#Russia Meduza and Mediazona have found a loophole in Russian government statistics, which have been largely classified since 2022 specifically with the purpose of hiding the scale of their losses in the war in #Ukraine - the National Probate Registry.
Using quite smart statistical analysis, they have calculated that Russia lost around 94’000 soldiers only in 2024, which is almost 2x more when compared against the preceding 2023 when the recorded losses were 50’000.
In total this makes 220’000 Russian registered KIA since 2022 until end of summer 2025.
I will add that this number is consistent with obituary registers such as “Goryshko”, which just recently marked 130’000 KIA identified by name. This is consistent with the National Probate Registry, because obviously not every KIA get a published obituary.
But then, there’s the darker side of Russian losses - the MIA (missing in action). The system of financial incentives created by Russian MOD makes it economically profitable to classify losses as MIA rather than KIA. A killed soldier needs a family that is additionally persistent in demanding information about his fate.
Many former prisoners, foreigners or contract soldiers without family are simply left in the field or buried in mass graves because it’s in nobody’s interest to count their deaths.
That “foreigners” category has one more, even darker side - because many soldiers forcibly mobilised from the so called DPR/LPR “republics” were never officially included in the official Russian army statistics, and they are also not included in Russian Federation registers, such as the National Probate Registry.

2/ Cela reste très improbable. Les Scandinaves n'étaient assurément pas tous de grands blonds aux yeux bleus, et au fil de leurs voyages il y a dû avoir un paquet de métissages (plus ou moins volontaires), mais aucune source ne mentionne de vikings à la peau noire.
2/ ce qui ne veut pas dire qu'il n'y en avait pas, d'une part car "absence de preuve n'est pas preuve de l'absence", d'autre part car les médiévaux se fichent un peu de la couleur de la peau, donc auraient pu ne pas le mentionner.
3/ On s'en fiche ! Ici c'est une représentation contemporaine, une fiction, avec des acteurs. Les soldats de l'époque n'avaient de toute manière pas la taille qu'ont les gens d'ajd, ni la même santé, les mêmes dents, les mêmes cheveux, etc. Et ils ne parlaient pas en anglais contemporain... !
3/ Même la représentation la plus "réaliste" possible achoppera toujours sur l'impossibilité de restituer "fidèlement" le passé (je mets des guillemets car ces notions n'ont en réalité pas grand sens ni grand intérêt). Ce sera toujours une représentation contemporaine.
3/ Quand vous allez voir Richard III au théâtre, vous n'exigez pas que l'acteur principal soit un anglais âgé de 33 ans, bossu et membre de la famille royale d'Angleterre. Vous acceptez l'acteur tel qu'il est, précisément parce que c'est un acteur (ou une actrice !)
4/ Alors pourquoi ça râle ici ? Parce que les comptes qui râlent voient dans cette présence un projet politique ("wokisme") qui leur est insupportable. L'argument du "réalisme historique" n'est qu'un prétexte qui leur permet en fait de légitimer leur racisme.
Ah oué, c'est comme les mecs qui râlent sur la présence d'un samouraï noir dans un jeu-vidéo avec des aliens technologiquement très avancées qui créent la race humaine au cours de l'antiquité, se font passer pour les dieux des mythes européens antiques et on sait tout ça grâce à une machine qui retranscrit les souvenirs précis des ancêtres cachés dans l'ADN…
