@pixelworship why did we let them get away with it, though?? The same people who told me NFTs will be the future are now super pandering me about AI and stuff.
@pixelworship Rich bros with tiny prnises desperately have to WIN at something anything. They're terrified the other techbro beats them at whatever the current game is. And rn it's the LL AI play. They're going bigger this time - they have governments suckered into enabling the scam. This one could do real damage.
a Spanish influencer posted something on twitter about this in 2021, saying "save the tweets making fun of my NFTs, we will laught at them in some time". And now we are trying to rescue those tweets just to make fun of him even harder.
I completely forgot about NFTs! Was there really no practical use for them? I remember listening to a podcast a few years ago where someone was touting their use for authenticating contracts or something? I don't really remember, but it sounded potentially useful in certain situations beyond the ones everyone joked about at the time. Was that really all just bunk, too?
Even if there are theoretical uses, they're not the uses driving the investment bubble so the bubble collapses. Investors bought NFTs cheaply and then hyped them in the hope of driving up the price, they never really cared about the tech itself or whether it had any long term future.
From an investor's point of view, blockchain/NFTs/metaverse/LLMs etc are really just innovations in pump and dump schemes, not innovations in useful technology. They're mainly ways of using complex tech to dazzle and extract money from gullible investors. When one tech collapses, pump another.

there's a huge difference methinks: GenAI does provide some useful service to people (e.g., helping with writing context-dependent letters or text for people who don't know how to speak admin-ese).
I think the ecological and ethical price we're paying for something that makes far too many mistakes is too high, but a lot of people see some real value to these tools, contrary to NFTs which were far more confidential in their use, due to their very narrow pragmatic usefulness.
