I agree on most of the points in this article, except for one:
Rust’s goal of providing zero-cost abstractions often comes up in discussions around async Rust and is sometimes misunderstood. For example, the idea that async Rust is a big ecosystem with many crates and building all of those crates as part of your application is a violation of the zero-cost abstractions principle. It isn’t, zero-cost is about runtime performance.
A good zero-cost abstraction should be both about performance AND developer experience.
If handling something as fundamental in modern programming languages like async coroutines ends up with subjecting developers to the whims of opinionated external frameworks like Tokio (which btw competes with Rust’s own async-async-std implementation), building a few MBs of crates every time just to handle this paradigm and understanding how concurrent ownership models are implemented in different frameworks (and even routinely exposing yourself to manual synchronization mechanisms like mutexes, which the whole async paradigm was supposed to hide away as much as possible), then one has to question the whole implementation of the abstraction.
It doesn’t matter if the new abstraction doesn’t impact the performance of the program at runtime, if it doesn’t actually do any good job in reducing the cognitive burden of the developer that uses it and reduce the number of knobs that they have to control.
Leaky abstractions can’t be zero-cost abstractions.
Which btw it doesn’t mean that I have a silver bullet to solve Rust’s async abstraction problem. If you build a language around certain constraints (like mathematically proven memory safety) then you should just acknowledge that some problems that require more flexibility (like shared memory ownership across async components) will be harder to model.
But then let’s just acknowledge that this is a design issue that will always require some level of trade-offs, rather than hiding ourselves behind a “as long as the abstraction doesn’t impact runtime performance then it’s zero-cost”.

I am not surprised. That's often the case when I check the streetview, especially in the US (but it has happened in Europe occasionally too).
My fave thing in this pic is the Grand Hotel sign, which (based on the design) I'm guessing was there since the 1930s.
