EU cautiously weighs lifting sanctions on Syria, with caveats

Calls are mounting for Western nations to lift sanctions on Syria after former President Bashar Al-Assad was overthrown by rebel groups last month. European countries have begun engaging with the new interim authorities, but the EU remains hesitant to lift sanctions before it sees concrete changes in Syria. The issue is once again on the table at a gathering of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.

It has come to my mind that we live the last years of a happy era when you can actually buy a phone with no #AI shenanigans whatsoever (well, except for obvious neural networks working with camera images if you count them as AI for some reason).
The end of this era is nigh. And there's basically nothing we can do about it.

WELCOME BACK, THIS IS DIGITAL POLITICS. I'm Mark Scott, and I bring you this class-A tech-related dad joke to get your week going. Chortle.

For those of you in London, I'm co-hosting a tech policy gathering (or 'knees-up,' to borrow from British slang) on Jan 30 from 6:30pm onwards. Come join us (it's free!) by RSVPing here.

— In the geopolitical fight around tech, everyone wants to build the digital highways of the future. But, for many, bigger won't mean better.

— Here we go again: transatlantic data flows are in jeopardy amid a shake-up in how Washington allows European citizens to file complaints about how their data is handled.

— Where are the world's most powerful computers located? I've got an answer for that.

Let's get started:

Nasce l'informatico belga Robert Cailliau.

Building the Feynman Motor That Fits Through a Sewing Needle’s Eye

The first attempt at replicating William McLellan's miniature motor. (Credit: Chronova Engineering, YouTube)The first attempt at replicating William McLellan’s miniature motor. (Credit: Chronova Engineering, YouTube)
How small can an electric motor be without resorting to manufacturing methods like lithography? In a recent video, [Chronova Engineering] on YouTube tries to replicate the 1960 McLellan motor that fulfilled [Richard Feynman]’s challenge requirements. This challenge was part of [Feynman]’s 1959 lecture titled There’s Plenty of Room at the Bottom, on the possibilities of miniaturization. A $1,000 reward was offered for anyone who could build an electric motor that was no larger than 1/64th inch cubed (~0.256 cm3), with the expectation that new manufacturing methods would be required to manufacture a motor this small.

As reported in the December 1960 issue of The Month at Caltech, [William McLellan] walked into [Feynman]’s lab with this tiny marvel that took him 2.5 months of lunch hour breaks to build. Weighing in at 250 micrograms and consisting out of 13 parts, it was constructed using a microscope, a watchmaker’s lathe and a toothpick. Surely replicating this feat would be easy today, right?

The main challenge is that everything is incredibly small. The rotor shaft is 90 micrometers in diameter, and the four coils require winding incredibly thin wire at scales where typical manufacturing methods do not apply. Suffice it to say that it takes massive amounts of patience, creativity and the best (stereo) microscope you can get, yet even with modern optics and materials this first attempt mostly failed.

At the end we’re left with SEM shots of this replication attempt and an immense amount of respect for the skills of [William McLellan] who made a working version in 1960 using much more basic tools during his lunch breaks.

Thanks to [J. Peterson] for the tip.

Discord Update that enables Streaming on Wayland

A few weeks a go discord on linux had an update that enabled you to do screensharing on wayland even with audio.

There are a few bugs. For example, you can not change the window and sometimes have to reactivate the audio check box to have the audio work.
Sadly the flatpak could not shit that update, because the chromium version shipped has to major bugs in flatpaks (issue).

But the stable .deb has now working screen sharing with audio. That is something that x11 does not have.

in reply to Zenlix

I've been doing this from Firefox forever...

But "with audio" is actually a new feature. Previously I was manually sending the audio through my voice channel which worked pretty well but it would be nice to have a separate stream for the streaming audio.

Probably not enough for me to install the spyware though, I'll keep using Discord via Firefox.

in reply to Zenlix

Closed-source software that sends home tons of information about your system without consent. All communication accessible to a VC funded company that has huge pressure to make as much money as possible.
in reply to Zenlix

It still says "audio capture might not be available" for me. Still on vesktop regardless because of various other improvements and features.

Version 0.6.5 of Laurel, the #Linux #auditd post-processing plugin is out. Enjoy useful, enriched, JSON-formatted audit logs suitable for threat detection in modern #SIEM setups.

New features and fixes include:
- Processes running as part of systemd services get service information added as part of the PID enrichment
- Translate IO_URING operations (like auditd 3.1+)
- Option to use a prefix instead of capitalized key names for enriched/translated data
- Improve process tracking reliability by handling SYSCALL audit messages as early as possible
- Improve caching in user/group lookups
