I've sent a constructive email to a company explaining why their #synth GiveAway is problematic due it being Instagram exclusive.
How it 'forces' people to start or keep using a platform & company know for it's many problems. How it doesn't help them, but #Meta instead & goes against their values. Finally I suggested possible alternative options.
More people could politely & constructive explain the problems with #bigtech & suggest other solutions. Please speak up!

Safe and supportive online spaces provide an opportunity for people to talk about suicidal feelings openly and without stigma, and to get help and support. The right response, at the right time, can be lifesaving.Before You Act
Community administrators and moderators should exercise great caution before contacting police or emergency services in response to self-harm or suicidal content. Contacting law enforcement can result in serious unintended harm, particularly for users who are Black, Indigenous, disabled, LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent, or from other marginalised communities. In many cases, police involvement escalates risk rather than mitigates it. Always consider alternative support-based interventions whenever possible.Never attempt to collect, solicit, or pressure users to disclose identifying information such as their real name, address, phone number, or location for the purpose of alerting emergency services. This can create a significant breach of trust, escalate distress, and potentially violate platform rules or local laws. You should only work with information already available to you through the platform or past voluntary disclosures. Prioritise safeguarding the user’s privacy and autonomy while offering support and signposting to crisis services.
Best Practice Guides
The guide below sets out a recommended best-practice approach to responding to suicidal posts online. It is designed for community managers, moderators or individuals running or facilitating a community online for adults, and will help you provide a safe and supportive response to someone in crisis online.This document has been developed through consultation with leading experts in online communities, mental health and suicide, as well as community members with experience of seeking support for suicidal feelings online.

The "The Support for Suicidal Individuals on Social and Digital Media free toolkit" which follows it also strongly recommends calling the police on suicidal individuals.
These publications ignore the realities of policing in the modern age.
The Reddit guide is great for users, but should not be followed by staff for reasons aforementioned.

That first document is from the National Suicide Prevention Alliance - a UK health organisation (nspa.org.uk/)
The guidance is clear: "If someone doesn’t want to get help themselves, you may have to consider calling 999 for them. This is a serious decision, so make sure you think it through carefully." (it goes on to add more context and decision support)
The second document refers to local emergency services in cases of imminent danger only.

it absolutely should not be left to admins and moderators, but it does happen, and moderators have asked for expert guidance.
Of note, some countries have "duty to rescue" laws that require action at risk of penalty.
It's a complex problem for moderators worldwide.

This Ted talk by Scott Galloway is extremely powerful.
This man is providing a path to get people into the #fediverse.
I experienced some of this myself. My dad knew from the time I was a young person that he was going to inherit a significant sum of money. And he told me from a young age that he was going to spend every dollar he had before he died. At the same time, he said that I had to go out and "earn my way" like he did.
Now he's dead. He squandered 90% of what he got on early retirement and alcohol. Rather than investing in the future (kids), he indeed spent it on himself. He didn't EARN 90% of it.
I'm 55 and I am angry at my parents for what they did. And the sense of entitlement before they died was breathtaking. This is the attitude that Scott is talking about. And I have seen other people in my life who do not realize why we are suffering so much. The greed of the boomers has gutted the American dream.
I'm not saying that my dad shouldn't have spent some of the money on himself. But like his ancestors who owned a farm, he should have given some thought to the future.
And, by the way, I am turned out fine (although I would like to retire early). But unlike my dad, I worry about my kids future and what I can give them. Because they are going to need it.
And something I learned about my relationship with my father. There comes a time in life when I will need my kids more than they need me. My parents didn't plan for that day. And it was rough for them when it came.
I'm not going to make that mistake.
