My understanding of (the current version of) FEP-044f is that you cannot make something quotable without issuing individual approval stamps upon request. ActivityPub development frameworks may make this easier in the future, but for the time being it's a hassle for bot developers.
I'm advocating for a simple and static way to declare quotability here: socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/… but it'll take platform implementer buy-in and, following that, at least one Mastodon version bump.

The flow is (1) you declare a canQuote policy, (2) accounts who fit that policy get their quote post buttons unlocked, (3) if one of them clicks it, your server gets a QuoteRequest from that actor, (4) you respond with a bespoke QuoteAuthorization, which you need to host indefinitely – its presence allows third parties to verify that that specific quote was permitted by you.
@liaizon The schema pretty much follows from the requirements that individual quotes must be authorized by the quoted account, and that the authorization be (a) verifiable, and (b) revocable. Can't really accomplish that without some sort of publicly accessible certification.
In fact I quite like the concept. My only criticism is that there should be a way for implementers willing to give up revocability to give a blanket permission to reduce the complexity.
Help me, Social-Wan, you’re my only hope! I am trying to extend my ActivityBot server to support quote posts. I am 90% of the way there - but stuck on making the quoted post visible to other servers. The bot’s statuses can be quoted on Mastodon.
Sadly no, not really. The only idea I had was that it looked like you were quoting posts by your bot that were created before or around the time you were changing the interaction policy, and servers might have cached the posts with the old policy (and because the posts don't have an "updated" timestamp, a refetch might not trigger a local update). But that doesn't explain why the quotes work on mastodon.social, so that line of investigation feels like a dead end. And I see nothing else. 🤔
According to recent change logs, the Mastodon team has been fixing a number of small bugs around quote posts. If the error is on Mastodon's end and not yours, that could mean your quotes work on nightly versions (like mastodon.social runs), but not stable releases.
I don't see anything promising in github.com/mastodon/mastodon/p… though. PR 36195 contains stuff that could be relevant, but going by timestamps that should have all made it into 4.4.5, which I run.

Your post was dismissive of academics and institutions in the noted countries. My link notes some quite relevant research being supported by China that isn't evidently of interest in America.
Unless current policies change, American institutions will be the target of ridicule before long as the exodus of scientists continues. We're not really in a position to deride others. Rather, we need to actively discourage xenophobia.

As a person in academia, I'm well aware of these dynamics. We live it every day.
There are also messy things about that story that make it less clean than the article suggests. A lot of people move because they're promised an empire. That's not a statement about systems but about people.
@mason Also, the statement about supported research is a misunderstanding of what research is being supported in the US. The claims here are not "researched" independently, they're mirroring the views of one disgruntled person. There's some truth to the complaint but also a lot of diversity of the AI work happening in the US. In particular, US ≠ Silicon Valley.
That was the most disappointing part of the article for me. I wanted them to focus on the ideas, and they gave equal or greater weight to the geopolitics.
I hadn't considered "personal empire building" as I read it, but now that you've offered up the idea, I can see that as a possibility.
Still, the core of the article spoke to me. I believe the current LLM fad is somewhat wrong-headed and that an approach perhaps more oriented towards artificial life is the way forward. I don't see people talking about that ever amidst the deluge of wild enthusiasm for the climate-killing hallucination engines. (I may be hinting at my biases there.)
I should spend time digging to see who else is approaching AI from different angles. I'd welcome pointers.
@mason Well, I think they're trying to solve different problems. And it's the usual short-term vs long-term gain. It is interesting that people like Rich Sutton ("bitter lesson") are not entirely bought into LLMs, some of which may be depth of insight, some of which may be slightly tribal (because it removes some room for RL).
I'm unfortunately not qualified to provide pointers, I just see a variety of things in, eg, the colloquia around me, including people openly questioning the status quo.
