I suggest not Ubuntu, on my last laptop I tried Ubuntu and it had many problems, then I switched to Debian and found no downsides but many strange bugs disappeared.
Arch has nice things about it and everyone says Fedora has great laptop compatibility.

poked at a Unifi console I have access to that has a firewall (an older Dream Machine, but on current software). There is a separate firewall, and I think you have to define a “port set” that includes 22 (in the mobile app, Settings->Profiles->IP Groups, confusingly enough), then add an advanced firewall rule (Settings->Security->Traffic & Firewall Rules->the Advanced tab->Rule List) to accept inbound TCP traffic to that port set created before.
Another tack might be to enable device SSH, then check the predefined rules (should be the same rule list above) for whatever is added to allow that.
