What's up with all these #mastodon profile pics disappearing today? (Had to re-add mine just now). Some of my follows appear with just a black square instead of their familiar profile pics 🙁

Edit: it's my client app. As you were 🙄

If an AI-written novel becomes a bestseller, who gets the royalties? The AI can’t claim them, but its output rivals skilled authors. Are prompters co-authors? Copyright laws never foresaw this. It’s time to rethink ownership and authorship as human and machine creativity blur. #AI #Copyright

I don't know if this is a @Mastodon or a @pixelfed issue, but I changed my avatar and bio on @PixelFed@pixelfed.social a few days ago, and I still see the old ones when following my #Pixelfed account on #Mastodon.

A little morning raag from Family Bhattacharya.

As it happens, I'm in the hospital for the next several weeks getting chemo for leukemia. Came out of the blue. Went to my family doc for some minor belly complaint. Bloodwork came back funny, rushed to the hospital.

Best possible care here at Duke. My doc is apparently a leader in leukemia tx. Very optimistic given the genotyping. Already responding well to the chemo. Music has always helped me cope.

True! People come to Duke from all over the world specifically for leukemia treatment. Good luck!

Eles parecem estar em um quarto aconchegante e iluminado pela luz natural que entra pela janela. A atmosfera é íntima e carinhosa.

📢 I am very proud to announce the publication of my #research #paper "Does Functional Package Management Enable Reproducible Builds at Scale? Yes." at MSR'25, written with @zacchiro and @Zimm_i48 !

-> If you're interested in bitwise reproducibility and NixOS, I wrote a #blog post summarizing the key takeaways for the article: luj.fr/blog/is-nixos-truly-rep…

-> I strongly advise curious readers to read our preprint: hal.science/hal-04913007

🔁 Boosts would be much appreciated!

Congrats Julien! Very important work for @reproducible_builds , #Nix, and safety of free/#opensource software more broadly.

> Note that even projects that do monitor build reproducibility like Debian or Arch Linux only do it at a given point in time (when the package gets built) and not backward in time like we did in our experiment!

Arch does have an archive going back to 2016~2018, and we are able to reliably reproduce packages from way back when. Fwiw.

in reply to Morten Linderud

And there are better citations for the improbable aspect of reliably reproducing nix packages from when the topic was originally discussed inn 2016.

Only citing me is not giving me more fans!

in reply to Morten Linderud

Another aspect of this problem is whether or not the 91% figure, which is not mentioned in the paper, is this bi-effect of the decade of work by the reproducible build effort?

I'd be also interested if the 91% figure is inflated? nixpkgs consume entire package indexes where some ecosystems are more reproducible than others.

in reply to Morten Linderud

@Foxboron We haven't proved the causal relationship with the reproducible-builds efforts, but we do believe that the gradual increase that we observe over the years in our experiment is very likely the result of the reproducible-builds project and related culture spreading around!
in reply to Morten Linderud

@Foxboron On the question of the different ecosystems ingested by nixpkgs, we discuss in our RQ2 the disparities in reproducibility rates in function of ecosystem of provenance: we indeed remark that some large ecosystems (like Python for example) have excellent reproducibility rate and contribute positively in the overall nixpkgs reproducibility rate. On the other hand Haskell for example is also one of the largest ecosystem in nixpkgs and has 1/2
in reply to Luj

@Foxboron very poor reproducibility rate (around 60%). Haskell even accounts for about 41% of all non-reproducible packages that we identified ! (About 47k non reproducible Haskell packages)
in reply to Morten Linderud

@Foxboron Do you rebuild today packages from 2016~2018? If yes could you give me a link and I'll amend the post
in reply to Luj

Well, FWIW, I didn’t tried a systematic rebuild of all packages but a full rebuild of one specific computational environment using source code from Software Heritage and starting from the smallest binary seed as possible.

The most annoying are issues 7. Time bomb, and also 5. Bootstrapping. Somehow it could be interesting to evaluate at scale such “extreme worst-case setup”. 😀

This is the evangelical Christian myth that is being pushed. Christians do this because they believe there is virtue in suffering.

That is why grandma must choke to death on her vomit while everybody watches and sobs instead of having a celebration of life party with loved ones and then comfortably drifting off to cardiac arrest in her sleep.

All instances that these Christians bring up in Canada where it appears that MAID is being pushed on someone who doesn’t need it turns out to be a nothing story. No one is seriously being sent to their death because they are poor or require expensive care. This is a fear that is being manufactured so that grandma can die painfully. In Christ name amen.

in reply to PerogiBoi

This is not what the documentary is about though?

It’s about countries refusing to help disabled people who want to live because they tell them to choose assisted dying.

American journalist Nellie Bly died #OTD in 1922.

She was widely known for her record-breaking trip around the world in 72 days in emulation of Jules Verne's fictional character Phileas Fogg, & for an exposé in which she worked undercover to report on a mental institution from within. Bly was also an inventor, receiving U.S. patent 697,553 for a novel milk can & U.S. patent 703,711 for a stacking garbage can.

Another piece announcing the death of #socialmedia

independent.co.uk/tech/faceboo…

#TwitterX, #Facebook and even #Instagram are no longer where it's at, apparently. Instead, people are shifting toward smaller, more personal and tighter-knit social networks such as Find My Friends and Strava.

'The audiences are smaller, and known, so that you know what you post is likely to be understood in its context and with generosity. Even if people did want to read your posts cynically, it would be hard: these #socialnetworks are not really about arguments, making or scoring points.'
