The image features a gradient background transitioning from purple at the top to pink at the bottom. The text is predominantly white, with some words in a cursive script. The main message reads: "IT'S OK TO BE WRONG ABOUT THINGS. You can have a change of opinion or beliefs after hearing more information and facts. That's not a personal failure. It's personal growth." The text is arranged in a vertical layout, with the largest text at the top and bottom, and smaller text in the middle. The message is clear and motivational, encouraging the idea that changing one's mind is a sign of personal growth rather than failure.

Russia now fully bans “foreign agents” from all educational work — not just with children, but with adult students too. Anybody with this designation now will lose their teaching license tomorrow. "Foreign agents" are also barred from positions on state corporations. rbc.ru/politics/01/09/2025/68b…

In 1944, 73,000 Americans had the courage to land in Normandy to stop Adolf Hitler.

But in 2025, we can't even find a handful of Republicans in Congress who have the courage to stop Donald Trump.

Man that is shameful.

How many of ya'll are in the same city as me?

I'd hope it'd be higher than average, but my guess would be like 6 percent? But I have no idea.

  • I live in NYC (4%, 18 votes)
  • I do not live in NYC (79%, 308 votes)
  • "greater NYC region" or used to live there (6%, 25 votes)
  • Secret Fourth Option (9%, 38 votes)
389 voters. Poll end: 6 giorni fa

I would never expect anyone to be from the same city as me. NEW Yorkers are the worst kind of people when it comes to expecting folks who have never been there to know anything about it

The image shows a smartphone screen displaying an animated character, a gray cat with large green eyes, standing in front of a brick wall with two trash bins. The character has a surprised expression, with its arms crossed. Above the character, there is a text overlay that reads "This is the deleted talking Bitch app." Below the image, there is a social media post from "Talking Tom" with a verified checkmark, featuring a comment that says "u call me a what?" with a question mark. @catsalad I'm not saying I'm on board with our recent ... AI persuasion ... but if software can kill an SSD I'm inclined to blame the SSD.
in reply to Billy O'Neal

from the headline I originally interpreted this as something in the "excessive wear" category (say, a bug that doesn't clear a "dirty" flag in the disk write cache, and keeps writing and writing stuff to disk at full link speed), prematurely exhausting disk write cycles.

That's entirely up to the SSD (NVMe protocol doesn't put wear leveling in the OS)
in reply to Billy O'Neal

yeah, but let's say I have a 1 TB Phison E31T ES, if the OS is gratuitously writing stuff at 8 GB/s, it's going to exceed its 600 TB endurance rating within 21 hours of continuous usage. I'm not saying that this is what is happening here, but that's the kind of stuff that wears out hardware even if it has no firmware bugs.

in reply to Matteꙮ Italia

Once you get out of the SLC cache these don't get anything like 8GB/s. I'd expect somewhere between 0.5GB-2GB/s then but haven't tested that particular model. And you'd need a huge heatsink on the drive to stop it going into thermal derate or shutdown first.

Even at 8GB/s a "I installed this Windows Update and then SSD dead" would be a strange report unless the user let it spin for 20 hours 😛

All my life, I have felt a strong affinity with Jewish people, but now that my employer, Columbia University, has adopted the IHRA definition of antisemitism, I suddenly find myself labeled an "antisemite" because I oppose Palestinian oppression.

I think far too many people are being critical of @defcon for doing events outside of the US. The reality is, DEF CON is impossible to access for far too many people outside of the US because of US visa restrictions. This has always been a problem, but it has become a much bigger one lately.

For starters, the US has one of the world's most expensive visas. It now costs $424 per person (since the addition of the new "Visa Integrity Fee"). Additionally, the US requires in-person interviews to issue a visa, and these take place at a US embassy or consulate. Unless you live in your country's capital, you'll have travel expenses on top of it.

Then, of course, there are the delays for interviews. These can take months or even years. It was starting to get better, but the federal government laid off a large number of people who process visas, immediately resulting in extended delays. If you want to speak at DEF CON, and you're a foreigner, it's highly questionable whether you'll get a visa in time.

Finally, there is "extreme vetting" which is taking even more time. Suppose you're selected for "additional visa processing." What triggers this? The criteria are a secret, but there is a strong correlation with things like being a known hacker traveling to DEF CON.

Finally, the US is denying visas for what they perceive as political speech (or expected political speech) that opposes the Party. This isn't unique in the world; other authoritarian countries like China also do this, which made it difficult for DEF CON to operate there.

DEF CON isn't unique in facing these challenges. The United States is closing the door to foreigners, limiting international collaboration, and limiting political speech. The only question is how to respond. Hosting DEF CON events in other locales, which guarantee research freedom and welcome international collaboration, is an entirely reasonable response.

in reply to TProphet

I am an American, and I will warn you -- Do not come here!

We've locking up people who have Visas, who paid the fee, who passed the interview, who have never once wished us harm, or spoke out against any political party.

None of that matters.

You can be locked be for just being brown. Or can be white, and still be locked up, because the person checking visas is in a bad mood. Or, in the case of a recent Canadian, didn't respond well when someone was trying to flirt with her.

And once locked up, you can pretty much vanish in the system for days, weeks, or even months without a phone call.

Do not come here.

This is not the United States you know, or thought you knew. We're a nation gone insane, and it is not safe to come here.

Some of us would love to leave here, and we would if we could.
