on #Linux (at least with xorg/cinnamon/fedora/whatever), SDL3 is picking up these phantom mouse up/down events that are mislabled as being from mouse 0, and this behavior differs from SDL3's mouse emulation (which I have off anyway).

libinput by way of the debugging info provided by xinput seems to not be doing this, so that would leave xorg right? is there anything else I should check?
@pupxel doubtful. the phantom mouse events have approximately the same coordinates as the touch events and occur with a consistent ordering relative to the touch events. behaviorally this is clearly a compatibility bodge, but I haven't had any luck figuring out what is doing it or how to make it stop
also, it's worth noting for the sake of trouble shooting and not for the sake of saying that windows does not have this problem: windows does not have this problem. SDL3 on windows correctly picks up the touch events w/o the weird phantom mouse events.
the solution I'm considering is making linux players have to select whether or not they want tablet input or mouse input events. the navigation buttons would have to respond to everything or you couldn't open the settings page, so that stands to be confusing :/
This is a situation where I would begin by just filing on SDL3 because if the bug is somewhere else, they would be able to tell you where with more accuracy than you could work it out yourself.
sometimes in a situation like this i volunteer "If the bug is in some other program I would be happy to file it there, but I need enough information to explain to them the problem."

Core X11 events are used for absolute motion while the mouse is grabbed, as XInput doesn't receive motion events from the master pointer, and the position from the slave devices lags ...
a triaging project where you file bug for piece of linux and they help you repro the issue, find where it come from and file a bug report against the correct project would be nice
This should pop up a window with a white background and a black-bordered rectangle inside.
When you “do stuff” in the window, it will report the input events from the core X protocol into the terminal (mouse motion, button presses etc). (This is why you need to launch it from a terminal.)
Note that the black-bordered region inside the window is set to behave differently, so you'll probably want to do your click tests elsewhere in the window.
I see two pairs of ButtonPress events each followed by its ButtonRelease events, with some MotionNotify events interspersed (mouse button down, mouse wiggle, mouse button up). Nothing unusual.
also note that AFAIK this only reports core input events, so if SDL is using some other layer (e.g. tthe XI2 extension) you won't see the same behavior (I don't know if there is a comparable XI2 debuging tool)

People imagine fascism as the opposite of democratic governance. In fact, it employs the same police, courts, property rights, patriotic mythology, and habits of obedience as state democracy. Wherever there is a powerful state with a monopoly on violence, fascism is only an election away.
This is why resistance to authoritarianism must take place at all times, not simply when an army is invading under swastika flags.
