The Fediverse is not “a techno-feudal fiefdom (run by various admins).” That line is lazy, defeatist, and flat-out wrong.

What it actually is: a network held together by open protocols like ActivityPub, where anyone—with a little knowledge and elbow grease—can run their own social media platform.

Don’t have the knowledge? Fine. That’s why co-ops exist. Look at cosocial.ca or social.coop. They exist so tech skills aren’t a gatekeeping weapon—and everyone gets a real say. I believe in this model so much that @Crissy and I are laying the groundwork for a PeerTube co-op right now.

But maybe you do have the technical skills and can’t be bothered with committees, AGMs, and Robert’s Rules. Great. Then you can do what I’ve done with atomicpoet.org: start your own damn server.

Yes, it costs money and time. Not much. A Raspberry Pi with Akkoma is enough. But even small costs are still costs. Time and money are the currency of life. Pretending you can have a democratic internet without paying either is pure fantasy.

So ask yourself: what do you actually value?

Because if you’re content to sit back, post takes, and call yourself “engaged”—you’re not. You’re a spectator. Democracy doesn’t run on slacktivism. It runs on people giving their time, their money, and their effort.

In the end, your priorities show up in your actions. If you want a democratic Fediverse, you have to put skin in the game. There’s no way around it.
RE: mastodon.social/users/Mark_Har…

@lippyduck
Agreed. Much appreciated for the explainer

However, the fediverse is also still a techno-feudal fiefdom (run by various admins).

That there is a plurality of instances and admins is a mitigating factor for the worst symptoms of technofeudalism; but it isn't *necessarily* any more indicative of democratic values (free speech, representation) that Bluesky or even Xitter.

If we ever get democracy back, it will have to include (truly) public-owned and -run Social Media.

Beim Early Bird 2021 - Sonntag früh um 5 sind Autofahrys noch ... lustig: da war eine eigene Party in dem Auto glaub ich 😉

in reply to Regines Radsalon

Ethan is still at it, and I didn't realize how far along they got since they started the endeavor last year. Less than 100 left of the originally 500 foxes last year to save from the fur farm. They still need funds to cover the maintenance for the remaining foxes.

China is leading the Global South's energy transition, with renewables accounting for 87% of new power generation investments.

This shift is reshaping the global energy landscape, with profound strategic and economic implications. It’s a far bigger story than most people realize.

I broke the screen on my #Google #Pixel7pro recently and decided to buy a #Pixel10ProXL. The #Pixel10 was delivered yesterday.

Today on the way home, hours before holding the 10, I wanted to take a photo on the 7. For the first time in THREE YEARS it focused in and out to find the focus. For three years, the camera on the 7 has relied on the utterly broken single-dot time-of-flight sensor instead of sharpness like everyone else. (Apple has decent multi-point. That also works)

#pixel

in reply to Richard "RichiH" Hartmann

The box the #Pixel10 was shipped in had a "welcome to team pixel" card in it. Upside down relative to all the print inside the shipping box, and bent in a corner

Then some creased packing paper, and the actual box just tossed in there rattling around loose

A huge and ugly sticker over the whole box with EU mandated information. They only had a year or two to prepare after all

And then the #Pixel10ProXL is in its box face down

A 1299€ device and the unpacking experience is sloppy and shit

in reply to Richard "RichiH" Hartmann

Do I need fancy unboxing? Very much not.

Yet I recognize if care was taken, or not.

@GrapheneOS keeps talking about an OEM hopefully working with them in a year or two. I hope we start seeing alternatives to Pixels.

I know a lot of you still think of the #Fediverse as just “Mastodon”.

But it’s far more than that. There’s an entire ecosystem of federated message boards that’s already proven popular: #Piefed, #NodeBB, #Lemmy, #Mbin, and #Discourse.

Even the classics like #Friendica and #Hubzilla have solid forum features baked in.

If you’re only here for the microblogging, you’re missing a key piece. Communities built around interests are something #Twitter never offered, and #Bluesky still doesn’t.

So if you’re looking to replace your #Facebook Groups, the Fediverse already has you covered.

in reply to Chris Trottier

Would my life be improved with any of what you are talking about? You're talking about forums, and the forums that I have been interested in the past have been ones that are often hard enough to even get people involved with them. Not that a "big" broad platform isn't of interest. I've tried to run such things.

Thanks for not asking for that answer.

in reply to Jigme Datse

@JigmeDatse I’m just speaking from experience. After starting several communities on Piefed, I’ve found it surprisingly easy to get people engaged.

Cross-posting there has actually led to more thoughtful comments—often from folks who share my exact interests.

That’s been my story. Yours may be different.

Today was my first time throwing porcelain clay.

WOW its like butter and was pretty fun.

Can't wait to bisque fire them, to see how they turn out. Planning on hand painting the glaze.

I want to use the unicode (partial) block symbols (strangeweb.page/@jochie/115118…) to draw graphs:

chars = [' ','▏','▎','▍','▌','▋','▊','▉','█']

The idea is that I can "scale” the horizontal bars (7/8, 6/8, 5/8, …) if/when at least one of the values gets a bit high, like this:

1️⃣ 0
2️⃣ 0
3️⃣ ▉▉▉▉▉▉▉▌ 12
4️⃣ ▉▉▉▉▉▉▉▉▏ 13
5️⃣ ▉▉ 3
6️⃣ 0

In my editor/client it’s fine, but some fonts show
U+258C “▌” as taller than the others, which is a bit annoying!

Any suggestions/alternatives?

in reply to Oblomov

@oblomov That screenshot that I think you're referring to is actually the Discord app in the Firefox browser.

Plot twist!

You were on to something. While writing my response I noticed that I had a bug in my code and was unintentionally using the "left 7/8 block” U+2589 where I thought I was using the full block.

Back to the drawing board (hah) for me, and more 🤦‍♂️ feelings with regards to fonts and unicode. 😁

Oblomov reshared this.

in reply to Jochie 👨🏻‍💻🏳️‍🌈

@oblomov And for completeness, the answer the other question. I _was_ using Monaco in my editor (Emacs) but for the partial blocks it was falling back to Andale-Mono.

Going back to the default which gets me Menlo for partial blocks and full block, and consistent heights.

Adding that to the long list of things to consider when picking my next (coding) font. 😅
