LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (KCTV) - "In a Topeka courtroom Wednesday, September 24, CoreCivic, with the support of Washington D.C.’s Department of Justice went before a judge along with attorneys representing the City of Leavenworth.
"There, a judge scheduled a date for the two sides to meet again on #November25. In that hearing, CoreCivic will be allowed to present arguement that a Kansas court’s decision barring CoreCivic from housing #ICEDetainees should be overturned.
"The United States Department of Justice [#DOJ] filed a statement of interest on September 22 to address what it called 'an aggressive and unlawful effort' by the City of Leavenworth to interfere with federal immigration enforcement.
"The U.S. District Court was filed against the City of Leavenworth, Mayor #HollyPittman, Mayor Pro Tem #NancyBauder, and city commissioners Griff Martin, Jermaine Wilson, and Edd Hingula.
" 'The United States has a strong interest in countering state and local efforts to harass federal contractors, in the proper application of the Constitution and its Supremacy clause,' the DOJ said in its statement of interest, 'and in the foundational principles that protect the Federal Government from unconstitutional state and local interference.' "In March, the City of Leavenworth adopted a resolution preventing CoreCivic from using the former federal prison as an immigration detention center. It then filed a lawsuit asking a judge to block the private prison operator’s attempt to open the facility without its approval.
"The City opened its complaint with a testimonial describing the detention center as an 'absolute hell hole.' It stated that during CoreCivic’s 30 years of operation, there were 'multiple widely publicized scandals resulting from its gross mismanagement of the Facility,' which burdened the City in 'countless ways.' "

When I collect native plant seeds in my garden, I often get mezmerized by how neat the seeds look. Taking a moment to slow down and appreciate their aesthetics has been nice. I often think about seed adaptations when I'm world building for a story. How would plant seeds have evolved in my story's setting? What cool ways are they used? Stuff like that.

Ci sono azioni umanitarie ed azioni politiche.
Le azioni umanitarie, come la raccolta di denaro e di beni di prima necessità durante catastrofi e calamità di qualsiasi genere, sono utili ovviamente ma non hanno finalità politiche. Non generano cioè il cambiamento. Prendono atto di uno status quo, e cercano di metterci una pezza.
L'azione politica mira invece alla trasformazione dello status quo, attraverso la denuncia, il dibattito, l'intervento.
La questione palestinese non è una questione umanitaria ma politica. È divenuta umanitaria solo per il clamoroso fallimento della politica, che ha abdicato alla sua funzione primaria, quella che Platone identificava come il perseguimento della virtù, del bene comune.
La Global Sumud Flottilla ha un duplice scopo, e quello politico è preponderante rispetto a quello umanitario. Tutte le barche messe assieme non riuscirebbero a contenere abbastanza cibo neanche per un decimo dei palestinesi di Gaza. L'azione umanitaria è dunque simbolica.
Fare pressione sui governi è l'obiettivo primario. Mostrare fino a che punto possa spingersi la connivenza verso i crimini israeliani in Palestina. Mettere a nudo l'impotenza degli stati nel proteggere persino l'incolumità dei propri cittadini e renderlo paradigma di inadempienza, di inefficacia, di pavidità. Questo scopo politico è tanto più importante oggi, nel momento in cui Gaza rappresenta il centro del mondo e la visibilità della causa palestinese è ai massimi storici.
È proprio adesso che l'azione politica diventa necessaria.
E difatti, se un successo la Flottilla ha già ottenuto, indipendentemente dagli esiti finali della spedizione - che già conosciamo, ed incrociamo le dita affinché non si ripeta l'eccidio del 2010, quando un commando israeliano penetrò sulla barca degli attivisti turchi e ne giustiziò dieci, con colpi al petto da distanza ravvicinata - è eminentemente politico. Ha fatto convergere lo sguardo del mondo sul Mediterraneo orientale, anche quella parte di pianeta che era sinora rimasta silente di fronte al genocidio; ha contribuito ad allargare e globalizzare il discorso su Gaza, collegandolo alle gravi violazioni del diritto di cui tutti oggi sono spettatori impotenti; è fonte di grande imbarazzo e di grande preoccupazione per i governi occidentali e lo sarà ancora più mano a mano che le barche si avvicineranno alle coste di Gaza, entrando nell'occhio del ciclone - dei pirati internazionali, cioè .
Potrebbe anche finire qui. Per qualcuno effettivamente finisce qui, e ad essi va il mio personale ringraziamento per la partecipazione ad un'impresa che pochi avrebbero affrontato - tantomeno i cialtroni che dal divano di casa ridacchiano per cose troppo al di fuori della loro portata.
Agli altri, quelli che proseguono con grande coraggio verso le coste di una terra martoriata, attesi come pane dai prigionieri del più grande lager mai esistito nella storia, il mio augurio e la speranza che davvero possano "break the siege" e contribuire alla costruzione della gloriosa epica del popolo che non vuole morire.
Agli amici che, come me, ritengono che la Palestina sarà liberata solo dal sacrificio dei resistenti dico: la Flottilla, le manifestazioni, i novelli risvegliati, i Festival cinematografici, la grande solidarietà che si sprigiona da ogni angolo della terra, anche il più improbabile, aggiungono e non tolgono.
Non hanno la pretesa di liberare ma di accendere riflettori.
