“haunted tape” by Eight, 10/10/2021
you may want me dead
and sundered into pieces
smaller than grains of sand
but you’ll never tell
and I will never know
such is the punishment for twenty hours
of touch that is torture in hindsight
such is the punishment for
shattering a fragile peace
and believe me, if I could destroy
myself that utterly
don’t you think I would have
already?
surely you also know the hell I’ve
seen?
is it strange that I can still
see her face in nearly perfect detail
square jaw and blue hazel eyes
I rewind the tape again
and again –
how do you not get what you want
when it is offered freely
before you even ask?
before you even consider
what it is you want?
you only wanted security
and safety
and the comfort of routine
I wanted her
and I wanted you, too, once or twice –
now I hold in the pain you
wish you could see.
someday you might get your
wish. someday I might
be broken into
twenty six billion pieces
just like I did to my
dreams
like you did to my trust
and faith in a found home
and I will go my fate
head unbowed
still wondering if I
deserved it
but still I carry on
intact on the outside
I find my strength in
brokenness
do I leave a piece of me
in everything I leave behind?

Zoe Williams on the gaslighting of the voting public:
no, its not immigration that they/we are really concerned about, its the continuing cost-of-living crisis, its associated processes of enshitification of consumer goods & shrinkflation.
ReformUK may have managed to convince the political class that all we really care about is immigration (and the 'small boats'), but at home what most people are really worried about is rising prices & stagnant wages!

Scalzi Reviews Grokipedia
...by reading his own biography. Not surprisingly, it gets a lot of things wrong even when the correct information is available, and it puts a lot of emphasis on the decade-old Sad Puppies kerfuffle because apparently right-wingers are still obsessed with it or something. Some choice excerpts:
> fundamentally LLMs aren’t built for accuracy, they’re built for statistical probability, and these really are two separate things. > Having used Wikipedia for a while now, I feel reasonably sure that its biases are not “liberal,” they’re “pedantic,” > Which is to say, if you have to choose a “pedia” to trust, you might choose the one assembled by a bunch of pedantic nerds saying “well, ACTUALLY” to each other until the heat death of the universe, over the one assembled by an LLM controlled by a, insecure Nazi salute-throwing billionaire who sprints to reprogram that LLM every time it shares a fact that makes that billionaire angry or sad, or doesn’t fit into his Playskool Machiavellian ambitions and plans. In this particular case, a thousand pedantic nerds is much better than a single rich one.

New York declares state of emergency to help food banks in shutdown
New York’s governor, Kathy Hochul, has declared a state of emergency to raise $65m to help food banks as federal funding for the national food stamps program is set to expire on Saturday due to the government shutdown.
The move comes after Oregon and Virginia also declared emergencies to make funds available to cover the anticipated short fall in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Snap), which provides food aid to nearly 42 million people.
New York receives nearly $650m a month in federal funding for Snap benefits, according to Department of Agriculture figures.
Oregon governor Tina Kotek on Wednesday pledged $5m to food banks and declared a 60-day food security emergency. Virginia governor Glenn Youngkin has said the state will draw on surplus funds to pay for up to a month of Snap benefits.
The declarations come amid an ongoing standoff between the Trump administration and the Republicans, on one side, and the Democrats, over a federal government funding package. Neither Congress nor the White House has acted to fund November Snap benefits, which cost around $8bn a month.

1.) we need to make sure that the reverseproxies in our deployments do not cache
2.) a bug in starlette that can get the cache-validation confused if files change but their modified-timestamps stay the same.
