China tested a magnetic bubble train that floats without tracks or wheels
On a long runway outside Chengdu, Chinese engineers have unveiled a breathtaking new prototype — a magnetic bubble transport pod that hovers in open air, needing no tracks or physical contact. Dubbed the “SkyDrift”, it glides in a sealed magnetic field, encased inside a transparent atmospheric tunnel that keeps it afloat and stable.
The pod floats not on rails, but inside a controlled magneto-atmospheric chamber — a vacuum-sealed tube with circular electromagnetic coils embedded in its wall. The coils generate a moving bubble of force that levitates and propels the vehicle using no wheels, no contact, and near-zero friction.
Unlike maglev systems, which require expensive rails and support infrastructure, SkyDrift’s magnetic field moves with the pod. The vehicle remains centered in the tunnel and can maneuver gently at high speeds — even over rough terrain or in unstable climates. Its first test reached 620 km/h.
The inside of the pod feels like an aircraft cabin, with no vibration, no engine noise, and wide panoramic glass for visibility. The low-pressure chamber drastically reduces air drag, allowing ultra-efficient acceleration with minimal power draw from onboard battery arrays.
This could be the future of transport — not just fast, but frictionless.
