GHOST OF THE DICED STEAK just dropped on Steam yesterday—and it might be one of the strangest puzzle platformers I’ve ever laid eyes on.
I can’t even tell you if it’s “good” in the conventional sense. But with a premise this off-the-wall, how could I not bring it up? And honestly, my words won’t do it justice, so here’s Steam’s own copy:
This is a game where you control a diced steak and aim for the goal located deep within each stage. But it’s not just any diced steak. This steak has the power to create ghosts. These ghosts replicate your past actions and can be strategically used to overcome obstacles.
Yeah. You’re literally a cube of marbled beef spawning ghost clones of yourself. The ghosts come in two flavors: ones you summon on command, and ones that appear when you die. Stack those right and you can pull off not just double jumps—but triple and even quadruple jumps with the right timing. It’s absurd.
The structure is simple: one big stage broken into six areas, fourteen checkpoints in total. Depending on your patience, you’re looking at somewhere between 1–5 hours of playtime. Four difficulties (Easy, Normal, Hard, and the wonderfully named “1STEAK”) keep it spicy, with skins that unlock as you climb.
And because you’re still meat, you cook if you touch hot surfaces. Go from rare to well-done and it’s game over. Stay pink in the middle if you want to make it to the end.
Price? About three bucks (C$3.89 here). Controller support? Both Xbox and PlayStation gamepads work fine. Features beyond that? Pretty sparse.
But come on: a physics-driven steak platformer with ghost mechanics, designed by a Japanese dev, retailing for the cost of a coffee. Ever since Steam caught on in Japan, we’ve been getting these gloriously unhinged little experiments. Diced steak as a protagonist? Sure. Ghosts of diced steak? Now you have my full undivided attention.

Jag tror att det var mycket information, men att mycket av det som fediversumet gör annorlunda än de kommersiella alternativen uppskattades.

das plakat habe ich jetzt schon ein paar mal auf meinem arbeitsweg gesehen. eine christliche morddrohung. ein vergleichbarer text mit einem islamischen hintergrund wäre mit sicherheit schon von polizei und behörden einkassiert worden.
bedrohlich und herablassend. sie konnten sich noch nicht mal aufraffen, die anrede korrekt zu schreiben. vermutlich zu sehr mit beten und mordplanungen beschäftigt.

Released yesterday, Backfire is what happens when an arcade cabinet gets possessed and decides to eat you alive. It’s a horror-themed shooter where your weapons only fire backwards.
But that’s not the only trick. Your ship won’t stop moving. The only way to steer is by frantically clicking where you want it to drift. Hug a wall and you’ll bleed health fast. Let an enemy catch you and it’ll try to swallow you whole—at which point you need to hammer click your way free. It’s a constant dance of close-quarters panic: get in tight enough to blast enemies with your stubby backward shots, but not so close that they chomp you.
Having played the demo, I can say it’s tense and clever. Die-upgrade-repeat is the loop here: every ten-minute run drops souls, and those souls unlock new weapons like flamethrowers, shotguns, and snipers (all backwards, of course). It’s a roguelite, but one with its own nasty arcade flavor.
Visually? Sparse neon minimalism. Which makes it all the stranger that the system requirements list a Zen 2 CPU, 16GB of RAM, and an RDNA2 GPU on Linux. Windows is much more modest—an i5 and a GTX 750 minimum—but even then, I suspect the devs didn’t bother testing on weaker setups.
Controls are clearly designed for mouse. You can play it with an Xbox pad, but it doesn’t feel right—click-to-move is too baked into the core design.
As for platforms: Windows and SteamOS/Linux run it natively (no Proton workaround required). Sorry, Mac players, you’re out of luck.
Price? C$9.74 at launch, with a 25% discount running until mid-September. For something this original, that’s more than reasonable.

Group chats in DMs are quite common so there might be a danger of frequent false positives causing people to ignore the warning completely or want it switched off.
I guess there could be a warning if an account is added after the chat has already started, but I don't know how easy it is to code?
