Hmm. 🤔 I wonder if people are actually aware how utterly distateful and outrageous it is for the religion-erasing CCP regime to use buddhist concepts and imagery for its space/military arm badge aping purposes.
After seizing power in China in 1949 the communists destroyed and looted scores of historical places of worship, including buddhist heritage.
But even worse, immediately after the takeover the CCP launched their invasion of Tibet — a uniquely devout buddhist nation — and either completely destroyed or damaged and looted all of Tibet's three thousand holy sites that the Tibetans had built over a millenium.
Precious metals were melted and sold to fund the CCP. Remote buddhist sites were used for... artillery practice.
Tibet is still today essentially a large concentration camp for Tibetans. And a rich source for mining. Tibet's rivers have been harnessed to serve the PRC state, depriving Tibet's historical friends downstream (largely buddhists or hindus) of essential regular irrigation flows.
Oh and over a millenium ago Tibetans got fed up with the barbaric Chinese raiding their borderlands and for once invaded the Chinese capital.
As a result the two sides signed *an eternal peace treaty*...
For most of the last millenium the Tibetans willingly provided the Chinese rulers with buddhist guidance and teaching.
Only to be mercilessly crushed, slaughtered and eradicated by the current communists-turned-national-socialist dynasty.
So, the CCP naturally now uses the *sinicized* version of buddhist mythology in their propaganda. Yet without ever admitting let alone atoning for their crimes.
We can choose to ignore or just to not know any of this.
Or we could just choose to *not normalize* that dictatorship. 🤷♂️
It's fair enough for ARS to cover this "badge" matter, but I'm sure at least some of you can see how, after decades of normalizing and apolitical business ties, lack of any historical background can result in ever greater disconnect with the reality of "People's Republic's" rise.

I guess this is a major part of the explanation. Nevertheless all these countries are, still, quite religious.
Greece, and Cyprus are also extremely religious and they score quite well in LGBTQ+ rights.
I live in Romania, the bad score itself does not surprise me, but I used to explain it by a serries of corelations and now it seems there's something else I can't spot.
