For that older phone the official reset software is available, so it's fine (the one that can unbrick anything). Their newer devices however got increasingly worse like anything else. Back when I bought the 7 Pro they were still really good, it was *just* before everything went to shit.

I would so love to not buy a Google phone, but looking at GrapheneOS and all the bad luck I had with selecting Android phones in the past, my next phone will probably be a Pixel that will then instantly get GrapheneOS.
Fairphone would only be an alternative if they stopped to sign their images with AOSP test keys.

It's the tool OnePlus also uses to "unbrick" phones, it uses the Qualdcomm EDL mode to just flash new data on the internal storage without any checks. If the goal is to go back to stock it's most likely the easiest way, just make sure you got the exact image for your (regionally different) device.
Edit: Although I just realized it's only easy if you got some Windows device laying around. 😅 Preferably Win 10 due to drivers.

Since OnePlus also made it impossible to re-lock the bootloader on this device (which can't be worked around, other than the unlock issue I currently have) it won't be a truly secure device anyway (I don't have that high of a threat model anyway). There is no security-focused OS available for it anymore.
