, living stipends, and subsidized loans. - Carers receive paid leave and home care allowances. - Unemployed receive unemployment benefits.

If you ever see a job ad asking people to bring a C2 certificate for a language, and they're not looking for a language teacher or a translator, run!
They're absolutely trying to filter out foreigners by assuming that native speakers attain C2 automatically and don't need to go through the tests. But C2 includes so many skills that most native speakers don't fully attain. Most native speakers end up in B2 to C1 depending on education level (and yes that's a lil fucked up too)
