I recall a few years back some guy showed up at a BBC office for an interview for a maintenance position and was rushed from reception into the studio to be asked for his views on the economy live on air. It turned out the actual guest was running late.

If people in the US wonder if there's a plan behind the US president's foreign policies, after the soybeans 'succes', where the US gets to export less than in 2024, annually reconfirmable, and loses nvidia at the same time, I guess it's fair to admit that there is one: to screw the country big time and hand it over bankrupt.

It appears most people outside the USA (and many inside) don't understand what the government shutdown is all about. Here is a succinct summary:

That's a good thing!

I like history, but that's precisely what it should be: monarchy, history. Because I believe that if royal houses still held the power of earlier times, many people would lose their romanticized view of the dynasties of the nobility. It's currently unavoidable and easy to portray oneself as a benefactor and philanthropist using resources stolen and appropriated in the past, as well as current allowances.

I'd be fine with him still having the titles if he went to jail.

When Trump decides to increase nuclear testing as it supposedly serves the national interest.

Remember that it's not only such criminally irresponsible politicians who threaten the Unacceptable.

Only scientists and technicians know how to design and build these weapons: all the bombs and long-range missiles. They're the only ones who know how.

Scientists: have responsibility for what they do, too.

“Social Networking is Pickleball…
The fediverse doesn’t need to resurface the tired, worn-down tennis courts of the old internet. It needs to create something new. This ecosystem offers an entirely different kind of online experience. It’s smaller, more local, more relational. It’s messy in the best ways. It prioritises conversation over content, sharing over extraction, and community governance over corporate control.”
jaz.co.uk/2025/10/30/there-is-…

There is One Fediverse. There are a Million Pickleball Courts.

OK, maybe not a million, but over 100,000 and growing fast. And they are displacing tennis courts, because you can get four pickleball courts where one tennis court existed, and more and more people think that’s a good thing.

Around the world, tennis is in decline. Court usage is down, club memberships are shrinking, and fewer young people are picking up a racket. At the same time, pickleball is on the rise. In parks, leisure centres, and converted gym halls, it’s growing at a pace few expected. It’s a big enough shift that Big Tennis is trying to massage the numbers and remain relevant, claiming participation rates that aren’t really there.

I don’t play either sport, but suddenly I see pickleball signs everywhere. What was once a niche pastime has gone mainstream seemingly overnight. And it makes sense. Pickleball is easier to get into, more fun for casual players, takes up less space, and can be played indoors without needing a full court or expensive gear. It’s inclusive, low-pressure, and social.
A graph showing pickleball participation surpassing tennis in 2024Source: Apple Heart and Movement Study
There’s a lesson here. The old, customary way of doing things can and does change. You can pour resources into resurfacing old tennis courts, hoping to bring back players who’ve already moved on. Or you can build pickleball courts, simple, accessible spaces that meet the needs of today, not the nostalgia of yesterday.

And this is a little bit how I’ve come to see the fediverse.

For years, much of the energy has focussed on building a better version of something else. A better Twitter, a better Instagram, a better Tumblr. The assumption being that if we replicated what people already knew but made it safer, more ethical, or decentralised, the masses would come.

But they didn’t.

And that’s not a failure, it’s a sign that something way more interesting is going on.

Social Media is Tennis

Social media use is declining overall. That’s not a problem unique to the fediverse, it’s a signal that people are tired of the model entirely. The data backs it up. Engagement is down, trust is eroding, and more people are asking whether these platforms actually serve their needs. Conversely, for the first time, social media has displaced television as the top way Americans get news. Europe’s not far behind.
Source: NiemanLab
Most if not all of the large platforms started out as social networking. A way to connect with friends, family, and new communities. But over time, they slide into something else: social media. The focus becomes content, metrics, attention. People become audiences, and the algorithmic feed of addictive slop, propaganda, and ads replaces human conversations.

The world maybe needs both things, social media and social networking. But the two are a wee bit mutually exclusive. At the very least, the motivations for operating these services are very different.

Social Networking is Pickleball

The fediverse doesn’t need to resurface the tired, worn-down tennis courts of the old internet. It needs to create something new. This ecosystem offers an entirely different kind of online experience. It’s smaller, more local, more relational. It’s messy in the best ways. It prioritises conversation over content, sharing over extraction, and community governance over corporate control.
A before and after shot showing tennis courts being replaced by pickleball courts. Over each court is the logo of a social media platform.
Right now, not everyone wants that, not yet. But as we hear the call for digitally sovereign, locally governed platforms, we’re not just offering an alternative to what’s failing. We’re laying the groundwork for what comes next.

We don’t need to build the perfect tennis court for a game that fewer and fewer people are playing. We need to build a million pickleball courts. Small, accessible, playful spaces that reflect the changing culture of online life. That’s why the fediverse shouldn’t be chasing migrations. We don’t need to become the next Twitter. We need to be the first of something else.

Growth will come, but not by chasing the habits of a declining model. Growth will come when we fully embrace what makes the fediverse distinct.

The fediverse isn’t growing slowly because of a lack of cross-platform migration, it’s because the people who will thrive here aren’t migrating at all, they’re looking for something fundamentally different.

Sure, some will switch from tennis to pickleball, that’s a given. But many more will have never played tennis, or tried it a few times and it wasn’t fun. They will show up on the fediverse at some point.

And when they arrive, we should have the courts ready.

To everyone already building in the fediverse – the admins, the moderators, the developers, the artists, the writers, the everyday users… keep going.

Every time you welcome someone new, every time you resolve a conflict with care, every time you share something thoughtful or beautiful or kind, you’re helping shape a different kind of internet.

You’re not just connecting people, you’re restoring meaning to that connection. You’re helping build spaces that are slower, more intentional, more humane. You’re showing that online communities can be self-governed, safer, and grounded in values, not revenue.

It may not look like growth from the outside. But this is how movements begin, not with numbers, but with purpose. So keep doing the good work. Keep experimenting. Keep protecting each other. Keep making space for joy, for solidarity, and for belonging.

The future of the internet doesn’t arrive all at once, we build it, bit by bit, together.

And we’re already building it.

Openpilot 0.10.1 Released: Improved World Model and Overhauled User Interface

Openpilot 0.10.1 introduces the North Nevada Model, featuring major improvements to the World Model architecture. The system now infers 6 degree of freedom ego localization directly from images, removing the need for external localization inputs. This reduces over-constrained data and opens the door for future self-generated imagery.

To support this change, the autoencoder Compressor was upgraded with masked image modeling, switched from CNN to Vision Transformer architecture, and the World Model itself was scaled from 500 million to 1 billion parameters. All models now train on a much larger dataset of 2.5 million segments, up from 437,000, covering more vehicles, countries, and driving scenarios.

The UI has been completely rewritten, moving from Qt/Weston to Python with raylib. This reduces code complexity by about 10,000 lines, cuts boot time by 4 seconds, lowers GPU usage, and simplifies development.

Finally, the Driver Monitoring Model's training infrastructure has been streamlined with dynamic data streaming, though the model’s functionality remains unchanged.

So what do you do if you want this? Does the car need to already have cameras and sensors and stuff or do you get those with the comma and you have to install it into your car by yourself somehow? What's the procedure?

No discutí.
Mi padre resopló: «No seas dramática, Alexandra.
#narraciones #mensajedepaz #socialmedia

In case you missed it, Mastodon treasure @hildabast has published a great article describing the current situation with Mastodon and #Bluesky and the relative merits of each.

What is particularly nice about this detailed essay is the conservative and learned approach she takes, and the honesty with which she recognizes deficiencies in both platforms. She also addresses how Mastodon's recent developments in usability are changing this equation.

Great job Hilda!

A paragraph I never in a million years would have ever expected to read in a legitimate news source. (And yes, I do consider @404mediaco a very good news source - better than the tech desks at every mainstream newspaper combined...)

404media.co/ai-generated-mpreg…

Perplexed by all this, I reached out to Cuomo’s campaign for an explanation. I wanted a response to the ad and to get his thoughts on AI-generated political content. More importantly, I needed to know their opinion on the pregnancy. “Does that bill look pregnant to you?” I asked. “I think it looks pregnant, but my editors are split. I would love for the Campaign to weigh in.” Out of journalist due diligence, I also reached out to Mamdani’s press office. Neither campaign has responded to my request for it to weigh in on the pregnancy of the AI-generated cartoon bill.

Andrew Cuomo Uses AI MPREG Schoolhouse Rock Bill to Attack Mamdani, Is Out of Ideas

I am haunted by a pregnant bill in Andrew Cuomo’s new AI-generated attack ad against Zohran Mamdani.

Cuomo posted the ad on his X account that riffed on the famous Schoolhouse Rock! song “I’m just a bill.” In Cuomo’s AI-generated cartoon nightmare, Zohran Mamdani lights money on fire while a phone bearing the ChatGPT logo explains, apparently, that Mamdani is not qualified.

The ad bears all the hallmarks of the sloppiest of AI trash: weird artifacting, strange voices that don’t sync with the mouths talking, and inconsistent animation. It feels both surreal and of the moment and completely ancient.

🎶“I’m Just A Shill” (FT. Zohran) pic.twitter.com/ga3JxnYO7B
— Andrew Cuomo (@andrewcuomo) October 30, 2025

And then there’s the pregnant bill.

The Schoolhouse Rock! Bill is an iconic cartoon character that has been parodied by everyone from The Simpsons to Saturday Night Live. There are thousands, perhaps millions, of pictures of the cartoon bill online, all available to be gobbled up by scrapers and turned into training data for AI.

For some reason, the bill in Cuomo’s ad has thick red lips (notably absent in the original) and appears to be pregnant. Adding to the discordant AI jank of the image, the pregnancy is only visible when the bill is standing up. Sometimes it’s leaning against the steps and in those shots it has the slim figure characteristic of its inspiration. But when the bill stands it looks positively inflated, almost as if the video generator used to make Cuomo’s ad was trained on MPREG fetish art of the bill and not the original cartoon itself. The thick and luscious red lips are present whether the bill is leaning or standing.

Towards the end of the ad, an anthropomorphic phone with a ChatGPT logo wanders into the scene. Standing next to the pregnant bill, I could not but help but think that the phone is the father of whatever child the bill carried.

My observation led to an argument in the 404 Media Slack channel and opinions were split. “It does not seem pregnant to me,” said Emanuel Maiberg.

Jason Koebler, however, came to my defense. He circled the pregnant belly of the cartoon bill and shared it. “Baby is stored in the circle area,” he said.

This is not the first time the Cuomo campaign has used AI. An ad in early October featured a deepfaked Cuomo working as a train operator, stock trader, and a stagehand. A week ago, the Cuomo campaign released a long, racist video depicting criminals endorsing Mamdani. Critics called the ad racist. The campaign deleted it shortly after it was posted and blamed the whole thing on a junior staffer.

It is worth noting that Cuomo's AI slop is being deployed most likely because the candidate has been utterly incapable of generating any authentic excitement about his campaign in New York City or on the internet, and he is facing a digitally native, younger candidate who just seems effortlessly Good At the Internet and Posting.

This is, unfortunately, how a lot of politics works in 2025. Desperate campaigns and desperate presidents are in a slop-fueled arms race to make the most ridiculous possible ads and social media content. It looks cheap, is cheap, and is the realm of politicians who are totally out of ideas, but increasingly it feels like slop is the dominant aesthetic of our time.
