President Trump's trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos was briefly delayed after Air Force One returned to Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, shortly after departure due to a minor electrical issue identified on the 747. Flight crews did not declare an emergency or squawk 7700, indicating the situation was precautionary.
Real-time aircraft tracking platform AirNav Radar showed the flight path of AF1 as it departed Joint Base Andrews for Davos, Switzerland, in the overnight hours. While paralleling the coast of Long Island, pilots appeared to decide to return to Joint Base Andrews due to a "minor electrical issue."
AF1 landed safely at Andrews around 2300 ET, after about an hour and 20 minutes in the air, according to AirNav Radar.

Trump and the delegation traveling with him quickly boarded a Boeing 757, typically used by the Vice President or other cabinet members, and took off around midnight en route to Davos.
Despite the brief travel delay, Trump has arrived in Switzerland. He is expected to address the Davos elites at 0830 ET.

The focus of Trump's speech is likely on the domestic agenda, particularly housing, according to Goldman's Delta One desk-head, Rich Privorotsky, who noted that overnight headlines floated executive action aimed at curbing institutional home purchases, though legal scope looks narrow.
Expectations are also building around incremental flexibility in 401k usage as part of a broader affordability push.
Late chatter about tariff rebate checks feels legally doubtful without Congressional backing.
Polling on affordability remains weak, and foreign adventurism…Greenland in particular…has not helped approval ratings.
This speech has been framed as both a reset toward domestic priorities and given the relative outperformance of domestic stocks could be an important catalyst
But, earlier, at the Davos podium, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a historic rebuke to the U.S. under President Trump, declaring the rules-based order led by America "a pleasant fiction": "This bargain no longer works."
While the address has been front-run as being about domestic 'affordability', we suspect the President will diverge from the teleprompter a little and use this as an excuse to discuss his various recent escapades around the world.
JPMorgan may have summed it up best: “We thought the president was going to Davos to talk about housing and credit card affordability. Suddenly now it’s become about Greenland affordability."
The President is due to speak at 0830ET.

Can you slim macOS down?
![<p>Open Activity Monitor when your Mac isn’t doing a great deal and you’ll see hundreds of processes listed there. Even in a virtual machine with a minimum of services there are at least 500, and in a vanilla setup with no apps open a real Mac can exceed 700. Clearly some of those like WindowServer are essential, but aren’t there plenty we could do without? That’s a question I’m asked repeatedly, which this article tries to answer.</p>
<p>One of the first problems when trying to identify which processes we could do without is knowing what each does, and how they’re interrelated. I doubt whether any individual in Apple knows them all, and trying to establish what some do would be a challenge. If we assume that we need to identify just 500 candidates, and each takes an average of one week to research, that would take over 10 person-years, by which time they would all have changed again. Studying 500 targets that are ever-changing simply isn’t practical.</p>
<p>When problems get difficult, it’s often best to cheat, so I’m going to go for the low-hanging fruit and consider a well-known group of processes, those making Time Machine backups. I’ve been following these since macOS Sierra, and frequently study them in the log. They’re also good candidates for removal, as many folk don’t back up using Time Machine but use one of its alternatives. So some already have good reason to want to be rid of <code>backupd</code> and its relatives. They’re also relatively discrete: although they depend on other processes to function, I don’t know of any other subsystems that require Time Machine, making it potentially disposable.</p>
<p>Set up a basic VM in maOS 26.2 and, even though Time Machine has never been enabled, you’ll see its processes listed in Activity Monitor.</p>

<p>Those two processes are controlled by LaunchDaemons stored in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons, in property lists named com.apple.backupd-helper.plist and com.apple.backupd.plist. Here’s our first problem, as those are located in the Signed System Volume (SSV), so we can’t change them in any way. The same applies to the other 417 LaunchDaemons and 460 LaunchAgents that account for most of the processes listed by Activity Monitor. In the days before the SSV it was possible to edit their property lists to prevent them from being launched, but that isn’t possible any more when running modern macOS.</p>
<p>If we can’t stop the <code>backupd-auto</code> process from being run, is there any other way we could block it? To answer that we need to understand how it’s scheduled and dispatched.</p>
<p>Until macOS Sierra, Time Machine backups were run from <code>launchd</code> as timed events, but since then their scheduling and dispatch has been <a href="https://eclecticlight.co/2025/01/29/watch-your-background-background-activities-with-das-cts/">performed jointly</a> by Duet Activity Scheduler (DAS) and Centralised Task Scheduling (CTS), using lightweight inter-process communication (XPC). DAS manages a huge list of activities including com.apple.backupd-auto, and decides when to dispatch it to CTS to run. For example, it won’t do that for the first five minutes after a Mac starts up, to allow other processes to run first.</p>
<p>Once that time is up, DAS decides to run the backup:<br />

This whole sequence was completed in 0.144 seconds, using lightweight inter-process communication with negligible use of resources, and only repeats hourly.</p>
<p>To the Unix purist, this might appear wasteful and unnecessary, but macOS isn’t, and never has been, Unix. It’s a closed-source proprietary operating system designed for use by millions of consumers and regular users. Rather than configuring it using config files or its thousands of property lists, its controls are largely exposed in System Settings, with a few settings hidden away and only accessible through the <code>defaults</code> command.</p>

Drives me nuts. I want a Pixel for Graphene. All of the Pixels are huge. I heard Graphene is supposedly working on a phone, but that's a year or more out.
I don't know if Apple still makes the SE, but that was a perfect tool. New internals, old form factor.
So far as I can tell, phones are most people's default computing devices, so for them, a larger screen is fine and helpful. Personally, I think the "mobile" part of mobile phone was more important, and I am firmly of the camp that thinks general purpose computers are far better than consumption devices that are super locked down like phones. So I hate my phone and love my computers, and I realize I'm like the 1% of 1% of people in this regard. Anyway, fuck phone companies for not making phones for small people.
I...would love to, but doing anything with encryption means a dumb phone is a no-go, so it's either a modem and a pc, or a smartphone. And as you said, a smartphone is basically required. The annoyance is really that we know small smartphones are fine, they've existed for years, just...not recently. The Asus Zenfone was a good option, but that's either gone big or just gone.
