I think your last point is really what Malik is getting at.... but on your uneasiness about 'class'; I understand that, but as a retired lefty social scientist (semi-marxist political economist) I still have, as you still see the concept's analytical utility.... but of course, that (as you rightly point out) may not work for everyone's analysis of the malaise of British society

in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May • • •i have no disagreements with the value of a structural analysis of society, but the terminology is self-reinforcing in terms of the value of people from different groups in society. 'Upper' automatically implies superiority, and leads to entitlement. 'Lower' is automatically demeaning and 'Lower' and 'Working' are often used as pejoratives.
The choice of language in itself contributes to the semantics of the analysis.

Hmmm.... my typology was always working, middle & ruling.... my father (old Labour) was always of the view that the 'real' middle class was quite small, while the working class (i.e. those who had to work to live) was much larger & divided against itself by the ruling class.... and t a large extent I was always with something like that (analytically)
