For years I've made use of old Windows PCs by reconditioning them with #GNU/#Linux OS. Usually Trisquel, or if the hardware won't support it, Mint.
After a bit of experimentation, I settled on a manual partition scheme. Which allows me to test new versions or other distros, and keep my files on a separate partition. To avoid having to restore from backups every time I upgrade my OS.
But I can't seem to get an OS to boot on newer devices with Restricted Boot, using manual partitioning. Help?
Wild guess, without knowing neither Trisquel nor your background: you've forgot the EFI boot partition.that wasn't neccessary for booting in BIOS mode on older HW.

* primary partition for OS x2, 20GB each
* swap partition, 5-10GB
* /home partition, whatever's left on the drive

Nope. I added an EFI partition to the scheme after the first time the partitioner spat the dummy when it didn't find one. At the larger end of the size range that seemed to be recommended on the web. Partitioner refused to recognise it. No doubt some detail I missed.

A3. I have been pleased with a stream of makes over the years, though the one I have appreciated most is my first strip pieced work, a project keeper called "Crow Tools" from a pattern in "Patchwork Loves Embroidery".
On the inside pocket is a decorative medallion appliqué of Amelia Bedelia, the earnest though easily confused housemaid, as a sort of mascot for crafting and making.

Thesis: a social media platform that does not make you addicted will always have fewer daily active users than one that does make you addicted.
Question: How many fewer? 10%? 90%?
It's not just an addictive algo, it's distribution across their other apps, partnerships with big orgs and influencers that pull users, and brand recognition. I can't go to Instagram without being updated on Threads at least once, and almost every big account I follow on IG posts to Threads now.
I don't disagree with the thesis, but Threads isn't playing the same game as every other non-Meta platform in the ecosystem.
@quillmatiq Agree there are lots of special circumstances with Meta products.
What I'm trying to figure out is what the actual "market size" for non-addictive social media is. We know kinda what it is for traditional social media -- about half of the humans on the planet.
For non-addictive social media? Same? a tenth of it? When we compare Mastodon / Bluesky / commercial platform numbers, what is a fair comparison in that light?
